Chapter 113: Chapter 29 Vigilance
"But those lizard people have already come out from the swamp, and you have even granted them a piece of land for them to thrive on," Priest Tessa said gravely.
"Indeed, before that they had defeated my guards, massacred my subjects all the way to the front of Teacup Castle, and those who died at their hands were all followers of Pisya. If I didn’t find a place for them to settle, even more devotees of the goddess would suffer," Miss Rabbit defended.
"In fact, before this, I had sought aid from the Church and the other nobles of the West, but there were very few willing to extend a hand. I did this out of necessity."
The old priest shook his head, "I don’t understand much about politics, but I can understand your difficulties... However, if I remember correctly, those lizard people originally worshipped an Evil God named Sosokus, but now they worship a Foreign God known as Saturday."
"Hmm, not exactly... Sosokus was just one incarnation of Saturday."
Upon hearing these words, Priest Tessa’s wrinkled face showed a hint of displeasure.
"Such lies might deceive those barbaric and ignorant lizard people who have lived their whole lives in the swamp, but since you are the Family Head of the Arias family, the lord of this territory, you surely are not a fool. Why then do you use such words to fob me off, or do you think I am as foolish as those lizard people?"
The young girl felt embarrassed and before she could speak, the old priest continued, "Furthermore, I hear you have given that Foreigner named Merlin the right to establish a religious group in Green Field."
"Not Green Field, to be precise, just a small part of the western side of Green Field. Besides, the lizard people’s adoption of Saturday as their faith is already a fait accompli. I gave Merlin the right to establish a religious group so that he could better restrain those lizard people," Miss Rabbit patiently explained.
However, with a single sentence, the old priest left her speechless, "But you are still a follower of the goddess, aren’t you?"
"Since you are a follower of the goddess, how can you allow other heathens to establish their religious groups on your territory, to worship and venerate their gods?"
Miss Rabbit scratched her head; she wasn’t afraid of Priest Tessa.
Although the latter, having saved lives and helped the injured for many years, had a very high reputation in the West, especially around the Black Stone City area.
But just as the old priest herself had said, she didn’t care much for politics. Her coming to question and accuse today was likely not at the behest of the Silver Moon Church, but purely because she could not bear to see someone’s recent wrongdoings.
Feeling that the new lord of Green Field was likely on the wrong path, someone needed to step forth and critically correct her in time.
Ireya felt guilty because she had been hit squarely by Priest Tessa’s words.
The young girl also realized that she had become increasingly less devout lately, not just allowing Li Yu to establish a religious group, or even tacitly allowing Li Yu to carry out missionary work within a limited scope.
The key was that she had complained about the goddess more often than before, and sometimes even harbored distrust towards the goddess, feeling the goddess was of no use.
This had never happened before she met Li Yu. She had been full of reverence and unconditional love for the goddess during her time studying at the Temple.
It hadn’t been that long, and she had already decayed to such a degree that she had even been seriously considering the pros and cons of switching allegiance to Saturday a while ago.
If left unchecked, it wouldn’t be long before she completely lost the favor of the goddess.
Priest Tessa’s admonishment was like a bucket of ice water, jolting Miss Rabbit into a state of alertness.
The young lady expressed her gratitude, "I understand now, you’re right. I indeed haven’t been doing well recently, no wonder there have been various disasters on my land. This must also be a warning from the goddess. I will go and recopy and recite the Holy Poems a few more times."
The old priest was very satisfied with the young lady’s attitude, and his tone and demeanor became much gentler, "It’s never too late to mend. It’s not easy for you to realize your mistakes so quickly.
"Especially for young people your age, self-reflection is an excellent and rare quality. Ireya, as long as you can maintain your devotion to the goddess, restrain your desires, empathize with your subjects, and show kindness and tolerance, your future will surely be that of an outstanding lord."
"Thank you for your teachings," Miss Rabbit, immensely flattered, saw her ears twitch with delight.
After seeing off Priest Tessa, Ireya did as she promised, heading to the Weiting Family’s book storage room. She pulled out the Holy Poems which she hadn’t even opened once since her return to Green Field.
She dusted off its cover.
Then, with paper and pen in hand, she began to earnestly transcribe the hymns.
All afternoon, until sunset, the young girl was bent over the desk, transcribing until her wrist hurt, but her face was radiant.
She felt that the previous restlessness and anxiety had vanished, and her soul seemed to have settled once more.
Taking a brief sigh of relief and massaging her wrist, Ireya took the opportunity to eat the dinner brought in by the maid.
At her request, tonight’s dinner was kept simple: white bread with a piece of pickled meat, stewed together with freshly harvested carrots.
Miss Rabbit decided to lead by example, advocating frugality throughout her territory. This way, in years of disaster, there would be more reserves to assist the poor who couldn’t get enough to eat.
She also planned to write another letter to the Silver Moon Church, asking them to send more help to spread the goddess’s glory in her land, to alleviate the distress and panic inflicted upon the ordinary people by the lizard people’s previous plundering.
And then there were those remnants of the Weiting Family, not just the simple issue, Ireya noticed that many people’s health seemed to be poor, although not yet life-threatening, but they couldn’t be neglected either.
No matter what, from now on they were all subjects of Green Field, and Miss Rabbit also planned to have the territory’s herbalist check on them and provide treatments....
Ireya spent a fulfilling and busy day this way.
When it was midnight, Li Yu, as usual, arrived on time, suddenly appearing out of nowhere in front of her, and the young girl, no longer surprised by this, even took the initiative to nod at Li Yu and greeted him.
Li Yu, carrying a bag of steel tape measures, a spirit level, and a stainless steel trowel, asked Ireya, "Do you need any help around here?"
Miss Rabbit put down the Holy Poems she was holding and shook her head gently, "No, there haven’t been any problems recently. Besides, I’m not a child anymore. I can’t always ask for your help when something comes up. I have to learn to face difficulties on my own."
"Alright. If you’re fine, then I’ll head over to the lizard people’s side," said Li Yu.
