Chapter 512: There Was No Other Truth
While waiting for Xander to speak, Leslie grabbed the dry towels hanging on the recliner chair. She put them on Calix’s back before wrapping herself in another one.
’Thank you.’
Calix mouthed those words to Leslie as he realized the soft fluffy towel providing him warmth from the cool night air. She simply smiled before leaning closer to him.
Shifting his gaze from Leslie to the phone, Calix spoke, his tone hinting at a smile, "So, what is it? Have you lost your voice? Come on, I’m all ears."
"Ha! Calix Xu, you act as if you didn’t lead me to a landmine."
Xander scoffed, clearly both annoyed and amused with Calix. His reaction only lured laughter from his friend.
Calix and Leslie exchanged a look. She bit her lower lip, holding back from laughing alongside her husband.
Xander most likely had uncovered more than Calix. They wouldn’t underestimate the male lead’s ability despite how far-fetched it might sound.
"Calix, I will ask this first."
Xander’s voice resounded again from Calix’s phone. The previous playful annoyance was replaced with something more somber.
Calix simply responded with a hum, waiting for Xander to drop whatever he wanted to clarify. Leslie waited with a bated breath, her gaze locking on her husband’s phone.
"Nicholas Wu. He is your half-uncle, isn’t he?"
Finally.
Despite wording those words into a question, Xander’s tone had a degree of certainty.
He wasn’t asking.
He was stating the truth.
Xander’s words hung in the air, receiving no immediate response from Calix. Drifting his eyes from the phone to Leslie, he saw the concerned look on her face.
Leslie put one palm on Calix’s back, gently stroking him. Myriads of feelings arose in her heart, weaving into tangles.
The deceased Old Master Xu was not Axel’s true grandfather. Still, because he had been living as Calix for the past six years, the original Calix’s memories and feelings became his own.
The sense of betrayal the original Calix felt had merged with Axel’s feelings, reminding him how devastated the former was during those times.
Calix parted his lips, finally replying after a short pause from his end.
"Yes. He’s my grandfather’s child with his mistress."
Xander said nothing but, Calix sensed tension coming from the end of the line. His own heart was constricted by the prodding apprehension.
A frown marred Leslie’s forehead, almost merging her eyebrows together. Staring at Calix’s side profile, she noticed the changes on her husband’s face.
After a period of silence, Xander resumed speaking, silently asking Calix, "Since when did you know?"
"Just a few months back, around two I think," Calix let out a sigh. A faint smile hung on his lips, "I heard that he’s back in the country. He plans to ruin our family."
Calix could tell how outrageous the finding about Nicholas was to Xander. His friend might even think he was mistaken, but...
There was no other truth.
Swallowing a sigh from rolling out of his mouth, Calix shifted to asking Xander instead of waiting for another one from his friend.
"Xander, what else did you find?"
"I discovered..."
Calix and Leslie listened to Xander in silence. Only the man’s voice echoed in the air, rising above the gentle lapping of water and the rustling of the leaves.
The moonlight still cast tiny glitters on the pool’s water, the light reflecting on Calix and Leslie’s tensed countenances.
Xander began by saying he unearthed Nicholas’ secret identity as the deceased Old Master Xu’s biological son—the one exiled from the country decades ago.
Xander also learned about Nicholas’ involvement with a gang, including how he might play a hand in ruining the mob by colluding with the rival.
Calix was both surprised and amazed by the progress on Xander’s side. He couldn’t help but marvel at how quickly and efficiently the male lead did his part.
If this went on, Nicholas might meet his end much, much sooner. It was time for his curtain call.
"It seems like he hasn’t noticed that you’re watching his movement," said Xander, his tone lacing with awe, "So far, that’s it. Did I miss something?"
Calix nodded despite knowing Xander couldn’t see him. Glancing at Leslie, he smiled faintly at her. She responded with a reassuring squeeze of his arm.
"There’s another one, Xander."
Xander lowered his voice, "What is it? What did I miss?"
"He’s the prime suspect behind my accident six years ago."
Xander gasped, his surprise was palpable, "...what? Come again? You suspect him?"
"Yes."
Without wasting any time, Calix explained further. He mentioned how he discovered Nicholas made a quick visit to the country six years ago, the time coincided with the banquet Calix attended on behalf of his parents.
"My brother found his traces in the surveillance videos."
Calix explained the videos Vernon showed him two days ago to Xander. The footage showed a clear sighting of Nicholas in the hotel, especially near the banquet hall.
"We didn’t know about him before so, we thought he was just a passerby. There’s no concrete evidence until now. Still, he’s highly likely the mastermind."
Xander was silent even after Calix finished speaking. Stillness enveloped the two friends as the words sank into the former’s mind.
When Xander finally spoke, he sounded more irritated than before.
"Calix, you want to stop him, right? Seek revenge? I’ll help you."
Xander’s words lured laughter out of Calix’s mouth, amused to notice the suppressed fury from his friend’s voice.
Thankfully, the male lead continued being his friend. He could inevitably benefit from the former’s glowing and almost omnipotent halo.
"I want to stop him, Xander. I do. But..."
There was nothing else Calix wished for aside from that. Still, he had to make something clear to Xander.
"But, what?" Xander lowered his voice, intrigued by what Calix had in mind, "Just tell me, Calix."
"Like how I handled the Li family before, I wanna do the same to him. A quick and clean strike. That’s enough for me."
No bloody nonsense. No prolonged bloodbath. He wanted nothing of that.
