Chapter 339: Chapter 97: The Night Before Dawn
It turned out that Golden Eyes was somewhat useful. After all, he had once been under Hirodod, and he understood Hirodod’s habits of conduct better than most. With him by their side, he indeed played a role in filling the gaps.
However, when Tom suddenly asked if Golden Eyes could persuade the Church guard team to defect to the Double Rest Sect or, at the very least, bring his subordinates over, Golden Eyes just shook his head and refused.
He later explained, "The curse placed on us by the Silver Moon Church is very powerful. No one has been able to escape this curse for thousands of years, so it’s rare for warriors of the Church guard team to betray the Church, even if they are my men.
If it hadn’t been for our capture by you guys, I wouldn’t have chosen this path."
Tom felt it was fair to conclude, Golden Eyes was useful, but not by much.
But now wasn’t the time to settle old scores with this guy, rescuing Clara came first.
After setting the plan, everyone started checking their weapons and gear while conserving their energy, waiting for nightfall.
From Tom’s experience living in Duolin City these days, the city was usually bleak and deserted during the day, and even more so at night.
The new troops continued their rampant behavior in the city, and Hirodod did not stop them, causing the residents to panic. Ordinary people dared not step out, fearing they might be dragged away for trial as heathens.
But tonight was quieter than usual, even the usually active cloaked figures were fewer. Tom sensed an unusual odor in the air.
He wasn’t the only one who felt this way, Golden Eyes’s expression was also very stern.
"Matina’s army will arrive tomorrow. I guess many people won’t be able to sleep tonight."
"That’s none of our business," Tom said, "Let’s go rescue Mary first."
Golden Eyes nodded.
Time quickly approached midnight, and the group, armed with their gear, quietly left the brothel and headed towards the courtyard where the little maid was held.
They hadn’t encountered a single soul even after walking two streets away.
In the past, the city had some drunkards and wanderers, but now the former couldn’t find a place to drink, and the latter had probably joined the new troops.
Tom saw a few rats scurrying out from the shadows; one of them seemed to be carrying half an ear in its mouth, which looked to be human.
As they walked further, they finally heard the sound of horse hooves.
Tom wanted to hide, but it was too late. The nearest hiding place was ten steps away, and almost at the same time, the Rider on horseback had already seen them and shouted, "Who’s there? Halt, don’t move."
Hearing this, Tom stopped, already seeing that there were only four riders. He lowered his voice to the others behind him, "On my command, when they get close, we make our move and take them out immediately."
But as the four men approached, Tom caught a clearer view of the leading Rider’s face and was slightly taken aback.
The Rider was equally surprised, "It’s you guys. What are you doing out so late?!"
"Just taking a walk," Tom said, "And you, Sir Constantino?"
"I’m on patrol." Constantino glanced at the sword at Tom’s waist and the weapons in the hands of the others and sneered, "You’re all armed to the teeth just for a walk?"
"No choice, you know the situation in the city," Tom shrugged, "Whatever we do, we have to keep ourselves alive first. But about you, do you always patrol with so few people?"
Hearing Tom’s words, Constantino fell silent.
A moment later, he said, "The people in the city are generally not optimistic about the upcoming battle, and since Sir Ed has not appeared for a while, many guards are unwilling to come out on patrol, or simply find a place to hide and drink while they should be patrolling."
"Is that so? Then I advise you to do the same."
"How could that be possible? My father is the sheriff, and I cannot disgrace him," Constantino said proudly.
"If I were your father, I would rather see my son safe and sound."
"That is why we are nobles and you are a commoner. We regard honor as dear as life itself," Constantino said, hesitating for a moment before warning Tom.
"You’re lucky to have encountered me, but if you keep wandering around outside, your good luck will eventually run out. Head back soon."
After speaking, Constantino grabbed the horse’s reins, turned to the three guards behind him, and said, "We will continue moving forward, let’s check out the Hive! There are quite a few shops there; it might attract some attention."
Tom wanted to say more, but quickly the four riders disappeared from view.
Golden Eyes watched the direction in which Constantino was leaving and faintly said, "His courage is commendable, but he still shouldn’t go to the Hive, especially tonight."
"He is the son of the sheriff."
"Even the master of Duolin City is hiding in his castle," Golden Eyes said. "Every revelry has its price; that burlap clothing might work against the townspeople, but against the elite of the families from the West, it’s a dead end."
"Faced with strong enemies, they should calm down and prepare for the incoming battle," Golden Eyes continued.
"Or, they could choose to go wild one last time while they have the chance," the voice of Golden Eyes was void of warmth, "Do not overestimate the courage of those scums. I have dealt with plenty of such men before; they are hardly men at all."
This time, Tom was silent.
Although they had not interacted much, Tom had a fairly good impression of Constantino; the sheriff’s son might have had some youthful arrogance, but he was quite upright and held a moral standard rare among nobles.
Tom didn’t want anything bad to happen to him, which was why he had subtly advised him against patrolling around, but unfortunately, Constantino did not take his words to heart, and Tom now had more pressing matters to attend to.
In the end, he could only sigh and continued leading his group towards the courtyard where the little maid was being held.
They quickly reached the wall of the courtyard, where Tom left a person to operate the drone, watching as the three-eyed iron bird finally hovered above the courtyard.
Soon, the scene inside the courtyard was clearly visible.
Even though he had already seen a recording of it before, Golden Eyes could not help but express his genuine admiration; the Holy Artifact was incredibly powerful!
It was just like being able to see the opponent’s move ahead of time during a fight.
Knowing in advance where the next strike would come from and where it would land, how could you lose?
Tom and his people, according to the plan, smoothly infiltrated the yard after the patrol had left.
Then, through ambush, they easily eliminated the patrol team and made their way to the front of the small building.
The guards in front of the building saw Tom approaching and were about to call their mates, but the next moment, the little red dot on their foreheads violently burst open, penetrated by a Crossbow Arrow!
The two men didn’t have time to make a sound before their bodies softened and they fell down.
