Chapter 561: SS11: The Months Before Spring
In the following months, changes gradually happened in the manor, filled with anticipation, love and tender moments. Every day was a celebration of life as they expected their newest member.
Leslie’s pregnancy was relatively smooth. She was fortunate enough to escape the worst of morning sickness, only experiencing mild fatigue in the early weeks.
Calix, ever the loving and doting husband, took every opportunity to support Leslie. He often put on his chef hat. He treated her cravings as urgent missions no matter the hour.
Despite Leslie trying not to bother Calix too much at midnight, the man still woke up without fail and delivered the tasty yummy to quench her hunger.
One memorable night, Calix woke up from a gentle nudge. As he opened his eyes, he saw the sheepish look on Leslie’s face, faintly illuminated by the underbed lights.
"Sorry, honey, but... I kept dreaming of waffles. With lots of strawberries and whipped cream ah. Also, chocolate drizzle."
The vivid descriptions of the waffles elicited laughter from Calix’s mouth. Propping himself up from the bed, he responded, "Seems like the baby will be another strawberry lover ah."
"Hehe, seems so~"
Leslie insisted on following Calix to the kitchen, saying she wanted to admire her husband as he prepared the waffles for her. Unable to resist his wife, Calix could only agree.
CEO Xu cooked more than ever during the duration of his beloved wife’s pregnancy.
Meanwhile, Calliope was ecstatic about the idea of becoming a big sister. Her excitement was palpable.
Calliope often followed Leslie around, asking endless questions about the child. She also did the same when Aunt Wendy was around, thinking the housekeeper should know a thing or two about a baby.
"Mama, can Poppy’s little sibling hear Poppy’s voice now?"
"Mama, look! Hiyahh! Poppy will protect baby from evil people!"
"Granny Wendy, can Poppy share this strawberry with baby? How about this chocolate?"
The entire main Xu family often inquired about Leslie and the baby’s health.
Old Madam Xu and Harper always sent nutritious tonics and soups to Graceville Manor, intending for Leslie. Andrian also procured some herbs that were beneficial for pregnant women.
Evelyn couldn’t help but get adorable baby outfits whenever she was abroad as gifts.
As for Vernon and Lucille, they delivered good news to the Xu family in the late summer. She was also pregnant, to the joy of the Xu family.
"Woww! Mia will be a big sister too!"
Amelia’s declaration received a hug from Calliope who was also overjoyed for her cousin.
Old Madam Xu declared this was the happiest moment for her. She couldn’t wait to welcome two new great-granchildren next year.
As for Irene, she was currently in Montreaux. She successfully scored a place in the student exchange program.
Irene video-called Leslie at least once a week, asking about her sister’s health and sharing her life at the boarding school.
As the weeks changed to months, Leslie’s due date gradually approached. Even then, she and Calix decided not to inquire about the child’s gender.
Calix took his role as a father very seriously, not just to the unborn child but, also to Calliope. He, including Leslie, made sure their firstborn felt included in every step of the journey.
Calix and Leslie brought Calliope from shopping for baby clothes to picking out toys. They attentively listened to the little dumpling’s opinions.
"Look, Mama! They are so small ah. Can Poppy’s little sibling fit in these shoes?"
"Papa, Poppy think Baby will love this cute bunny. It’s yellow!"
"Mama, Papa, does Baby need lots of socks?"
To Calliope, preparing herself to be the best big sister ever was the most important responsibility she had ever undertaken.
As Leslie’s pregnancy progresses, Calix decided to decorate the nursery himself. He wanted it to be perfect, a space that provided warmth and comfort for their newest family member.
Of course, Calix didn’t forget to weigh Leslie and Calliope’s opinions throughout the process.
"I’m thinking light yellow for the walls," Calix told Leslie one evening as they sat on the couch, flipping through a catalog of baby room designs, "What do you think, sweetheart?"
"Yellow is lovely," Leslie agreed, resting her head on Calix’s shoulders, "It’s cheerful but soothing. How about we pair it with mint green?"
"Also pink, blue and orange!" exclaimed Calliope, reading a new storybook, earning laughter from Calix and Leslie.
Calix spent his weekends painting the nursery. He and Leslie had already decided on the furniture, only waiting for them to be delivered here.
Calliope insisted on helping thus, Calix handed her the task of doodling on one side of the walls. She drew flowers, foxes, bunnies, cakes and pieces of bread using a variety of colors.
"Papa, Papa make it for Baby?" asked Calliope when she saw Calix crocheting a colorful blanket, her voice brimming with curiosity.
"Yes. This is for Poppy’s little sibling," Calix chuckled, showing the blanket in his hands, "Papa will make a toy too. How about one like Mimo?"
"Yes! Yes! Poppy can matchy-matchy with Baby!"
Leslie laughed as she listened to Calix and Calliope’s conversation. She was lying on the recliner chair, resting after having a fulfilling dinner.
Throughout the months, Calix’s group of friends also often sent their thoughtful gifts—including from Ryken who had resumed his travel.
Leslie also received some gifts from Violet who seemed happier being with Xander now. The frequency of the stupid misunderstandings between them had dropped drastically.
During one of their gathering hosted in the manor, Calix teasingly asked Xander, "Can we expect a proposal from you soon? You’ve behaved well for Violet to accept it, don’t you?"
Xander smacked Calix’s back while Violet smiled sheepishly, her cheeks red but, with a beaming look on her face.
Leslie inwardly thought that the wedding of the year between the male lead and the female lead would happen anytime soon.
Then...
One crisp spring morning, the bundle of joy arrived, bringing the promise of new beginnings and a love that would only deepen with time.
