Chapter 492: Do You Measure Love by Monetary Value

To Calix’s relief, the auction ended before nine in the evening. He successfully bid for the pieces of jewelry he set his eyes on, including an ink painting.

The guests began to mill about after the auctioneer announced the conclusion of the event, followed by a speech from Mr. Chang. The latter thanked the guests for participating in this fundraising auction.

"The haircomb is so nice. I’m glad I got it."

"...the vase is for my father-in-law. His birthday is near."

"...heard the profits will go to homeless shelters this time. Then..."

The bits of the guests’ conversations drifted into the air, blending with the soothing melodies played by the speaker.

Staying in his seat, Calix remained composed. A soft but content expression was drawn on his face as he imagined how happy Leslie and Calliope would be with the new gifts.

Oh, he also didn’t forget the ink painting for his loving and naggy grandmother.

"I’ll go and retrieve your purchases."

Edward spoke once before rising to his feet, heading to where a few guests gathered for their own winning bids. Some requested to have the items transported to their residences.

As Edward stated previously, the combined bidding made by Calix didn’t even come close to the most expensive one—a set of diamond jewelry cost millions, won by Xander.

Without having the need to ask, Calix knew Xander intended to gift the diamonds to Violet. He almost chuckled when his friend won the bid as he recalled what Leslie had told him.

Indeed. The male lead pulled such an extravagant stunt during bidding as usual.

Calix didn’t bother bidding for the most expensive treasure whatsoever. He fell in love at first sight with the sapphire necklace and the child’s whimsical bracelet.

Both of them suit Leslie and Calliope well.

’Oh, they come here.’

Several guests approached Calix, one of them was Mrs. Feng. Noticing their presence, he stood up, his movements were fluid and refined.

"Calix, that sapphire necklace is truly timeless," remarked Mrs. Feng, her eyes glimmering with approval, "I’m sure your wife will be so happy."

"That necklace is indeed elegant but, why didn’t you get her that ruby one? It’s bigger and more expensive. They’ll show your love better for her."

Another woman chimed in before Calix had the chance to respond, seemingly confused with his choice. The latter part of her sentence earned uncomfortable looks from the others.

The woman, Mrs. Yu was one of the mothers who wished to pair Calix with her daughter. She often voiced her discontent about the man’s surprised marriage to her close friends.

Mrs. Yu constantly said Calix had no eyes for the best lady to be his wife. Instead of picking a good one, he chose the abandoned lady of the Li family.

Mrs. Yu’s disapproval was evident from her countenance.

Calix fully understood what Mrs. Yu meant. He heard from Harper how this madam of the Yu family expressed her dissatisfaction about his marriage.

To say that his mother was annoyed was an understatement.

Harper was truly enraged, the same as Old Madam Xu.

Both ladies held back from directly attacking Mrs. Yu. They planned to make their statement by not inviting the Yu family to the upcoming banquet this autumn.

Not allowing even a shred of irritation to show on his face, Calix replied, his eyes remaining on Mrs. Yu.

Yet, his resentment still leaked through his voice.

"The sapphire one fits my wife well. Not getting her bigger and more expensive gemstones doesn’t mean I don’t love her. Or, do you measure it by monetary value, Mrs. Yu?"

Mrs. Yu flinched, sensing the frostiness in Calix’s voice. Mrs. Feng and the others also thought the same. They nervously glanced at the former.

Without giving Mrs. Yu and anyone else to speak, Calix resumed as he calmly smoothened the lapel of his coat.

"My assistant is here. I’ll take my leave now. I can’t wait to present the gifts to my wife and daughter."

Nodding slightly, Calix left his seat, silently gesturing at Edward to follow him. His gaze met Xander’s momentarily before resuming his steps.

Calix had agreed to meet Xander but, this was not the good place for it. He exited the hall after greeting Mr. Chang, not wasting his time for other people.

Including Nicholas and Daniel. Still, Calix sensed their gazes subtly following him until he disappeared behind the doors.

The rich ambiance of the evening lingered in the air around Calix as he walked down the hallway. The chandeliers overhead cast a soft, golden glow on the polished marble floors.

Edward quietly followed Calix from behind, bringing along the purchases sealed in exquisite boxes. The echoes of glasses clinking and lively conversation faded behind the two men.

"Aren’t you meeting CEO Qin?" Edward asked quietly, his voice only audible to Calix, "Where will you meet him?"

"In the car," replied Calix calmly.

Xander’s approaching figure was reflected on the mirror near the elevators. As Calix waited for the doors to slide open, the former eventually reached him.

Edward took a step back, not wanting to associate himself with the two friends’ fight that most likely would happen. Holding the boxes tightly, his eyes darted from his boss to the latter’s friend.

Edward knew how much Calix was infuriated with Xander over the latter’s accusation toward Leslie over two months ago.

Uh-oh, what if he got caught in the crossfire if they really fought?

Calix threw a glance at the man in the black suit. Xander hadn’t said anything from the moment he stood there.

Arching his brows, Calix asked, his voice laden with mockery.

"You look awful. Couldn’t sleep well these days? Haunted by something? By your guilt, perhaps? Ah! Sorry. I forgot you never have any."

Xander grimaced as every word spoken by Calix hit the sore spots. Even though his friend didn’t raise his voice, he knew Calix was still thoroughly mad at him.

"W-well... something like that."

Calix blinked, thinking he heard Xander wrong.

"What did you say? Care to be clearer?"

Xander coughed, looking a little awkward. Stiffly turning to look at Calix, he murmured, "...about feeling guilty. I do feel that."

"What?!"

Calix yelled, his eyes widening in shock.

That arrogant and unyielding Xander Qin felt guilty?

Did someone’s soul take over his body too?!
