Chapter 485: Your Happiness Is the Most Important Thing
"I won’t pry anymore."
"...huh?"
Calix was taken aback when Ryken suddenly threw those words at him. Blinking, he stared at his friend, wondering if his ears played a trick on him.
Didn’t Ryken seem adamant about digging the truth out of him? Calix had already prepared himself not to waver under his friend’s possible interrogation.
"I’m still doubtful," admitted Ryken, feeling there was no need to conceal his thoughts, "But, that’s not necessary. You look happy, genuinely. That’s the most important thing."
Ryken kept his suspicions to himself because pushing his view on Calix would bring more harm than good. He also witnessed something interesting today.
From the first moment that Ryken saw Calix and Leslie outside his door, he had been watching his friend and the lady’s interaction subtly yet closely.
The husband and wife’s body language mirrored one another. Calix cared for Leslie and she returned the same feelings to him.
They seemed to move in sync, a gentle rhythm that was only natural because they were one.
The pair of lovers often had an attentive gaze on each other, including how their eyes softened and their expressions glimmered just by looking at one another.
"I haven’t seen you this happy since you dumped Aria," Ryken continued. Without mincing his words, he brought up his friend’s history with the heiress, "That’s good enough for me."
Ryken still remembered when Calix found out how Aria cheated on him with two different blokes. For the very first time, he saw the man’s confidence and composure shattered into pieces.
In the beginning, Ryken initially thought Calix’s broken heart was beyond salvageable. His friend put his whole focus on work to the point of driving himself to sheer exhaustion.
Calix took almost a year before a semblance of his cheerful self returned. Ryken was hopeful about his friend moving completely away from the betrayal Aria caused.
And... Ryken also wished Calix wouldn’t give up on finding love because of the treachery he endured before.
’Maybe they crossed paths around that time.’
Curling up his lips into a smile, Ryken finally decided to take Calix’s words at face value. There was no use in complicating matters.
His friend was earnestly happy living his new life as a husband and father. He should do his part as a friend by supporting him.
’...that’s it? Just because I look happy?’
Unable to say anything, Calix simply nodded at Ryken. His heart struck with ache upon thinking that the Calix the crimson-haired man was worried about was not him.
Ryken was indeed a good friend despite not being here physically much.
Calix curved his lips. A small part of his heart tingled with happiness. He believed Ryken was one of the few people, outside his family who really cared for him.
"Thank you, Ryken. As you know, I was separated from my wife and daughter for years until we met again. Their happiness is my priority."
Ryken arched his brows, sensing a slight biting to Calix’s voice. When the latter spoke again, he ended up hearing more edge.
"I don’t care what people say about me but, I won’t tolerate anyone belittling my wife and our child."
Blinking, Ryken narrowed his eyes before a smirk was drawn on his lips. As usual, he spoke directly.
"Like how Xander did before? I heard of what happened between you guys from Davin."
Calix let out a helpless sigh, not surprised to hear Ryken bringing up Xander’s name. He had already anticipated this from his friend.
"He has gone too far. I won’t back away and apologize. In fact, there’s nothing I should apologize from him."
Calix’s voice was calm yet, still carrying a hint of firmness. He didn’t simply say this thing to scare anyone. He was being truthful with it.
Ryken nodded in response, showing that he shared the same view as the former. Reaching for another chess piece, words flowed out of his mouth.
"Xander indeed has crossed the lines, more than usual. I’m shocked that you didn’t give him a punch or two."
Calix scoffed, amused by Ryken’s remark. Shrugging, he admitted, "My hands itched for that but, my wife would disagree with me. She dislikes violence."
"Tsk," Ryken openly clicked his tongue, pretending to be disgusted with Calix, "Don’t rub your love life on me ah. I know you have a wife and a child already. No need to show off."
Rolling his eyes, Calix threw a chess piece to Ryken, "Go and get yourself a girlfriend instead of being jealous of me."
Ryken gritted his teeth, knowing Calix deliberately trying to make his blood boil. He quickly racked his mind, weighing between going on the blind dates or not.
He wanted to show off his love life too!
In an hour, the family of three and Ryken sat in the living room. The crimson-haired man proudly presented the desserts he learned from the locals during his travel.
"Uncle Ryken, do you have more? Poppy wanna bring some home ah."
The little dumpling was charmed by luk chup, a type of colorful dessert derived from marzipan. The tiny and sweet desserts in the shapes of flowers, fruits and vegetables captured her tummy and heart.
Ryken laughed out loud, happy to see the clear anticipation and fondness toward the dessert on the little Calliope’s face.
"Of course! You can take everything!"
"Really? Yay!"
Amused by the scene, Leslie leaned closer to Calix before whispering, "Seems like you need to be a sweet dictator ah. Lest our daughter’s teeth will rot sooner."
"Seems like it," Calix chuckled in helplessness, not expecting how well Calliope and Ryken to get along, "She has eaten too many sweets these days."
Calix was telling the truth. Including the candies and chocolate Calliope received from Amelia the other weekend, their daughter indeed feasted on sweets much more than usual.
Leslie refrained from laughing. Reaching for Calix’s hand, she asked, her voice a soft murmur by his side, "Are you happy today, honey?"
Calix enveloped Leslie’s hand in his, feeling the coarseness of his palm graze her soft skin. Nodding, he smiled ever so softly, "I am, sweetheart."
None of them realized their little yet sweet exchange was witnessed by the crimson-haired man.
