Chapter 559: SS9: Of Sunflowers and the Azure Sky
Logan drove Calix, Leslie and Calliope to the hospital first thing in the morning.
The early morning sunlight spilled over the rolling green hills, painting the horizon with hues of amber, violet and gold. Mist still lingered in the valleys, casting a dreamy haze over the scenery.
The sleepyhead Calliope dozed off in her child’s car seat. She loosely hugged Mimo, the crochet fox toy’s head tilting to one side.
Calix and Leslie sat quietly, their hands linking together. Both of their hearts and minds raced yet, still oddly calmed by the serene surroundings.
The lingering tension in their hearts faded once the doctor declared that Leslie’s pregnancy was in a good state. The middle-aged, Italian female doctor encouraged them to do another checkup once they returned home.
"The predicted due date is in April next year."
The overjoyed Calix and Leslie thanked the doctor before stepping out of the office. The radiance on their faces mirrored one another.
"We can tell Poppy now," whispered Calix to Leslie as they walked out to the corridor.
"Hehe, let’s do it," Leslie nodded, quickly agreeing with Calix.
Calliope waited outside with Logan. The little dumpling didn’t know the reason her parents came to the hospital yet.
"Mama, Papa, are you sick?"
Calliope jumped down the chair, running toward Leslie and Calliope. Even though her parents and Logan reassured her that they were fine, the little one still worried.
Well, not too worried because Calix bribed Calliope with a yummy soft cookie before meeting the doctor. The crumbs were still left on her lips.
Leslie and Calix exchanged soft laughter. The man crouched down, lifting Calliope to perch on his arm.
"Mama and Papa aren’t sick," Leslie chuckled. She placed her thumb on Calliope’s face, gently brushing the crumbs away, "We have good news to tell Poppy~"
"Good news?"
Calliope tilted her head, wondering what kind of good news her mama and papa received from the doctor. The curls of her twin pigtails tilted alongside her little head.
Leslie glanced at Calix, the smile on her lips softening. He nodded, encouraging her to break the news to the confused Calliope.
"Hehe, well~"
Leslie leaned closer toward Calliope, whispering softly into the little dumpling’s ear. Her cry of joy echoed in the corridor, eliciting laughter from Leslie and Calix.
"Poppy... Poppy will be a big sister? Really, Mama, Papa? Really?"
Calliope’s eyes widened, shimmering with wonder. Her small voice trembled at the end, filled with awe. She darted her eyes from Leslie to Calix, still surprised by the news.
"Yes," Calix nodded, his hand gently pinching Calliope’s right check, "Your little sibling is growing in Mama’s tummy. Poppy will be a big sister ah."
What happened next was Calliope throwing her arms around Leslie’s neck, catching her parents off guard. Calix carefully let Leslie carry the little dumpling, still supporting her bum to reduce the strain.
"Hehe, why are you crying ah? Isn’t this good news?" Leslie laughed as she patted Calliope’s back, "Poppy wanna be a big sister, right?"
"Yes! Poppy will be the best big sister ever!"
Leslie and Calix burst out into laughter before they quickly stopped themselves, realizing they were in a public area. The family of three and Logan left the hospital shortly after.
For now, Calix and Leslie decided to keep the good news to themselves and Calliope. Logan and Ethan were told to keep quiet as well.
Calix asked if Leslie wanted to keep her pregnancy under wraps until her first trimester passed. He refused to force her into sharing the news. It should depend on her wish.
Leslie’s answer was...
"Let’s tell Grandma and everyone when we’re back. Maybe, during a meal together."
Thus, CEO Xu quickly agreed, all according to his lady’s wish.
The time was nearing noon when Logan drove away from the hospital.
The summer sun stretched its warm rays over the stone cottages, bathing the rolling hills where the lush vineyards prospered.
"Papa, where we going ah?"
Calliope chirped from her child’s car seat, her excitement bubbling over. Hugging Mimo tightly, she looked from Calix to the scenery outside the van.
"You’ll see, my buttercup," answered Calix with a playful grin, glancing at Calliope and Leslie, "It’s a surprise for Mama and you."
Leslie, seated beside Calix, arching her brows in a teasing way, "You’re being secretive ah. Can I get a hint?"
Calix hadn’t said where they would go when all of them boarded the van again. Leslie initially thought they would return to the villa they stayed for this week.
"No hints," Calix flicked his index finger, swinging it to left and right repeatedly, "Just trust me ah. It’ll be exciting and memorable."
Leslie and Calliope exchanged a glance, both wearing the same curious look. The little dumpling shrugged to which the lady chuckled.
Soon, Logan pulled into a quaint estate nestled amid rows of golden sunflowers. The rustic charm of the place was very enchanting.
A cozy stone villa with terracotta roofs stood in the middle, surrounded by blooming lavender and a terrace overlooking the field.
The gold and purple hues of the flowers added more charming points to the serene landscape.
"Whoa! It’s so pretty!"
Calliope quickly jumped on the ground once Calix let her out of the child’s car seat. He returned his attention to Leslie, holding her hand.
"Come on, sweetheart. Let’s enjoy the day."
Leslie smilingly squeezed Calix’s hand before he led her to the terrace. A few attendants welcomed them, all dressed in white shirts and burgundy pants and vests.
A beautifully set table awaited the family of three, adorned with fresh flowers and shaded by a vine-covered pergola. From there, they could see the endless fields stretching toward the horizon.
"Is this a private restaurant, or something like that?" asked Leslie, unable to contain her curiosity when two of the attendants began serving plates of dishes.
"Mr. Nucci told me about this place," Calix brought up the older man’s name. He winked playfully at Leslie, "If only he knew I brought you here to celebrate our new baby."
"Hehe, we should tell him and Mrs. Nucci later."
Looking at Calix and Calliope, a warm smile lit up Leslie’s face. She gently placed her palm on her tummy, hoping to meet this little one soon.
