Chapter 599: Chapter 31: The Revealed Inside Agent
Iron Spear promised Red Beard that she would take down the man in the weird black suit.
But the guy hadn’t reappeared for two consecutive days thereafter.
Red Beard’s patience had almost worn out; he had been secretly observing these days, looking for a chance to break free.
However, the guards had clearly become more vigilant after entering the mountain. Not only were they watched during the day’s march, but their hands and feet were also bound before going to sleep at night.
The rope used was very sturdy. Red Beard had abraded a small notch all night long but couldn’t break free, and he ended up being beaten by a guard who found out.
This beating made Red Beard completely give up on escaping using his own strength. During an afternoon toilet break, he surreptitiously engraved a large snake with two wings on its back into the rock wall.
This was the Mist Snake Tribe’s totem, and it was also the agreed-upon sign for contact with the Dwarves.
Red Beard knew there was a mole among them, but who it was specifically, he was also unclear; he needed that person to find him first.
After making the marking, Red Beard pulled up his pants and casually returned to the group to have dinner.
As soon as he returned, Iron Spear approached him and asked, "How did it go, smoothly?"
Not wanting to appear incompetent in front of his sister, Red Beard posed confidently, "Of course," he paused and then added, "you should not stay so close to me, be careful not to arouse the guards’ suspicion."
"What’s there to be afraid of, they can’t understand what we are talking about anyway." The female warrior grumbled, but still moved a bit further away.
Red Beard appeared calm, but he had no real assurance in his heart, unsure if the mole would see the mark on the rock and whether he would actually come to find him after seeing it.
He silently finished the bread in his hands. It must be said, the food outside the mountains was definitely better than that inside; the Mist Snake Tribe would never give their captives bread.
Although the tribespeople practiced agriculture, their methods were primitive, and their crop yields were low, occasionally necessitating the clearing of new land.
Therefore, food was precious, and sometimes their raids and battles with the Dwarves were not entirely out of hatred, but because there were simply too many people in the tribe.
But survival resources were limited; they could only manage by reducing their numbers this way.
This was also why Old Wutu and Red Beard ultimately decided to cooperate with the Dwarves.
Sometimes Red Beard was quite envious of Iron Spear; this woman was simple-minded and robust, never worried about tomorrow, which is why she could say things like "the mountains are quite nice."
After dinner, the ten tribal captives were given a precious period of free time to stretch their limbs a bit, but this happiness was short-lived, as they were bound again as night fell.
Red Beard lay down to sleep on the spot, until in the middle of the night he sat up and gestured to the nearby guard that he needed to go "toilet" again.
The guard cursed a few words but ultimately untied the ropes on his hands and legs, and Red Beard got up and headed towards the place he had relieved himself before.
But he was stopped by the guard behind him, "Where do you think you’re going in the middle of the night? Just do it here."
Red Beard didn’t understand his words, but the guard’s whip made him understand.
After getting whipped, Red Beard didn’t dare move again; then he saw the guard point at the ground beneath his feet, then make a motion as if pulling down pants.
Is this not a resting place? Red Beard was confused.
"Anyway, you savages are all stinky, just urinate right here and get back to sleep," the guard said with a sneer.
Red Beard seemed to grasp the meaning of the guard and glared across at him, his mind racing as he desperately tried to think of another excuse to return to the place where he had left his mark.
Just then another voice spoke up, "Let him go. The smell here is too intense if he urinates, affecting everyone else. I’ll keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn’t escape."
The speaker was a guard from the Arias family, accompanied by three comrades who were responsible for patrolling this area at night.
Seeing them, the guard immediately switched to a more ingratiating expression, saying with a smile, "How could I trouble you when you already have such a hard time patrolling? I’ll go instead."
After saying this, he whipped Red Beard, urging him to walk faster and not dawdle.
Inwardly, Red Beard vowed that if he ever got out, he would find a way to kill this man.
Despite some struggle, he eventually got what he wanted and returned to where he had urinated that afternoon.
But now it was pitch black around him, and Red Beard couldn’t see if there had been any changes near the mark he left on the rock.
So he unzipped his pants, urinated, and then pretended to lose his footing, falling to the ground while quickly reaching under the rock, only to discover—
The mark from the afternoon was gone, or more accurately, it had been erased.
Red Beard had considered many possibilities beforehand, but he never imagined that the mark would be erased.
This meant that the guy was indeed nearby, silently observing every move he made, which was why he had noticed the mark so quickly.
But he didn’t want to interact with him at all, so he just erased it?
That meant the guy really didn’t care about the lives of these captives; he was only thinking about how to deal with these imperial people.
And this matched Red Beard’s impression of the Dwarves, which infuriated him greatly.
This collaboration had been lopsided from the start, with their tribes losing thousands of warriors right off the bat. Now he just wanted a little help from the insider in the team, but that guy clearly didn’t want anything to do with him.
For a brief moment, Red Beard was so angry he even thought about exposing the insider’s existence to get back at the bastard.
But then he remembered that he didn’t speak the Universal Language and couldn’t communicate with the imperial people. And after all the sacrifices, having barely made it this far, Red Beard had no choice but to suppress his anger and swallow this bitter loss.
Meanwhile, the Lady had already gone to sleep.
But for Li Yu, it was early morning at the start of his shift and he wasn’t sleepy. He was in another tent, listening to the people monitoring Red Beard’s movements report on the past two days’ findings.
"We’ve found the infiltrator," Tom said.
"Who?"
"The guy with the nickname ’Big Hand,’" Tom said. "I had someone tailing him and discovered that this savage, under the guise of urinating in the afternoon, made some sly moves, secretly leaving a mark on the rock wall."
While saying this, Tom couldn’t help but complain, "These savages are incredibly stupid. They behaved for two days, and I thought they were hiding some cunning plans, but that was all they had. Did he really think he could fool us like this?
"Big Hand must have realized that what the savage did would probably alert us, so he quickly went over and erased the mark."
