Chapter 204: Chapter 52 Welcome to Rock Snow City
"Huh? What the heck?" Miss Rabbit was stunned upon hearing this.
After a moment, she tentatively said, "Is that Birdman saying his people will come to the Bratis Continent like him, and even conquer and enslave us natives?"
"It sounds like it."
"Is he trying to scare us?"
"Doesn’t seem so; he didn’t know I could understand his language," Li Yu said. "You roasted his dragon, and he was clearly furious at the time. That statement must have been blurted out in anger."
The girl couldn’t help but shiver.
It didn’t seem like they had exerted much effort in downing Gabriel before, but that was because many people had joined hands, and they also had the Holy Artifact provided by Li Yu that assisted in aiming with a red dot.
But the main reason was that Gabriel wanted to help the Black Dragon escape its predicament at that time, so he took the risk of lowering his altitude to attack the Lizardman Warrior who was electrocuting the dragon with high voltage.
Otherwise, if he flew high enough, the Lady on the ground would have no way to deal with him, and even spotting him would be difficult.
In contrast, he could launch attacks on the people below by throwing or shooting arrows. Precision might be lacking, but once the numbers increased, that would no longer be a problem.
The nobles on the Bratis Continent commonly used castles for defense, but if their enemies could fly, those sturdy, tall walls would become pointless. After all, the ability to fly is just too overpowering.
Moreover, Gabriel had also mentioned that dragons still existed in his homeland, and they seemed to be able to tame giant dragons. If they brought over a few dragons...
The more Miss Rabbit thought about it, the more terrified she became. "No, we must hurry and inform Marquis Kuren and His Majesty the Emperor. This is no longer just a matter for the Western Territory but also concerns the safety of the entire Empire. If those who claim to be from the Winged Tribe really come in numbers like fifty thousand, no, even just ten thousand, it would be an absolute disaster for all the races living on the Continent."
The girl now regretted asking Li Yu for details.
Sometimes knowing too much isn’t a good thing. She had just settled the threat of the Black Dragon and hadn’t enjoyed a few good days when suddenly she was enveloped by an even more terrifying crisis.
Although she was just a minor borderland Lady, why was she repeatedly swept into the conspiracies of those so-called big shots?
Couldn’t she, too, live the life of a normal noble like other Lords? Hosting banquets, collecting taxes, occasionally indulging, buying herself a few beautiful dresses... How hard was that?
Wasn’t everyone living like that before? Why did the good days come to an end with her?
Of course, Miss Rabbit was just complaining in her heart; there was still work to be done.
She led an army of a hundred soldiers and personally escorted Gabriel, who was trussed up, to Rock Snow City. And even before she entered the city, she received a warm welcome.
It was unclear who had spread the news.
Early in the morning, the city gates were already crowded with people, all shoulder to shoulder, and right at the front of the crowd was none other than David, the current acting head of the Figrola family, along with a host of officials and nobles from Rock Snow City.
Ireya had never seen such a spectacle. She pulled down the carriage window to look out and saw a sea of people that burst into cheers upon seeing her carriage, and some were even shouting her name.
Although the young lady kept telling herself to stay calm, that these were all just empty titles, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of elation rise within her, surrounded by so many people.
Especially when she thought that none of the previous Family Heads of the Arias family had likely ever enjoyed such treatment, the pair of long ears on her head couldn’t help but start trembling again.
It was as if they had just been fitted with tiny electric motors.
So much so that when Miss Rabbit alighted from the carriage to meet Lord David and the other nobles, she had to reach up with one hand to press down her somewhat excessively proud ears.
"Miss Arias, welcome to Rock Snow City."
The Family Head of the Campos family and Rock Snow City’s Finance Officer, Golden Finger Romero, was the first to speak.
"Ah, Sir Romero, Lord David, you are really too kind," the young lady said. "It would have been enough to wait for me at the Marquis Mansion. Why did you even come out to the city’s outskirts, and did you also arrange for these people?"
The girl asked with curiosity, pointing at the crowd behind them.
"No, my father once advised me that the daily activities of nobles should minimize the impact on ordinary people, so these folks have all come to welcome you of their own accord, Miss Ireya," David said.
"To welcome me, so many people?" Miss Rabbit was surprised.
"Yes, you and your family killed that evil Black Dragon, saving the West. You are now the hero of the West," said Iron Face Brian, the sheriff of Rock Snow City. "It is only natural for a hero to be adored."
"All of us owe you a favor," Romero said with a smile.
"I heard that you personally took part in the battle and even led the final charge, charging ahead of your soldiers," another noble chimed in. "I must say, you are far braver than you appear to be. This is probably a case of like father, like daughter."
The Lady’s cheeks flushed with a hint of embarrassment from the praise.
She did charge indeed, but she fell after running only a few steps and spent most of the time in the bushes searching for her dagger in the dark, barely participating in the battle at all. Somehow, the story had been embellished to the point where she was portrayed as a leading warrior.
"Alright, let’s enter the city," David interrupted the pleasantries. "I’ve already organized a luncheon, just waiting for Miss Ireya and the warriors of the Arias family. If you have anything else to say to our female hero, you can save it for mealtime."
No one disagreed, and soon they were all escorting the young lady towards the center of the city.
Although Miss Rabbit was dizzy with all the exaggerated compliments, she hadn’t forgotten Gabriel, whom she had escorted here.
The sheriff thumped his chest and assured her, "Rest assured, Rock Snow City’s dungeon is the safest place in the city. Since I took over, no prisoner has escaped, and I will assign extra guards to ensure this scoundrel stays put."
"Be careful, he has wings and can fly," the girl reminded them, signaling the guards to bring Gabriel down from the prison carriage and hand him over to the dungeon’s guards.
As the guards escorted Gabriel towards the dungeon, the winged man looked up and deeply gazed at the Lady as if to imprint her face in his memory.
Just as he averted his gaze, the sheriff standing beside Ireya suddenly drew his sword and struck Gabriel’s wing with it!
His slash was quick and fierce, taking everyone by surprise. By the time the onlookers reacted, Gabriel’s wing had been chopped off.
The man who called himself Birdman let out a Screamer, fainting from the pain right there and then.
