Chapter 527: The Game Had Ended
Standing by the window of the lounge, Leslie threw her gaze outside. Her eyes kept staring in the direction of the main gate, waiting for Calix to return from Vilux. Her figure was faintly reflected on the glass panel.
The time was still early, the clock had just struck eight-fifty in the evening.
Lifting her eyes, Leslie stared at the dark sky, illuminated by the moonlight. The sky was cloudless tonight, showing a clear view of the atmosphere.
’He should be back soon, right?’
Leslie received a text from Calix just now, informing of his return soon. The man didn’t tell her anything about Nicholas. She assumed he wanted to tell her personally once he was home.
Calliope’s voice echoed from behind. The little dumpling was animatedly talking to Director Li through the video call. The orphanage director’s face was clearly displayed on the tablet screen.
"Teacher Liu teach Poppy and Poppy’s friends how to make paper butterfly. Poppy make one pink and one purple butterfly."
"Linlin give Poppy marshmallow. Hehe~ Poppy give her lollipop."
Before, Calliope and Director Li, alongside with her friends in the orphanage, had almost daily video calls. The frequency had decreased to once a week now. Still, they kept in touch.
Tearing her eyes away from the window to Calliope, Leslie slowly walked to the couch where the little one sat. She sank into the plush chair, nodding slightly at Director Li.
"Mrs. Xu, the new building will be ready soon. The children were so happy when they went out buying new furniture two days ago."
Director Li’s whole face beamed with delight. She was referring to the shopping trip for the children the other day.
Now that the new building would be completed soon, Director Li brought the children to choose the furniture and other items at a nearby warehouse. The little ones couldn’t wait to move to the new building.
The old one will undergo renovation soon. It is expected to be completed in late winter.
Director Li’s words pleased Leslie. Both she and Calix had been receiving updates about the construction. Knowing it would be wrapped up soon delighted them.
"My husband should be free next month," Leslie brought up her conversation with Calix before, her voice softening, "We might visit you and the children around that time."
"We’ll surely prepare a feast for you," Director Li chuckled, earnestly wishing for their visit, "Mr. Mo said he wants to cook our area’s autumn specialty if you get to visit us soon."
"Oh? Grandpa Mo will cook?" Calliope chimed in, her eyes glimmering in joy, "Yummy! Poppy wanna eat Grandpa Mo’s food!"
The little dumpling’s remark earned laughter from both Leslie and Director Li. She patted her tummy, the one housing the previous dinner she ate with her mama.
"I should go now. It’s the children’s bedtime," said Director Li, laughter still imbuing her voice, "Let’s talk again later."
"Good night, Director Li," Leslie smiled, understanding that the orphanage director still had other important matters to attend to.
"Granny, bye bye~ Poppy will call Granny again. Good night~"
Calliope waved at the tablet screen, showing a smiling Director Li who returned the same gesture. She cutely wished the middle-aged woman good night.
"Hehe, good night, my dear."
Director Li ended the video call soon after. Calliope tilted her head up, her face beaming with happiness as she stared at Leslie.
"Poppy can visit Granny, Grandpa Mo and everyone, right?"
Letting out soft chuckles, Leslie nodded. She gently stroked Calliope’s head.
"Yes. We’ll go and visit everyone soon."
"Hehe~ Poppy is happy~"
Calliope leaned on Leslie, huddling closer to her mama. The lady smiled in helplessness as she brought the little one to her lap.
Calliope was a little heavier than before but, it was still bearable for Leslie to hold the little one on her lap. Still, she was advised not to carry Calliope when walking.
"Are you waiting for your papa, Poppy?" asked Leslie, her hand lightly rubbing Calliope’s right arm. She dropped kisses atop the little one’s head, smelling her daughter’s favorite body wash.
"Papa won’t come home yet?" Calliope asked her mama in return, thinking of her papa who couldn’t have dinner with them tonight, "Papa is busy, Mama?"
Calliope was quite dispirited when she heard Calix had to go somewhere else during dinnertime. Leslie coaxed her, saying her papa was busy with work.
"Your papa should come home soon. Well, close your eyes if you’re sleepy, Poppy. Mama will wake you up once Papa is back."
"Okay~"
Leslie could just tell Calliope to go upstairs and sleep in her room but, she decided to give some leeway to her daughter tonight. As she hugged Calliope, she sensed the little one relaxing in her arms.
Hehe, Calliope was all chatty and energetic just now, only to fall asleep in the next second.
’I wonder what has happened so far.’
Being surrounded by the quietness of the lounge, Leslie recalled when Calix brought up Xander’s plan to her. Her husband was as surprised as her when he first heard it.
Xander suggested setting up a stage for Nicholas’ capture instead of just sending police to his residence or company. Witnessing the man being humiliated indeed would bring more satisfaction.
After careful consideration, Calix and Leslie agreed.
Thus, Xander hosted a party at Vilux under the pretext of celebrating Ryken’s rare return to the country. By this time, both Ryken and Davin were already aware of Nicholas’ true identity.
Still... Leslie had a hunch that everything had ended. Calix’s wish to end this game soon came true.
’Mimo.’
Curling up her lips, Leslie whispered Mimo’s name in her mind, calling the crochet fox toy telepathically. Its familiar, childlike voice echoed, immediately answering her.
|Leslie, are you relieved now?|
Chuckles slipped out of Leslie’s mouth. Nodding once, she thought further, ’Yes, Mimo. I am beyond happy and relieved.’
Now that they had overcome the last obstacles, they were free to live their new life in this world.
"...he’s here."
Blinking, Leslie’s ear caught the faint hum of the engine running outside, blending with the sound of the tires rolling on the driveway.
He’s home!
