Chapter 87: No One Would Say No to More Money
Once they got home, Calix and Leslie parted ways, going to their respective bedrooms. They met shortly to have a light dinner prepared by Aunt Wendy.
"Get a good night of sleep," said Calix before once again they did their separate activities, "I’ll tell Edward to handle the case tomorrow."
Understanding that CEO Xu was worried about her, Leslie responded cheekily, "I’ll look for articles and videos about Rome. Those will help me to sleep better."
Calix’s helpless grin prompted Leslie to chuckle.
On the following day, as promised, Calix gave Edward a new order. Leslie was relaxing in the private lounge when the chief personal assistant was summoned by CEO Xu.
"Check this woman’s bank account, the money flow, everything. Look for this jade pendant too."
Calix gave a few pieces of paper to Edward. Several photos of Sarah and the pendant were printed on them. Irene handed the information to him last night.
Aside from that, Calix also mentioned Sarah’s previous thievery of the sapphire bracelet. He wanted evidence on that too because only Leslie had it before.
"Sarah Yao, a maid at the Li family’s ancestral home," Edward scanned the words printed under the woman’s photo, wanting to get the gist of the situation, "She’s the closest maid to Mrs. Xu before, right?"
Sensing curiosity in Edward’s eyes, Calix explained, "She pushed my wife down the stairs and stole the pendant from her. I want to know where she sold it. If you find it, get it back no matter how much it costs."
"What?" Edward’s confusion heightened. In disbelief, he stared at Calix, "Boss Xu, are you sure? No one in the Li family knows who the culprit is yet, where did you get this info?"
Calix was not offended by Edward’s questions. The latter was suspicious because he knew nothing about this matter when usually Calix would entrust the investigation to him.
"Your boss is capable of doing this by himself," Calix smirked, intending to annoy Edward, "I’ve confirmed that fact but, we need concrete evidence to show to the Li family. That’s your job, my outstanding assistant."
Edward eyed impassively at Calix, understanding full well that his boss wouldn’t explain in detail to him.
"Yes, yes, I’ll get this done," Edward surrendered to his fate. He quickly cheered his mood by thinking of his fat paycheck, "I’ll keep gathering the orphans’ data too. Boss Xu, you better triple my bonus this year."
Calix’s lips twitched, "Your bonus is already triple than most of the staff’s but, you want me to triple it again?"
"Yes," replied Edward shamelessly, "No one will say no to more money."
Calix rolled his eyes. He answered monotonously, "...up to you. Get these things done first. Compile more data on the orphans and find evidence against this woman. Oh, have someone on the lookout. Don’t let her suddenly escape."
"Yes, sir!"
Driven by the promise of getting bountiful bonuses, Edward immediately headed out of the CEO’s office. He swore to swiftly and efficiently solve both of these cases.
Calix shook his head before exhaling a sigh. He was sure that Edward would come with the answers soon.
Well...
Calix had just given the task regarding Sarah on Tuesday. By Friday morning, the expert Edward delivered the outcome the former desired.
"You already got everything?" Calix laughed, amazed by Edward’s speed, "Seriously?"
Edward appeared together with a thin pile of papers and a USB. He placed everything on the huge work desk.
"She sold the pendant to a pawnshop, Easy Breezy Pawn. The jade..."
"What kind of name is that?" Calix scowled. He quickly read what was printed on the paper, "Huh, easy-peasy?"
"..."
Edward coughed once before continuing to explain, "She pawned the pendant a few days after the accident. She got quite a huge deal. As for the pendant, I’ve retrieved it."
Taking out something from the pocket of his coat, Edward presented a red velvet box to Calix. The box quickly exchanged hands.
Click!
Once the lid was opened, an opal-shaped jade pendant greeted Calix. After looking at the intricate cloud-like waves on the front, he checked the backside.
Shen.
This was Leslie’s late maternal grandmother’s family name. Lina Shen was her maiden name.
Yes! This was indeed the lost pendant!
Calix pursed his lips, excitement spreading in his heart. He wanted to give this to Leslie as soon as possible but, she was out on a new adventure. She said she wanted to visit the park around the company.
"I’ve e-mailed the CCTV copies to you, Boss Xu," Edward pressed several times on his tablet, "You also can watch them here."
Calix took the tablet handed by Edward. He tapped on the Play button, intently focusing on the video.
The recording was vivid, allowing Calix to clearly see Sarah dealing with the staff of the pawnshop. She hid under huge sunglasses but, her identity was unmistakable.
"How about when she stole the bracelet?" Calix wondered about Sarah’s previous theft, "Have you got the evidence too?"
A smug smile curved on Edward’s face, "Boss Xu, do you realize who you’re talking to? Of course, I’ve gotten all the necessary evidence as well."
"..."
Calix clamped his mouth shut, holding back from smacking this conceited young man. He forgot that he was just the same as Edward.
After clarifying everything Edward presented to him, a satisfied Calix began thinking of the next step. He wanted to deal with Sarah as soon as possible but, he needed to talk to Leslie first.
"Boss, there’s a new update," Edward read a newly received message from his work phone. His brows furrowed, "Our man said Miss Yao has just tendered her resignation."
"What?" Calix scowled, annoyed by Sarah’s next move, "In twenty-four hours? Or, a two-week notice?"
Fortunately, Calix already had someone to tail Sarah’s every move. He wouldn’t allow that woman to slip out of his trap.
Sarah might be alarmed by Irene’s instigation last Monday. Weighing between continuing to work at the prominent Li family or escaping from her crime, it seemed like she opted for the latter.
"A month’s notice, but..." Edward let out a sigh, "Who knows? She might run away at night. She plans to visit a nightclub tonight. Tomorrow’s her day off."
Calix nodded, sharing the same sentiment as Edward. A dog backed to the corner tended to bite.
"Tell our man to continue spying on that woman. You may leave now."
Edward smirked, "Does this mean I’ve secured half of the promised new bonus?"
Calix’s lips twitched, "...get out."
"Yes, boss!"
If only Calix could fire a laser from his eyes, he would have done so toward Edward countless times already.
Sighing out loud, Calix reached out for the red velvet box again. He looked at the jade pendant nestled inside, thinking how much it meant to Leslie.
"Calix."
Calix flinched. He abruptly looked up from the box.
Leslie was standing opposite the huge work desk. A smile was plastered on her lips.
"...when did you get in? Ah, I mean, when did you return?" asked Calix, a bit stuttering.
"Just now. I saw Edward coming out," Leslie’s eyes drifted from Calix’s face to the thing in his hands, "What are you looking at?"
Calix relaxed his countenance. He rotated the box, letting it face Leslie.
"Your lost pendant. We got it back."
"...what?"
The green jade was reflected in Leslie’s surprised eyes.
