Chapter 111: Chapter 27 Wait a Moment
From late June to mid-July, the entire western lands bustled with activity.
In places with villages and farms, as far as the eye could see, there was an expanse of golden splendor as the farmers swung their short sickles, sweating profusely in the fields.
The Arias family’s earlier sown carrots had also arrived at the time of harvest.
Although the carrots in the fields appeared to be growing well, this year’s yield had significantly decreased compared to previous years.
Moreover, this gap was not temporary but was expected to persist, with no indication of when it could be replenished.
As Ireya inspected the family’s various estates, her expression remained solemn throughout.
It wasn’t until she heard that Knight Pablo had returned that the young girl’s countenance relaxed slightly, and she immediately rushed back by carriage at the first opportunity.
Having been taken down by Alfred with only three men at Teacup Castle, Knight Pablo, who had originally been responsible for guarding the castle, felt too ashamed to continue in his post, and with the added personal grudge against Alfred, he simply returned to focus on managing his own estate.
However, the new Family Head Ireya had too few people she could use, and having recently experienced the desertion of the Purple Sparrow Flower Knight, the young girl had grown generally distrustful of those who had defected over with the Purple Sparrow Flower.
After much consideration, she decided to re-employ the long-serving Pablo to the Arias family.
Miss Rabbit’s first task for Pablo was to lead a team to Rock Snow City, to receive the members of the Weiting Family who had been exiled to the western lands from Marquis Kuren’s hands.
Pablo set out about twenty days ago and although he encountered some difficulties on the way, he ultimately completed the mission successfully and brought the people back to Green Field.
Even after several consecutive days of travel, seemingly travel-worn, Pablo still refused to rest in Teacup Castle or relax with a glass or two of wine; instead, he stubbornly waited outside the city, engaging in a staring contest with Alfred on the city walls.
The onlookers grew anxious for the two men, fearing they might suddenly come to blows.
Fortunately, it wasn’t long before Ireya’s carriage appeared at the foot of the hill, and Pablo shifted his gaze away from his archenemy. He straightened the armor on his body and went forward to greet her.
"Miss Ireya, I have brought the people back for you," he said.
"Thank you for your hard work, Pablo."
Miss Rabbit’s gaze moved beyond the knight’s shoulder, curiously sizing up the people behind him.
At a casual glance, those people bore a striking resemblance to the Batoris Family with their tiny eyes and almost invisible ears; the difference lay in their mostly yellow-brown hair.
The Weiting Family’s family crest bore a sea lion, and their kinsmen had inherited some of the sea lion’s characteristics, making them quite recognizable.
With the Arias Family in the west and the Weiting Family in the east, separated by a vast distance, Ireya had actually never met anyone from the Weiting Family before.
Yet the group before her, aside from their basic physical characteristics, was hard to associate with the once illustrious noble house of the Empire.
They were dressed in tatters, their complexions pale as if they hadn’t seen sunlight in a long time, and their bodies were generally much thinner than average; their arms and legs resembled sticks, yet their bellies were disproportionately large, creating a bizarre appearance.
But what was most unforgettable were their numb expressions, the vacant looks in their eyes, and their dull gazes, as if they were mere stones, no longer responsive to external stimuli.
On the way here, Ireya had been thinking about how to establish some rules for these people.
After all, their families were once among the top elites in the Empire’s power hierarchy, whereas the Arias family was just a small noble on the distant frontier.
The disparity in status between them was even greater than the vast bay outside Crab’s Corner. How could the people from the Weiting family possibly submit obediently to her command?
The reason the young lady was willing to accept these politically sensitive refugees settling in Green Field was their labor, their ability to farm the land, not to have another group of noble lords to deal with.
This point needed to be made clear from the start, so that both sides could live together peacefully without causing trouble for each other.
So before these people even arrived, Ireya had already made preparations.
She could be a little tougher at their first meeting, and if any arrogant pricks dared to confront her, she would make an example of them by imposing an additional twenty percent tax and an extra month of corvée labor.
In any case, she had to establish her image as a leader whose authority was not to be challenged.
However, plans couldn’t keep up with changes, and when she actually saw the people from the Weiting family, Miss Rabbit just found them so pitiful, like walking corpses, and couldn’t help but feel compassion.
The recent rebellion had been plotted and participated in only by Hilda and a few core members within the family, yet many other relatives, who weren’t in the Royal Capital or at Crab’s Corner at the time, were also rounded up.
Thrown into the dungeon, they were kept there for five years.
Many died in those dungeons, and those who were fortunate enough to survive all ended up looking like wretched ghosts.
Furthermore, with Jude’s identity exposed not long ago, even after more than nine hundred years, the descendants of the Enríquez family still had to hide and keep away from towns, wandering the wilderness alone or with a dog, leading a nomadic life.
The young Green Field Master felt the cruelty of the power struggle once again.
The joy she had felt at recruiting people to cultivate the land had also dissipated quite a bit. She sighed and said to Fosto, "Take them to the nearby manor for now. We’ve also harvested the crops recently, so distribute more bread and carrots to them. The lessons on farming can wait another couple of days."
Fosto nodded, "Yes, Miss."
After Ireya had finished speaking and was about to return to the castle, a person suddenly rushed out from the crowd, stumbling towards her and crying out, "Wait, wait!"
"Who goes there? How dare you attack Miss Ireya!" Knight Pablo had already drawn the sword from his waist, positioning himself in front of Miss Rabbit, while casting a wary glance at the newcomer.
However, the man was not intimidated by the knight’s glinting sword and continued to approach, his face filled with hope as he looked past the knight towards the young lady, "You, you are the Lord of this land, right? Please save my sister!!!"
Ireya patted Pablo on the back to signal that he didn’t need to be so tense, then turned to look at the young man, "What has happened to your sister?"
"About two days ago, she suddenly started vomiting and having diarrhea, couldn’t keep anything down, and developed a high fever. Eventually, she was hardly able to walk, and a few of us took turns carrying her here with great difficulty. But her condition has shown no signs of improvement, and she needs medical attention immediately."
