Chapter 510: It Might Be a Plot Armor

Chapter 510: It Might Be a Plot Armor

Vernon silently assessed the bewildered look on Calix’s countenance. Perplexity was evident in his brother’s eyes. It was something the former had already expected, including...

Calix’s slightly parted lips closed, slowly curling into a smile. Tearing his eyes away from the monitor, he looked at Vernon.

"He’s the culprit."

Despite not having the concrete evidence, Calix believed nothing else.

Nicholas was the mastermind behind the accident six years ago, the one robbing the original Calix from his life.

"Indeed, he is."

A light chuckle rolled out Vernon’s lips, amused by the mirthful glint in Calix’s eyes. A sneer quickly replaced his younger brother’s initial surprise.

It was already weird enough for Nicholas to suddenly return to the country after decades of living abroad, especially when he had no one else here.

To find out he was there at the hotel on the night before the accident, the answer was crystal clear.

Nicholas Wu was the culprit.

"I found him in some other videos," said Vernon, clicking on another video file, "In two of them, he was spotted near the banquet hall. He kept talking on the phone."

Crossing both arms over his chest, Calix watched the next video. The footage showed Nicholas standing not far from the hall, his focus seemingly in the direction of the hall.

"Sadly, we couldn’t hear whatever he was talking about," Vernon shook his head, his voice hinting at slight regret, "Tho, at least we know for sure he was there that night."

Calix chuckled. Reaching one hand, he patted Vernon’s back, "Don’t worry. We’ll find more info soon."

Calix could only applaud Nicholas’ bravery. The latter didn’t bother to disguise himself, believing no one would know he was the perpetrator.

"If only we caught the attendant who brought you away from the hall," uttered Vernon, letting out a heavy sigh, "I can’t believe he’s still free."

Calix quietly listened to Vernon as the latter lamented about his failure to catch the particular attendant on duty at the banquet hall.

The attendant seemed to disappear into thin air as if he was never there. The list of staff also had no traces of him.

As a former military captain, this failure was enough to ruin Vernon’s ego.

’Well... it might be a plot armor. As if I can say that.’

Calix inwardly thought about his previous conversation with Leslie. They talked about how certain things would come across as absurd.

"Whatever happened in the past, some might have no rational explanation."

Calix agreed with Leslie after pondering over her opinion. They shouldn’t forget this world was still a fictional one despite them having a certain degree of control over it.

One thing was for sure.

This was one of the setups for Nicholas’ attempt to destroy the Xu family.

"Have you told Dad?" asked Calix after watching all the videos Vernon played on the monitor. He returned to sit on the chair.

"Not yet," Vernon shook his head. Turning the office chair around, he sat facing Calix, "How about you? Anything new from Xander?"

Calix had already informed Vernon and Andrian about his reconciliation with Xander, including hinting the latter about Nicholas.

Shrugging, Calix replied, "Nothing yet but, I think I’ll hear something soon."

Calix believed Xander wouldn’t leave a stone unturned in his pursuit of the truth regarding Nicholas.

Even though that friend of his could be quite egocentric, Xander wouldn’t let anyone harm his family. In this case, Belinda.

As for now, Belinda wasn’t in close contact with Nicholas. She was currently abroad with her mother, touring Europe.

Calix believed Xander played a role in this arrangement. Still, it wouldn’t come out as weird because Belinda’s mother often dragged her along on a whim whenever she felt like traveling abroad.

Curling his lips, Calix stated clearly, "I want this to end before our parents’ anniversary banquet. It has to."

"You sound determined," Vernon raised his brows, "Seems like you’ll make it happen no matter what."

Calix nodded, "Yes. I don’t want to prolong this."

Vernon could tell there was something else in Calix’s mind but, he didn’t intend to pry on it. His younger brother’s confidence was unshakeable, something he admired.

Vernon and Calix continued talking about Nicholas Wu, including the doubts surrounding the ambush that led to the mob boss’ death.

"There’s a huge chance they bribed the authorities to cover up the case," Vernon pointed out to which Calix quickly agreed with a nod, "I’ll look into it as well."

Calix actually hoped Xander’s male lead halo would help to hasten the conclusion of this matter. When he told Leslie that he didn’t want anything dramatic to happen before the ending, he was being truthful.

"It’s almost seven. We should go now," Calix glanced at his wristwatch, realizing they had been here for almost one hour.

Vernon shut down the monitor, agreeing with Calix.

"Let’s go. Your sister-in-law is so happy to have Leslie and Poppy here. She cooked a feast."

Lucille had finished cooking the dishes before Calix, Leslie and Calliope arrived. Everything was kept warm. She only left a pot of soup brewed on the stove. It will be ready right on time for dinner.

"Papa!"

"Daddy!"

Calliope and Amelia collectively called Calix and Vernon once they saw their fathers. The little girls were already seated at the dining table.

Leslie was also there while Lucille was still in the kitchen. The latter forbade her from helping in the kitchen, understanding Leslie’s currently weak physique.

"Having fun, aren’t you two?" Calix patted Calliope’s head before smiling at Amelia across the table, "Mia, what did you tell your cousin, en? Poppy, did you tell Mia about your new school?"

"Hehehe~ Mia say..."

"Papa, Poppy tell Mia..."

Calix and Leslie listened to Amelia’s chatting, followed by Calliope while Vernon disappeared to the kitchen. He assisted Lucille by bringing the rest of the dishes to the dining room.

Dinnertime at Vernon, Lucille and Amelia’s abode was heartwarming and fulfilling. Lucille indeed prepared a feast to welcome Leslie and Calliope’s first visit here.

"Did my brother help to prepare the ingredients?" asked Calix as he took a bite of the rice, arching his brows at Vernon.

"Of course," Lucille chuckled, throwing a look at Vernon while answering Calix, "He washed and cut all the meats and veggies. I just needed to cook."

"I can’t let my wife handle everything ah," answered Vernon smugly, "Mia and I are your sister-in-law’s capable kitchen assistants."

Leslie smilingly listened to the husband and wife’s exchange with Calix, a small smile hanging on her lips.

The brothers were just the same, most likely due to their parents’ good influence.

The two families enjoyed the scrumptious meal as they shared stories with them. Later, Vernon and Lucille invited them to take a stroll in the backyard, enjoying the cool night air.

"Have you got new dresses for Leslie and Poppy?" Vernon asked Calix, smiling teasingly, "They’ll be the stars of this banquet."

"Not yet. I’ll take them shopping later. Poppy really liked it when we took her out to get her school supplies last week."

Calix chuckled, thinking how his wife and daughter’s appearance would surely overshadow his parents’ anniversary celebration. Everyone in their family had already anticipated this.

Shrugging, Vernon threw a look at the ladies and the children. Lucille and Amelia were entertaining Leslie and Calliope at the garden pavilion.

"Let’s hope your wish comes true. About ending this all soon."

Calix said nothing. That was his earnest wish now.

Who knew...

The male lead’s halo worked in his favor soon.
