Chapter 234: Chapter 82 Okay
"I can understand the pain of losing your father, Miss Ireya," David continued, "and considering your contributions to the West, I have decided not to pursue the offense you’ve committed against me and my family, as long as you promise that similar incidents will not happen in the future."
Everyone present did not expect the situation to develop to this point, with the future Lord of the Western Territories still willing to make sacrifices and concessions.
It only required a single promise from Ireya to put the matter to rest, without even demanding an apology, fully demonstrating his tolerance and mercy.
In contrast, the other party seemed somewhat unreasonable and troublesome.
Especially since the girl was a vassal of the Figrola family, on the Bratis Continent, loyalty is always the noble’s foremost quality, and such defiance usually doesn’t end well.
However, faced with the olive branch David proactively extended, the Lady did not respond at all.
She just stood there, maintaining her silence.
And silence itself was a statement.
Discontent among the crowd grew louder; the nobles were somewhat restrained, still concerned with a minimum of decorum, while some commoners had already started cursing aloud.
David did not urge her, simply sitting quietly in his chair. He could see the unwillingness in the young girl’s heart and believed she had no choice but to yield.
But then another voice reached his ears.
"Excuse me, may I ask you a few more questions?"
David turned his head and saw Li Yu, dressed in black, walking towards him, followed by a young apprentice from a drama troupe, carrying a square black box that seemed to be quite heavy.
"What is this?" David asked.
"Oh, this is a Holy Artifact of the Double Rest Sect which can amplify sound," Li Yu did not hide the fact.
The young apprentice was holding a colorful outdoor speaker from Eco-friendly Frog, which had been picked up a month ago; Li Yu had the warriors of the Arias family retrieve it from Green Field when they went back for equipment.
A look of realization crossed David’s face, "The sounds that appeared in the play just now were all emitted from this thing... truly a miraculous method."
The acting steward of the Figrola family praised sincerely, pausing before adding, "Prophet Merlin, you are also helping Miss Ireya find the mastermind behind her father’s murder, right? Ask any questions you have, and I will surely answer them all."
"Actually, I want to ask about something else. Miss Ireya, after defeating the Black Dragon, also caught the person who was manipulating it from behind."
"The guy with wings on his back, Gabriel." David nodded, "I’ve seen him."
"Yes, and then he died," Li Yu said.
"Gabriel intended to assassinate me but he failed. He was beheaded by the guards rushing to the scene when they heard the alert, and there were quite a few people present who can attest to this," David said, unflinchingly.
The sheriff then interjected, "The criminal was armed with a weapon and extremely dangerous; the guards did nothing wrong in their actions."
"But where did the weapon come from?"
"It was a Skinning Knife, originally hanging on the wall of the interrogation room, and it was sneakily given to Gabriel by a dungeon guard named Pride," Iron Face said, his expression not looking very pleased at the recollection.
Because ultimately, the responsibility for this matter would still fall upon his shoulders. It was his failure to properly govern his subordinates that had almost led to the future Lord of the Western Territory being injured.
"What about Pride?" Li Yu continued to ask.
"Dead," Brian replied, "Right after the incident occurred, I led my men to his residence immediately, but nobody was there. Pride, along with his wife and daughter, were all missing. About five days later, we found the bodies of all three in an abandoned well."
"So like Sir Caroman, he will never be able to reveal who instructed them to carry out such deeds?"
The sheriff, not as rough and impulsive as he appeared, did not fall into the verbal trap set by Li Yu. He cautiously said,
"Sir Caroman had just died; I haven’t investigated his case, so I cannot be certain why he committed suicide. As for Pride’s family, they were most likely silenced."
"Who do you think the murderer could be?"
"I don’t know; I’m still searching for that guy’s whereabouts. Rest assured, I definitely won’t let him get away," Brian snorted as he spoke.
"And you, Lord David? Who do you think would want to assassinate you?"
"Initially, I suspected my brother, but now it seems someone else is after my life," David said lightly. "Although the Figrola family has a dominant presence in the Western Territory, we do have enemies, especially since some of my ancestors had rather heavy-handed ways of doing things.
"For instance, during the conquest of this city, they killed quite a number of people. If these people have descendants who are still alive, they might very well come back seeking revenge against me.
"Speaking of which, Miss Irelia once told me that you, Prophet Merlin, can find people through divine prophecy. Sir Caroman was found by you, so I wonder, could you also help me find that assassin?"
David said leisurely, with a flicker of barely noticeable ridicule in his gaze towards Li Yu.
However, what he didn’t expect was to hear Li Yu promptly reply, "Yes."
"You can really do it?" David furrowed his brows.
"Of course, but not through a prophecy. Before coming to Rock Snow City, I had a private... exchange with Gabriel."
"Really? Did he tell you why he wanted to assassinate me?"
"No, our conversation mainly revolved around whether he would be silenced. Gabriel was very confident in his high-ranking ally, firmly believing that the other party could save him. But in the end, I convinced him to take an additional precaution.
"I hid something small on one of his wings, this thing," Li Yu said, while fishing out a tiny circuit board from his pocket. It was disassembled from a mini voice recorder, still bearing traces of dried blood.
"Fortunately, the wing that was chopped off was the other one. The principle behind it might be a bit complicated to explain, so I’ll keep it short. I gave Gabriel the temporary ability to record sound, so on the night he was killed, he also recorded all the sounds at the scene."
Li Yu said, "Now, let’s all listen together to what happened that night. I believe that after hearing this recording, everything will become crystal clear."
After finishing his words, he looked meaningfully at David, who finally lost the calm and composure he had before.
His eyes were filled with panic and disbelief, his distress clearly discernible to everyone around. It was the first time the others had seen the future Lord of the Western Territory so utterly disarrayed. The veins on his forehead stood out as he rose from his chair and shouted at Li Yu, "No, this isn’t possible!"
