Chapter 389: Chapter 7 Medication is Just an Aid
Before seeking out Niu Xiangui, Li Yu also took some time to visit another person.
——Golden Eyes
It had been two months since Golden Eyes arrived at Green Field. During this period, he had been undergoing detoxification treatments, but recently, the frequency of his blood pressure and sleeping medication use had notably decreased.
According to Ruby, who had been taking care of him, Golden Eyes hadn’t used any medication for more than ten days now and his physical condition was quite stable; he had even resumed some physical exercises.
Li Yu also took this opportunity to pay him a visit.
Speaking of Golden Eyes, Li Yu held a complex impression of him; during their first meeting, Golden Eyes had ambushed him, following which Golden Eyes had stuffed him into a sack, intending to cart him away.
Soon after that incident, this fellow had sneaked back to Green Field and abducted the little maid.
Just because of these two incidents, Li Yu had enough reason to kill him, but later, during Clara’s rescue process, Golden Eyes had defected, indeed playing a significant role.
He had also proactively come to join the Double Rest Sect, which had some promotional effect, so Li Yu was too lazy to settle those old scores with him.
However, how to deal with Golden Eyes afterwards was something Li Yu was still contemplating.
Golden Eyes and Jude shared some similarities; both were not very sociable, showed disregard for others’ lives, and had their hands stained with plenty of blood.
But Jude killed mainly for himself, being an absolute egoist before his conversion to Saturday, only acting when threatened or when there was profit to be made.
Golden Eyes was different; he was a killing machine secretly cultivated by the Silver Moon Church and controlled with medications.
He didn’t kill out of personal preference. His actions were purely obedient, and he virtually had no emotional fluctuation when he made his move.
As Li Yu pondered, he had already arrived outside the courtyard where Golden Eyes was housed.
He knocked on the door, and a head quickly peeked out from inside.
"Prophet Merlin, you’ve come?" Ruby looked somewhat surprised upon seeing the person at the door.
"Yes, is it convenient for me to come in now?"
"Of course." Ruby spoke as she opened the gate.
Li Yu then stepped inside.
Since Golden Eyes’s condition had improved, he was no longer tied up in the courtyard but had been moved inside the house. However, he still wore shackles on his wrists and ankles to ensure he couldn’t escape.
Golden Eyes had already heard the noise and had climbed out of bed as Li Yu entered.
However, when Li Yu entered the room, he couldn’t see him.
The next moment, like a silent leopard, Golden Eyes stealthily approached Li Yu from behind and looped the iron chain around Li Yu’s neck.
Now, with just a slight effort, he could easily snap the neck of the man in black standing before him.
However, the latter seemed completely unaware of the threat of death, his heart rate and breathing frequency remaining unchanged, even maintaining the same posture as before.
"You are too careless, not bringing a single guard with you here," Golden Eyes whispered into Li Yu’s ear, his tone grim.
"The True God’s messenger cannot be killed."
"Hirodod also said something similar."
"He was merely bluffing, but I am serious," Li Yu said, "If you don’t believe me, you can try, but just so you know, my tolerance has its limits. Once I resurrect, I will have to settle for exploiting your minimal uses only."
"What are consider minimal uses?"
"That would be recycling your corpse for the use of Heroic Spirits after your death."
Golden Eyes snorted coldly, but ultimately, he removed the iron chain from Li Yu’s neck.
Just then, Ruby entered from outside and upon seeing the two standing so close, she glanced around and then said to Golden Eyes, "There’s no water in the tank; I’ll go fetch some."
"Don’t go!"
"It’s okay, I’m fine," Li Yu said as well.
Having said that, he found a chair and sat down, then he gestured to another empty chair in front of him.
Golden Eyes didn’t like the feeling of being completely controlled by the person opposite him, but he had no other choice. After a long silence, he reluctantly sat down.
"How are you doing now?" Li Yu straightened his wrinkled collar and asked.
"Much better than before, but I wake up easily when I sleep, sometimes my knee still hurts, and I also get inexplicably irritable," he replied.
"Mhm, these are all possible reactions after going off the substance," Li Yu said, "If you’re lucky, it might lessen or even disappear in a few months."
"And if I’m not?" Golden Eyes asked.
"It might accompany you for the rest of your life."
Upon hearing this, Golden Eyes fell back into silence.
"Try to think on the bright side—at least you made it through," Li Yu said. "I remember you saying that no one in the guard squad had ever successfully broken free from the control of the Silver Moon Church before."
"The Divine Medicine you gave me indeed worked," Golden Eyes acknowledged. "I relied on them to make it until now."
"The medicine is just a supplement, your perseverance till now is more due to your willpower and spiritual power."
"It was Mary."
"Hmm?"
"Mary helped me a lot. She would visit every few days and tell me stories about you and Saturdays. Despite thinking at some point that you were just a swindler planning to leave me to die here."
"But during my toughest times, it was that child who gave me the courage and hope to keep living."
Golden Eyes paused, "There’s something I’ve never told anyone before—I once had a daughter. If she had lived until now, she would be about Mary’s age."
"How did you lose her?"
"The plague. In order to treat her, I agreed to the terms of the Silver Moon Church and joined the guard squad, but she died later," Golden Eyes explained. "Then I couldn’t get rid of the curse placed on me."
"What about your wife?"
"Died in childbirth."
"So you have no other relatives now?"
"Correct," Golden Eyes said.
"What are your plans next?"
"Mary wants me to stay, but I’m worried you will use and control me, just like Hirodod... I’ve grown tired of being involved in religious conflicts; if you can guarantee that, I might stay and become a lumberjack or a farmer," Golden Eyes said.
"With your martial arts skills, it would be a shame to be a lumberjack or a farmer."
"I don’t mind, besides, your people cut off one of my thumbs, I’m not a top swordsman anymore."
"I can promise you that you won’t have to get involved in religious conflicts again," Li Yu said. "But I have a more suitable job for you."
"What job?"
"The Judgement Court, they are currently short-staffed and your record fits the job requirements perfectly. Don’t worry, you won’t need to face heathens; it is a new internal supervision agency I’ve established."
"Are you sure, with my personality, that I am suitable to work with others?"
"The Judgement Court doesn’t require you to have good relationships with others," Li Yu said. "In fact, I plan to assign all the anti-social people there. It doesn’t matter if you don’t see eye to eye with each other, as you will mostly be working independently going forward.
"Your job is to investigate those who are corrupt, who abuse their power, and who violate disciplines. Remember though, as you are supervising others, someone will also be supervising you."
