Chapter 80: Who Else Was Aware of the Pendant’s Disappearance?

"I want one chocolate coffee ice cream and one strawberry yogurt ice cream."

Standing opposite the paying counter, Calix ordered two ice creams. Irene told him to bring her to this ice cream shop – Moo’s Happy Scoop. He needed to do a short detour to go to Jadeite Peak later.

"Please take your orders there, mister," instructed the female staff, smiling brightly at Calix.

After slipping his credit card back into his wallet, Calix went to wait at the other side of the counter. His towering figure in a customized navy blue suit attracted attention.

Irene and Leslie were waiting for him at a corner of the shop, sitting next to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall. It was a table for four. Calix deliberately chose that one when Irene pointed to a two-seater table earlier.

"Hurm... I never think my brother-in-law will attract bees and butterflies wherever he goes," commented Irene, amused by how many pairs of eyes looked at Calix, "He surely notices that, doesn’t he?"

Leslie chuckled. Irene’s remarks tickled her heart. She could imagine Calix smiling proudly if he ever heard what Irene said.

Soon, Calix returned with two cones of ice cream. Irene stared at him in disbelief when he handed one ice cream to her.

"Brother-in-law, is the strawberry-flavored one yours?" Irene took the chocolate coffee ice cream from Calix, her eyes landed on his.

"What? Can’t a grownup man like me pick strawberry yogurt ice cream?" Calix raised his brows. He sat on the chair opposite Irene.

"No," Irene stared at her dark-colored ice cream, "But, I think the staff guessed my chocolate coffee was yours."

"Doesn’t matter ah," Calix shrugged, not caring what the staff or anyone thought about him, "Eat the ice cream."

"Yes, yes."

Irene and Calix both enjoyed their ice creams. Leslie pouted, wondering how good the frozen dessert tasted. Her expression was seen by Calix as she sat next to Irene.

"Hurm~ How tasty," Calix directly looked at Leslie, his lips tinged with pink color. He had eaten most of the ice cream, "It’ll be a waste if one comes here but don’t buy this ice cream."

Leslie widened her eyes, glaring at Calix.

This man did it on purpose!

Calix grinned. He proceeded to finish everything. His big mouth devoured the rest of the ice cream in a short time.

"This shop opened recently," Irene shuddered, feeling the cold spreading, "Two months ago. If Big Sister is awake, she’ll surely bring me here."

Calix flinched while Leslie shifted her eyes to Irene. Something warm tugged at her heart as the happy memories of Charlene with her younger sister resurfaced in her mind.

Well, if she ever woke up someday, she should bring Irene here or anywhere the teenager would like. After all, Irene was her sister in this world.

Calix’s gaze fell on Leslie who was looking at Irene. Exhaling a sigh, he took another bite of the refreshing ice cream before breaking the momentary silence.

"I wanted to meet you because of your sister," Calix lowered his tone, staring at Irene, "There’s something I need to tell you."

Irene paused. She looked up from the ice cream to her brother-in-law. Her expression suddenly tensed.

"What is it? Brother-in-law, is my sister’s health bad?"

"Ah, no, not that," Calix quickly refuted, trying to chase Irene’s worries away, "She’s in a good state. Two caretakers are looking after her."

Hearing that, Irene let out a sigh of relief, "I hope Big Sister will wake up soon. I miss her so much."

Leslie lowered her head as guilt crept into her heart.

Even if she regained consciousness – successfully claiming Charlene’s body as her own, she wouldn’t be the sister Irene was missing.

’No, no! Stop thinking like that!’

Inwardly shaking her head, Leslie quickly recomposed herself. That kind of thinking would eventually eat her alive.

"Calix," Leslie called him for the first time, her countenance expressing her concern, "Please ask her about the pendant now."

Calix subtly nodded. He immediately became the mediator between Leslie and Irene even though the latter was not aware of it.

"Rather than telling you something, I want to ask."

Calix’s words piqued Irene’s interest. Her round eyes were focused on him.

"Ask me anything," Irene bluntly stated, "If it’s for my sister’s wellness, I’ll answer as much as I can."

Calix smiled faintly. Without beating around the bush, he inquired, "Irene, have you seen your sister’s jade pendant anywhere after the incident?"

Irene was stunned. She didn’t foresee the question coming from her brother-in-law.

"You know about it, Brother-in-law?" Irene frowned, wary of that fact.

Calix ignored the traces of suspicions in Irene’s voice. He continued talking, "That pendant is your sister’s prized possession, isn’t it? Did it get lost after the staircase accident?"

Bewildered, Irene’s eyes widened. She stiffly nodded, admitting to Calix’s question.

"Big Sister... always wore the pendant," Irene lowered her tone, she seemed to be more distressed, "So it’s weird when it’s nowhere to be found. Not on her body and anywhere else."

Calix was relieved to hear that. It meant Irene was aware of the pendant’s disappearance.

"Aside from you, who else noticed it went missing?"

If Leslie treasured the jade pendant a great deal, everyone in the Li family should be conscious of that fact.

Wasn’t it?

A dark cloud was cast on Irene’s gloomy expression. She bitterly spat out, "...only me."

Calix was stunned, so did Leslie. They watched Irene finishing the ice cream, her eyes started to redden.

"...only you who realized it?"

Calix thought he heard it wrong. Blinking his eyes, he stared at Irene dubiously.

"I told Mom and Dad... about Big Sister’s pendant went missing after the accident," Irene chomped on the waffle cone, angrily eating it, "They said maybe Big Sister just kept it somewhere."

Irene begrudgingly explained more to the surprised Calix. Leslie was caught in a daze. She barely regained her composure, unwilling to miss hearing everything.

"I looked everywhere in Big Sister’s room but... I found nothing. I know her. She wouldn’t separate herself from the pendant. I told Mom and Dad again to widen the search, they persuaded me to be patient. I just thought... that pendant might..."

Calix faintly muttered, interjecting the rest of Irene’s words.

"Might be with the perpetrator. The one who pushed your sister down the stairs."

Irene clammed her mouth shut. She repeatedly nodded her head, agreeing with her brother-in-law.

"...that’s right. Brother-in-law, do you know who took it?"

Irene was hopeful to know who made Leslie like that. Her young mind thought that Calix might have a solution to unravel the truth even though he was only recently married to her elder sister.

Calix pursed his lips, subtly glancing in Leslie’s direction.

"Tell her what she should do," Leslie said stiffly, looking uncomfortable with the situation.

Calix nodded once. He shifted his focus again on Irene. The high school girl finished the last of the cone.

"There’s a suspect in mind," Calix recalled what he discussed with Leslie this morning in the car, "I want to know whether it’s her or not. Can you bring up the pendant when she’s there?"

"...who?"

Irene was intrigued. Her eyes were full of hope.

"Your sister’s closest maid, Sarah. I think she’s suspicious."

Calix imagined Irene would doubt him. Her response caught him off guard.

"That maid?" Irene scowled, her round eyes glowering, "Hah! I believe she did it too!"

Calix wandered his bewildered gaze to Leslie who shared the same look as him.
