Chapter 491: Cringey But, Can Still Be Heart Fluttering

"We shouldn’t bother you much longer. We’ll head to our seats.. I’m just glad to meet you here, CEO Xu."

Daniel chimed in after Calix and Nicholas retracted their hands. Belinda said nothing, still seemingly nervous to be around Calix after their previous meeting at the hotel[01].

"Perhaps we will cross paths again," Calix nodded once at Daniel, thinking how smart he was for not overstaying his welcome, "I’d love to talk more to you and your partner, Mr. Yan."

Edward remained quiet as he observed the three men’s interaction. Like Calix, he didn’t let his disgust toward Daniel and Nicholas be evident on his face.

"It’ll be our pleasure to meet you again, CEO Xu. I’ve heard of the countless achievements you led," Nicholas spoke, still wearing the polite smile on his face, "May you enjoy the auction, CEO Xu."

Calix drifted his gaze to Nicholas, feeling funny as he heard the praise sung by the latter for him. With an indiscernible glint of mockery in his eyes, Calix simply said, "Likewise, Mr. Wu."

Nicholas deepened his smile. Nodding once, he took a step back before walking away. Daniel and Belinda also did the same. They returned to their seats in the third row.

Calix and Edward glanced at the trio before returning their focus to the stage. They saw the auctioneer talking to the attendants before getting up the stage.

"I thought of a more dramatic meeting, Boss Xu," whispered Edward without looking at Calix. His voice was so low, faintly audible to the man beside him.

"Thank goodness, it didn’t," Calix opened the booklet again, seeing the two items he wished to get for Leslie and Calliope, "They most likely tried to approach me normally first."

Edward just let out a low hum. Turning his head toward Calix, he saw how engrossed his boss was with the booklet.

"Found anything you’re interested in?"

This was not the first time Edward accompanied Calix to an auction. His boss rarely had any interest in the items listed. He only attended the events for the sake of formalities.

Knowing he shouldn’t leave with nothing, Calix often got some antique paintings or vases. All of them were given to Old Madam Xu instead of building his own collections.

"These will suit my wife and daughter," Calix pointed to two items. A hint of joy was imbued in his voice, "Subtle, perfect for everyday wear."

Edward opened his own booklet, finding which items caught Calix’s attention. Nodding twice, he let out a hum of approval.

One of them was a dainty sapphire necklace while the other was a whimsical bracelet, clearly for a child. Both appearances suit daily wear.

"But, the price combined won’t even make the highest bid. I just imagined watching you bid for the most extravagant jewelry ah."

Calix clicked his tongue, knowing that Edward was influenced by the dramas on TV, the same as Leslie. She had teased him once about it yesterday.

"Honey, do you know? In some dramas, the male leads will flaunt how wealthy they are by bidding for the most expensive and glorious jewelry."

Speechless by Leslie’s words, Calix asked her.

"Isn’t that scene corny?"

Leslie nodded a few times with a funny smile on her lips. It was so evident that she was teasing him.

"It’s cringey but, still can be heart fluttering ah. That’s why such scenes are popular! Don’t you think so, honey?"

Calix shook his head in helplessness. He shuddered as he remembered Xander used to do such a thing a few times even before he started dating Violet.

But, recalling that Xander was the original male lead of this world, Calix thought it was a given. Most likely the former would pull up such a stunt again tonight.

Speaking of Xander...

A frown marred Calix’s forehead before he turned to look to his right side. His gaze landed on Xander’s side profile before their eyes collided when the former also stared at him.

Calix noticed Xander’s appearance when Nicholas, Daniel and Belinda talked to him earlier. The man came with his personal assistant, like how he was accompanied by Edward.

Xander seemed... a little dispirited. Most people couldn’t see it but, Calix did. It was something that rarely happened to the former because of how unyielding he usually was.

Was it because of him? And also Violet?

Calix didn’t know. Even though he cared for Xander like a brother, sometimes he doubted the latter treat him the same.

Thus, it was a little surprising to think Xander was affected by the strains of relationships with him and also Violet.

’It’s pitiful but, we can’t change people who won’t change themselves.’

Calix quietly stared at Xander, not intending to exchange words yet. He gave his friend a slight nod, acknowledging his presence before returning his eyes to the booklet.

The auction might end before nine. Calix had no intention to join the after-party. He would quickly greet Mr. and Mrs. Chang who he hadn’t met before heading home straightaway.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen."

The auctioneer finally called for attention by the guests in the hall. Dressed in a tailored suit that spoke of his style and professionalism, he continued speaking through the microphone.

Calix absent-mindedly listened to the auctioneer introducing himself and emphasizing that the guests would have a wonderful selection of rare and exquisite pieces for the auction.

Bzzz.

Sensing the phone vibrating in his breast pocket, Calix quietly slipped it out, leaning his phone on his lap. He arched his brows once he saw the sender’s name.

It was Xander.

Without looking at the man, Calix tapped on the unread message. He was reading the original text before a second one quickly followed.

[Xander: Let’s meet after the auction]

[Xander: Please, Calix]

’Please?’

How rare to hear such a word from the stubborn man.

Calix replied after a moment of pondering.

[Calix: Only if you make it short]

Returning his gaze to the stage, Calix didn’t read the response from Xander. The auctioneer’s clear voice echoed in the hall.

"...our first item tonight is a remarkable necklace. A true masterpiece of vintage design from the 18th century. Crafted from brilliant emeralds and diamonds! The bidding starts at..."
