Chapter 208: Chapter 56: Love and Honey Wine
Miss Irelia had been playing with her electronic pet egg for most of the night, finally feeling a bit sleepy, but no sooner had she closed her eyes than she was awoken by a noise from outside the door.
Miss Rabbit turned over, initially planning to continue sleeping, but after lying there for a while, she changed her mind, got up from the bed, threw on some clothes, and opened the door.
"What’s happened?" the young girl asked the passing guards outside.
The leader stopped, "I apologize, Miss Irelia, there was a bit of trouble at the dungeon. Gabriel attempted to assassinate Lord David, but was decapitated by the guards who arrived in response."
"Gabriel is dead?" the girl was taken aback, but not surprised by the outcome, given the crimes Gabriel had committed, it was impossible for him to have any way out.
However, the Lady had not expected Gabriel to die so soon.
She had just brought him to Rock Snow City, and in less than a day, Gabriel had already breathed his last.
The young girl needed some time to digest the news, and after a moment, she continued, "And Lord David, he..."
"Lord David saw through the adversary’s tricks, and was largely unharmed, only sustaining a minor wound on his arm where the skin was cut by a small knife wielded by the prisoner."
"I don’t quite understand, where did Gabriel get that small knife?" asked Irelia, frowning.
"That’s what we’d like to find out," the leader replied, "Lord David has already ordered an investigation into the matter. If there’s nothing else, Miss Irelia, please stay in your room as much as possible and avoid wandering around. Guard Captain Levin is worried there might be other assassins, although security at the Marquis Mansion is already being heightened."
"Alright," Irelia nodded, watching the guards walk away. She was about to return to her room when she accidentally caught sight of Sheriff Brian.
The latter was hurrying past downstairs, his brows furrowed, heading toward the council hall.
The girl hesitated for a moment, but eventually, her curiosity got the better of her, and she quietly followed him.
There were guards outside the council hall, but Irelia did not need to get too close to hear the voices coming from inside.
"I’ve already done a preliminary check. A dungeon guard named Pride is missing. He was one of the six who escorted that winged bastard back to the dungeon during the day. He should have been in the dungeon tonight, but he left early evening under some pretext," it was said inside.
Then came David’s voice, "Do you think he secretly gave the knife to Gabriel?"
"Although I still don’t want to believe that Pride would dare betray me, this seems to be the only explanation," Iron Face said.
"I’ve sent people to his place, but it was empty, Pride and his wife and daughter are also gone, and some easily portable valuables have been taken with them."
"The city gates had already been closed when Pride left, hadn’t they?"
"Yes, he can’t escape. Once I find him, I’m going to shove a flowering pear up his ass!" the sheriff roared.
Even from several steps away, the girl’s ears were slightly pained by Brian’s shout.
However, the sheriff’s voice soon lowered again, "This lapse in discipline is my fault. My men were bribed, and I was none the wiser, even leading to your assassination attempt. If that man had succeeded, I would be inexcusably culpable."
"It’s not your fault, it’s not directed at you. My brother is very good at that kind of mind-tricking stuff, plus he’s a member of the Figrola family, so it’s normal for your men to do things for him," David said.
"Still, a mistake has been made, and a price must be paid," Iron Face said, "I will resign from my position as sheriff once Pride is found."
"No!" David rejected the notion without hesitation, "Your achievements over the years are clear to everyone. We cannot afford to lose such an excellent sheriff in Rock Snow City over such a trivial matter."
"But you..."
"As I said, my hand is not seriously harmed, and actually, now is when I and the Figrola family need you most. Sir Brian, are you planning to abandon me at this critical moment?"
"Of course not."
"Good," David’s voice eased a bit, "then hurry up and find Pride and my brother."
"I won’t let you down."
Miss Rabbit then heard footsteps coming from the council hall, but it was too late for her to retreat upstairs. It would be too awkward to be caught now, so she quickly hid behind a suit of armor.
Fortunately, the sheriff was preoccupied at that moment and left the Marquis Mansion without looking around, walking straight past the Lady, not giving her a second glance.
The girl had hardly had a chance to breathe a sigh of relief when she heard David’s voice from the conference hall, "Is that Miss Irelia outside?"
A chill ran down the Lady’s spine, but there was no point in hiding anymore.
All she could do was stand up from behind the armor, straighten her cloak, and walk toward the conference hall.
"I didn’t mean to eavesdrop on your conversation."
"I know, you just couldn’t sleep in the middle of the night and happened to walk over here," David said.
"Um... how did you notice me?"
"Armor."
"What?"
"Those armors, your shadow was reflected on them," David explained.
"Oh, I didn’t notice," Miss Rabbit admitted, feeling increasingly embarrassed. She forced a change of subject, pointing at David’s arm, "How is your hand?"
"I can still wield a sword, so it’s nothing serious."
"I’m sorry," the girl muttered softly.
"Why the sudden apology, Miss Irelia? This incident has nothing to do with you."
"If I hadn’t rushed you, you probably wouldn’t have gone to interrogate Gabriel so late at night. Maybe by tomorrow, the dungeon guard would have discovered his hidden knife," she said.
"Maybe, but my brother would definitely have thought of other ways to deal with me," David said. "Speaking of which, I should be thanking you, for catching Gabriel and revealing his dealings with my brother and informing me that Hels wasn’t dead. It made me more vigilant, and otherwise, it might have been more than just my hand that got hurt tonight."
"Ha, it’s what I should do. Compared to a cunning and deceitful man like Hels, someone benevolent and just like you is better suited to be the next ruler of the West. That’s honestly how I feel."
"If that day really comes, I hope you and your Arias family will continue to serve me, Miss Irelia. Your support is crucial to me."
"I will," the girl replied without hesitation. After she spoke, she noticed David was still staring intensely at her.
Miss Rabbit’s face flushed as she prompted, "Lord David... "
"Oh, I was just lost in thought. Rock Snow City is some distance from Acorn Castle, and Sir Caroman probably won’t arrive so soon. So, I was wondering... Miss Irelia, do you have any plans for tomorrow? A theater troupe from the Royal Capital plans to perform in the city."
"A theater troupe, from the Royal Capital?" the girl exclaimed, her eyes widening.
"Yes, the troupe’s manager happens to know me too. He’s very interested in your Dragon Slayer tale. After all, dragons haven’t been seen on the Bratis Continent for over three thousand years, so he asked if he could talk to you about adapting your experience into a play or something."
"What, a story with me as the main character?!"
"Don’t worry, he’ll pay," David reassured her.
"You just mentioned they’re from the Royal Capital, meaning they’ll go back there and perform my story in the Royal Capital?" Miss Rabbit gasped.
"To be precise, ’Love and Honey Wine’ will not only be performed in the Royal Capital but will also tour the Continent from time to time, so..."
"So even Elves and Dwarfs will know my name?! My goodness... I’m not dreaming, am I?"
"No, you are a hero, and your exploits deserve to be celebrated," David affirmed.
"Wow, I don’t want to lose my composure, but this is just too... I can’t find the words to describe how I feel right now," the girl admitted, having to take deep breaths to slightly slow her heart rate.
David smiled, "You’ll get used to all this. I’ll take that as a yes, and we’ll head out after lunch tomorrow."
