Chapter 488: The Changes in the Wang Family

Leslie invited Mrs. Wang and Alfred inside, leading them to the lounge. Their footsteps echoed audibly on the marble floor.

Calliope followed Leslie closely. Her round eyes, brimming with curiosity, kept sneaking at the guests she had never met before.

Her mama said they were good people ah.

She had to show her best behavior!

Along the way, Leslie and Mrs. Wang talked about Calliope. The little dumpling caught the older lady’s interest.

"We’ll enroll her in a kindergarten once summer break’s over. We’ve been a bit busy lately but, my husband said we should bring her to the kindergarten before school starts."

Leslie and Calix hadn’t forgotten Calliope’s wish to attend kindergarten. After weighing every choice, they finally settled on one. The commute time was less than ten minutes by car.

"Calliope will surely make many new friends. It’ll be exciting for her."

Leslie chuckled, agreeing with Mrs. Wang.

"Hehe, we hope so. Our Calliope will be bored if she only stays at home. Attending a kindergarten is a good choice."

Arriving at the lounge, Leslie gestured at the couches in the seating area, her lips smiling warmly at Mrs. Wang and Alfred. She saw the hint of awkwardness they tried to hide.

"Aunt Sofia, Alfred, please make yourself comfortable. Don’t we have a lot to chat about?"

"Y-yes... Thank you, Charlene."

Mrs. Wang nodded with an awkward smile, followed by Alfred. The mother and son sat on the two-seater couch. The plush cushion sank under their weight.

Mrs. Wang and Alfred exchanged a glance, understanding each other’s thoughts. Since yesterday, they had been treated like royalty by Calix’s men.

Riding a luxury vehicle, staying in a five-star hotel suite, and being served feasts crafted by the finest chefs. Such things never happened in their entire life.

The spacious lounge was elegantly decorated with plush and comfortable furniture, setting a refined yet cozy atmosphere. The sunlight filtered through the tall windows, draped with luxurious curtains.

Beyond the luxury, the mother and son saw traces of a warm family home here—calming and inviting.

Leslie and Calliope sank on the three-seater couch opposite Mrs. Wang and Alfred. They caught the familiar sound of Aunt Wendy’s footsteps, most likely the housekeeper brought drinks and snacks already.

True enough, Aunt Wendy appeared with a three-tiered food trolley, full of yummies. She bowed at Leslie before doing the same to Mrs. Wang and Alfred.

"Aunt Wendy," Leslie smiled at the housekeeper, gesturing at the stiff Mrs. Wang and Alfred, "Let me introduce you to them."

Mrs. Wang and Aunt Wendy greeted each other, including Alfred.

"I’m a housekeeper here. Mrs. Charlene said she’ll have honored guests coming to visit her today. I hope you’ll enjoy our hospitality. Oh, please have lunch here too."

Aunt Wendy told Mrs. Wang and Alfred after serving the food and drinks on the coffee table. Under Leslie’s prior request, she changed how she addressed the young lady.

"Thank you. We actually didn’t expect much," Mrs. Wang chuckled, looking more comfortable as tension dissipated from her nerves, "The pastries look great. They’ll surely taste good."

"Aunt Wendy is great at cooking and baking. You can’t skip lunch later, Aunt Sofia. Alfred too."

Leslie chimed in, happy to see Mrs. Wang being more relaxed. Only Alfred seemed a little more sheepish yet, remained polite.

"Thank you again. My son and I will enjoy the meals."

Aunt Wendy left after promising to prepare the best dishes for lunch later. Leslie shifted her gaze from the former’s disappearing gaze to Mrs. Wang.

"How have you been, Aunt Sofia? The rest of your family too," asked Leslie, her mellow voice carrying the hint of curiosity and concern.

Despite exchanging calls a few times already, Leslie still wished to hear about Mrs. Wang and her family. At the very least, she heard their life improved further due to Calix’s stepping in.

"Better than ever, Charlene. Your husband, Mr. Xu helped us enough that we won’t be starved even for generations. We’re so indebted to you."

Mrs. Wang smiled in helplessness as she recalled the rewards—as per Calix’s saying—gifted to her and her entire family. All because she assisted Charlene when she was in need and still cared for her.

A brand-new house on a spacious land under her name, monetary gifts and also other benefits. Mrs. Wang knew she no longer needed to break her back working so hard.

Leslie waved one hand, smiling at Mrs. Wang, "That’s not true, Mrs. Wang. If not for you, I might not be here and even met my child again. You deserve it all."

A kindhearted and humble lady like Mrs. Wang most likely felt overwhelmed by the shower of gifts granted by Calix. Still, Leslie knew the older lady deserved nothing less.

"I promise not to let the money blind me," Mrs. Wang smiled in helplessness. Glancing at Alfred, she told Leslie, "My children think the same. Mr. Xu’s assistant helps us to find a good financial advisor."

Leslie was glad with the way Mrs. Wang and her children think. They didn’t gamble the newly acquired wealth away instead, they seized this chance to solidify and let it grow for future generations.

"How about you then, Charlene?" Mrs. Wang shifted the question to Leslie, worry evident in her eyes, "Does it still hurt? When you’re trying to walk and... do anything in your daily life?"

Mrs. Wang was in a tough spot for months, being concerned for Charlene when suddenly their contact ceased. She was surprised when the public library where the lady used to work said Charlene was involved in an accident.

Mrs. Wang could only pray for Charlene’s safety and recovery. She considered going to the Li family home but, held herself back.

Old Madam Li’s cruelness toward Charlene was still fresh in Mrs. Wang’s mind. The former didn’t even care when her granddaughter almost took her own life.

Thus, she didn’t want to bring danger to the lady.

What if her family learned of her plan to run away someday?

Wouldn’t worse consequences come to her?

Seeing the evident concern on Mrs. Wang’s face, Leslie smilingly reassured her, "I recover faster than expected, Aunt Sofia. It still hurts sometimes but, not so much anymore."

Mrs. Wang nodded once. She fidgeted with the hem of her shirt as tears pricked her eyes. Waves of joy and sadness still crashed onto the shore of her heart, causing her emotions to whirlwind.

Charlene looked better, happier than the last time Mrs. Wang met the lady. She believed the former’s life indeed had turned for the better.

"Really... it’s good to know you’re doing better now, Charlene. I’m so happy for you."

"Aunt Sofia..."

Leslie felt a part of her heart was touched by the sincerity on Mrs. Wang’s countenance.

Yes. She was indeed the mother Charlene yearned to have.

Mrs. Wang let out some chuckles. The expression on her face softening, she asked, "Your husband treats you well, en? You’re also happy with your child, isn’t it?"

Leslie turned to look at Calliope whose round eyes sparkling at her. Lifting one hand, she rubbed her daughter’s head, earning a cute grin from the little one.

"I’m happy with my family. They’re my life."
