Chapter 541: Weathering the Years of Marriage

Before commencing the banquet, Andrian and Harper gave a speech. They stood on the elevated platform, adorned by flowers and lights, being the center of the attention.

The celebrated couple donned matching shades of silver and black. Andrian was charming in his tailored three-piece suit while Harper was elegant in her floor-length dress.

Leslie, sitting at the front row table intended for the close family, watched her parents-in-law in awe. Calliope also did the same, her round eyes admiring her grandparents.

"Papa, Mama," Calliope whispered, almost whistling, "Grandma and Grandpa look so good."

The little dumpling’s remarks earned soft laughter from Calix and Leslie. They sang to the same tune as their child.

"Yes, Poppy. They look good," Leslie said quietly. She gently rubbed Calliope’s little head.

Calix smiled in helplessness, "We’ll go and greet them later, en?"

"Okay~"

The quartet slowed down the music, being on cue with the emcee who handed the microphone to Andrian. The older man’s deep and steady voice resonated across the hall.

"Good evening, everyone," Andrian began, a warm smile lighting up his face, "First and foremost, Harper and I want to thank each and every one of you for being here with us tonight."

Andrian paused, slowly sweeping his gaze across the hall. The guests smiled in response, some nodded lightly at him and Harper.

Glancing lovingly at Harper, Andrian continued, "Forty years ago, I stood at the altar with the love of my life. I made promises that I’ve carried with me every single day until now."

Leslie unconsciously parted her lips, in awe as she listened to Andrian’s words. She knew that her parents-in-law had been married for so long but, hearing it again flooded her heart with admiration.

Four decades of marriage; they had been through so much together.

Andrian resumed, moving his eyes away from Harper yet, one of his hands remained wrapping her waist. Once again his voice echoed in the grand hall.

"Those promises; of love, respect and partnership, are what have brought us here today. Well, if in ten years we’re still alive, I guess we’ll celebrate our golden jubilee. What do you say, my love?"

Andrian’s remarks caused waves of laughter to erupt in the hall. Leslie and Calix exchanged a smile with each other, also entertained by the former’s words.

Harper took the microphone from Andrian, laughing affectionately at her husband. Once she spoke, her warm and lively voice replaced his deep and steady one.

"Let me tell you. Our forty years weren’t always smooth sailing, especially in the beginning. Still, the countless beautiful moments far outweighed any hardship. Andrian has been my rock, my greatest blessing."

Extending one hand, Harper gestured at the table where Old Madam Xu, Vernon, Calix, Evelyn and their little families sat. Irene also had a place there.

"Our children and our grandchildren. We’re endowed to come this far with them along the way. And, Andrian and I are blessed with two additions this year."

Leslie blinked, sensing eyes began moving toward her, coming from the curious guests. Harper’s last remark clearly meant for her and Calliope.

Harper smiled, brighter than before as she lovingly addressed the lady and the little one. Her voice had a touch of emotion as she spoke.

"Charlene and Calliope have graced our lives with their presence. Thank you for being with Calix and us. Your father and I wish you three a lifetime of happiness."

Andrian leaned closer to the microphone, jokingly added, "Maybe we will have more additions in the future. Who knows?"

The guests chuckled and lightly clapped their hands, understanding what Andrian meant. Harper shot her husband a look, nudging his elbow.

Andrian and Harper made it clear through their speeches that their new daughter-in-law and granddaughter were ones of the Xu family. Only fools would dare look down on them.

"Sweetheart."

Leslie drifted her eyes toward Calix, only to see a beaming look on his face. The lovebirds smiled lovingly at one another, grasping and squeezing each other’s hands.

They also wished to be like Andrian and Harper, weathering the years of marriage until they grew old together.

On the stage, Andrian had taken the microphone from Harper, once again speaking.

"Now, we won’t keep you with too many stories. Please, everyone, we hope you’ll enjoy the night."

"Yes. It’s the night of celebration. Relax and enjoy."

Andrian and Harper ended the speech shortly after. Hand-in-hand, they walked down the platform. The pair of spouses received applause from the guests.

As the guests began savoring the food, Andrian and Harper went from one table to the next, greeting them more personally and receiving more well wishes.

At the main table, Calliope and Amelia also had started eating. The two cherubs whose cheeks couldn’t stretch out further, eating every dish possible.

"You got crumbs on your face ah," Calix clicked his tongue, eyeing Calliope who forked her next serving of food, "Don’t look as if your papa has starved you."

"Poppy is hungry," Calliope declared before looking at Amelia, "Poppy and Mia will go and play after eating. Right, Mia?"

"Yesh!" Amelia bobbed her little head up and down, her cheeks stuffed with food, "Go play."

Amused laughter rippled through the table. Evelyn and Irene teased Calliope and Amelia while Lucille, Leslie, Calix and Vernon looked lovingly at their daughters.

"Grandma, you look tipsy," commented Evelyn as her focus shifted to Old Madam Xu, "You don’t even drink ah."

"Hahaha," Old Madam Xu laughed, sounding merrier than usual. Sweeping her gaze across the table, she remarked, "Even tea can make me drunk when I’m this happy ah."

"Aww, Grandma~" Evelyn hugged Old Madam Xu sideways, gently patting the elderly lady’s arm, "Hehe, are you that happy? Seems like you’ll be happier once you get more great-grandchildren ah."

"Hahaha! That’s right! The more, the merrier!"

Helpless laughter came from the others as they saw how joyful the elderly lady was tonight. No one could ever ruin it for her.

Calix and Vernon looked at one another, the two brothers had the thoughts in their minds.

Fortunately, everything involving Nicholas Wu ended before the banquet. If not, they doubted the celebration would be this lively and happy.
