Chapter 207: Chapter 55 Companions
When Ireya returned to her living quarters, the words David had said before he left were still echoing in her ears.
Especially the phrase "There is no such thing as eternal relationships in this world," which made the young woman’s heart somewhat restless.
She had certainly heard about the Double Rest Sect’s plans to form their own military force. Li Yu had not kept it a secret from her, and strictly speaking, the Double Rest Sect had always had armed forces, since those lizard people used to be bandits before they started farming.
But after being subdued by Li Yu, they had turned over a new leaf and played an extremely important role in the battle against the Dragon.
Ireya had no doubts about Li Yu’s purpose in creating an army, the battle might have ended, but there loomed the crisis brought by the Birdmen.
Objectively, the Arias family did indeed need military assistance from the Double Rest Sect.
The young woman didn’t fundamentally agree with David’s statement at heart.
Although rare, there were eternal relationships in this world.
If Miss Rabbit were to pick the person least likely to betray her in this world, it would be Alfred or Li Yu besides herself.
But whether it was Li Yu or herself, one day they would grow old.
However, if nothing unexpected occurred, the Arias family and the Double Rest Sect would continue on, but would her successor coexist peacefully with the Double Rest Sect as she had?
What if Li Yu’s successor turned out to be bad, and what happened to the Emperor occurred to one of her descendants?
Ireya was somewhat worried, but she also felt she might be thinking too far ahead.
So the young woman tossed and turned in bed, even taking down the "old ancestor" necklace she wore and played a few little games, but still felt no drowsiness.
And tonight, she was not the only one who could not sleep.
After writing a letter to Caroman, David had his trusted aide deliver it to Acorn Castle and then proceeded to the dungeon, intending to interrogate Gabriel through the night.
The self-proclaimed Winged Man now looked very haggard.
Not only had he recently suffered severe injuries, but he had also lost his ability to fly forever, which in the Winged Man society meant he had been forever abandoned by the sky and had fallen to the status of a lowly land-dwelling race.
When David saw him again, he appeared utterly dispirited.
The next-in-line successor of the Figrola family signaled the four guards who had brought Gabriel to leave the interrogation room, then had his two trusted aides guard the door to ensure no one would enter midway. After that, he spoke.
"You look rather disheveled," he said.
"You just stood there, watching your sheriff lay hands on me," Gabriel opened his bloodshot eyes, looking at David, and said deliberately.
The latter scoffed lightly, "Don’t act like a resentful woman, blaming everyone else. Iron Face is not my sheriff. In the whole western region, he is loyal to only one person, my father. Besides, he acted so swiftly that even if I wanted to stop him, I wouldn’t have had the time."
"I want you to help me kill that bastard!" Gabriel screamed.
"Keep it down. If you keep yelling like this, I can only leave you here to die. Also, to answer your question, that’s impossible. Brian is not a small fry; a significant figure dying under mysterious circumstances would cause an uproar, especially at such a sensitive time," David replied.
David surveyed the interrogation room as he spoke, his gaze drifting across the various torture instruments hanging on the wall and the puddles of blood that had dried and turned black.
Each puddle represented a lost soul.
"I don’t care, he took my wings, and I will take his life and the lives of all he holds dear," Gabriel gritted his teeth, "And that Lady, what’s her name, Ireya, she not only killed my dragon but also roasted it!"
"Oh, my apologies for her actions—that was indeed a bit savage. The Arias family has been poor for too long, their actions can be... frugal."
"Kill them all."
"I would love to, in our original plan they were all supposed to die. But guess why they are still alive and well. Oh, it’s because your dragon couldn’t kill them."
David picked up a long saw that could bisect a prisoner’s body, examined it, then replaced it on the wall, "I must say I am somewhat disappointed in you, your dragon is not as formidable as you boasted."
"The Black Grim Reaper is strong, that Lady called Ireya and her warriors stand no chance against it!"
"Is that so? Then why was your dragon killed by her, and even roasted and eaten by her?"
David then picked up an "opening pear," a small device resembling a pear but made of iron. The dungeon guards would usually insert this device into any part of a prisoner’s body that could accommodate it.
Then, by turning a small handle at the top, the spiked bottom would open up, causing the corresponding part of the victim’s body to split as well.
David tried turning it a couple of times, found it unsatisfactory, and tossed it aside.
"The Black Grim Reaper did not lose to them, but to that so-called Prophet Merlin and the God he serves. I still do not know how they killed my Black Grim Reaper; their weapon is very special."
"I warned you to be careful of that Merlin. Months ago, he helped Ireya seize control from the Family Head of the Arias family. My father holds him in high regard, and even considered recruiting him at one point."
"I was fooled. I didn’t expect them to be in Green Field that night; I always thought he and that Lady were still outside Rock Snow City. And this information was provided by you," Gabriel said, panting.
"I am truly sorry, really, it looks like we were both deceived." This time, David picked up a joint dislocator, but quickly shook his head again.
"I made a mistake, and as a price, I lost the Black Grim Reaper and my wings, but rest assured, I haven’t betrayed you. Instead, I’ve redirected their suspicions to your brother and the head of the Second Son Alliance."
"Hmm, I must admit that was quite a clever move. I should thank you. But it’s also clear to you that I am the only one who can possibly save you in the western territories now. Betraying me would have brought you no benefit."
Finally, David selected a small knife for cutting flesh, weighing it in his hand, satisfied with its balance and size.
At that moment, Gabriel also realized something was amiss, staring at David, "We’re allies, aren’t we?"
The future heir of the Figrola family chuckled lightly, "For people like us, there is no such thing as allies. I collaborated with you only to use you, just as you collaborated with me only to use me. Do you really think I don’t know about your little schemes behind my back?
"This is the west, my territory."
"My people will soon come to Bratis to conquer this land, and they will not let you go if you kill me," Gabriel threatened.
"That’s a matter for the future, and besides, who knows I killed you?" David said, cutting through the ropes on Gabriel’s hands and thrusting the knife into the bewildered Winged Man’s hand.
Stepping back half a step to admire his handiwork, he then yelled at the top of his lungs, "Guards, the prisoner is attempting to kill me!"
