Chapter 47: The Biased Old Madam Li

More memories flowed into Leslie’s mind the first time she saw Geoffrey and his family. All of them were unpleasant but, she didn’t groan in pain like before.

’Thank goodness. I’m not in the mood to deal with another headache.’

What Leslie could say was... the torment Charlene was forced to receive during the time she lived here was more terrible than the former’s expectation.

’Poor girl... Your life was just the same as mine even though you lived in wealth.’

Exhaling a soft sigh, Leslie returned her focus to reality. She quietly walked one step behind Calix as the young man was escorted inside by Rowan. The others also followed the two men.

Leslie glanced at Gladys whose expression was a mix of shame and silent fury. Obviously, the latter was mad because Calix dared to reject her in front of the entire Li family.

Gladys was an arrogant woman. Through Charlene’s memories, Leslie could tell men flocked to her like how bees swarming to flowers.

Leslie’s lips curled up into a smirk. She didn’t feel sorry for Gladys at all.

’So shameless. How could you live like that?’

Leslie inwardly shook her head in disbelief. Her eyes drifted to Geoffrey and Deena.

It was obvious what Deena was trying to do earlier. The middle-aged woman wanted to pair Gladys with Calix despite knowing the man was her cousin’s husband.

Gladys seemed willing to follow along with her mother’s plan. As one of the roses of high society, she had always eyed Xander and Calix as her potential life partner candidates.

Xander was so hard to approach, unlike Calix. Yet, it didn’t mean one could easily entice the latter.

Both men, including Davin and another one of their friends, put a huge distance between them and others, especially women. None of the young ladies were successful in getting closer to them.

’Tsk, tsk. You’re young and rich. Instead of chasing after a married man, you better try gaining as many little fresh meat as you like.’

Leslie silently mocked Gladys’ stupidity. Even though the latter’s personality was shaped by the author, she couldn’t treat any of them as mere characters inside a book anymore.

To Leslie, all of them felt so alive.

"Here we are."

Rowan’s voice shifted Leslie’s focus from Gladys to him. They had arrived at the drawing room where Old Madam Li was waiting for Calix.

Started by Rowan and Calix, all of them entered the room. Leslie followed suit. Her eyes wandered around the drawing room before they were locked in a direction.

An old woman in her mid-70s was sitting on a bamboo couch in the middle of the drawing room.

She wore a black-colored long-sleeved qipao. Her gray hair was bundled up neatly into a bun, adorned with two gold hair sticks. Her cold expression was so unkind.

Leslie shuddered at the sight of the old lady. Her feet froze in the middle of her track.

This was Norah Chen, the matriarch of the Li family. She hailed from the Chen family in the north. She was also the same woman who ostracized her eldest son by blatantly favoring her second one.

’This woman... I have a bad feeling about her.’

More distasteful memories pierced into Leslie’s mind. She could clearly recall how Old Madam Li always talked to or treated her eldest granddaughter as if she worthed nothing.

Holding back from sighing out loud, Leslie pushed herself to focus on what was going on now.

Calix was greeting Old Madam Li. He was still standing. Smiling, he formally introduced himself to her.

"Good evening, Grandmother-in-law. I’m Calix Xu, Charlene’s husband. I’m sorry for only coming today to greet you."

Old Madam Li’s sharp gaze looked at Calix from head to toe. Her lips formed a smile yet, it didn’t reach her eyes.

"When we met at several events before, I didn’t think you’d be my grandson-in-law," Old Madam Li’s words were tinged with slight mockery, "This is such an honor to our Li family. But, I didn’t expect that you’d fancy my eldest granddaughter."

Calix paid ignorance to Old Madam Li’s ridicule.

"She rarely appeared in events but, the first time I met her, she caught my interest. I know I rushed this marriage but, I hope to take care of her properly when she’s still unconscious."

Calix softened his tone, assuming the look of someone who was deeply infatuated with his newlywed wife. Leslie who watched his acting almost burst out laughing.

Old Madam Li’s expression tensed. Her eyes shifted from Calix to her family members.

"All of you, sit down," Old Madam Li smiled slightly. She gestured at Calix to the two-seater couch, "Calix, you may sit there. Gladys, you too. You always sit there."

Leslie blinked, thinking how stupid Old Madam Li’s action was.

Did she think Calix would follow her words just because she was an elder?

Geoffrey and Deena looked at each other. Their worried countenances eased as they assumed Calix wouldn’t disrespect his new elder’s remarks.

"Grandma, that..."

Gladys glanced at Calix whose expression didn’t change even the tiniest bit. Forgetting her initial shame, she smiled at her beloved grandmother.

"Okay, Grandma."

Old Madam Li returned the smile. Her sharp gaze softened, "My Gladys is always so polite. Hurry, help your..."

Calix cut through the rest of Old Madam Li’s sentence.

"Grandmother-in-law, it’s inappropriate for me to sit with my wife’s female cousin."

Old Madam Liu flinched. Gladys’ face reddened in shame. Geoffrey and Deena immediately recalled how Calix rejected the same kind of offer earlier.

Rowan, Bianca and Irene said nothing. They silently enjoyed watching the show from the sidelines.

"T-that... don’t be so rigid, Calix," Old Madam Li quickly controlled her expression, "Gladys and Charlene are like good sisters. You can treat her like your own sibling too."

Leslie almost scoffed.

Old Madam Li lied with her eyes open!

Since when did Gladys and Charlene have a good sisterly bond? The former had always bullied her. She treated her eldest cousin like a servant.

Calix was aware that he made the situation uncomfortable but, he was unfazed by it. He silently enjoyed the exasperated looks on the matriarch and her beloved granddaughter.

"It’s fine, Grandmother-in-law," Calix was still smiling but, he was firm with his decision. He looked at Rowan, "I’ll sit with my father-in-law. We bonded well last night during our first dinner."

Rowan covered his mouth. He pretended to cough, masking his laughter. Bianca and Irene held back from giggling.

For the first time, they watched Old Madam Li and Geoffrey’s family being mocked in disguise by someone.
