Chapter 46: Visiting His Wife’s Maiden Home

Chapter 46: Visiting His Wife’s Maiden Home

At a quarter before six, Calix and Leslie headed out of the CEO’s office. Their destination was Jadeite Peak where the Li family’s ancestral home was.

All of the gifts had been loaded into the car by Edward. Once again Leslie was amazed by the number of gifts Calix got. She shuddered as she imagined how much all of them cost.

Once they got inside the car, Calix contacted Rowan. They had a short conversation on the phone.

"Father said he’ll be waiting for us. I mean, me," Calix put down the phone. He buckled the seatbelt while looking at Leslie, "How is it? Did I sound like a good son-in-law?"

Leslie smiled faintly, a subtle awkwardness flickering in her eyes. Instead of answering Calix, she came up with a question of her own.

"Are you going to address my parents like that now? Father and Mother?"

Leslie couldn’t get used to the idea yet. Rowan and Bianca were her parents now because she almost—soon—would occupy their real daughter’s body.

"Why?" Calix shot his brows up. His mind was struck with an idea, "Ah, should I call them Father-in-law and Mother-in-law?"

No matter how their marriage started, Rowan and Bianca were his parents-in-law now. He needed to show them some respect.

"That’s not what I mean..." Leslie trailed off. Unable to form better words, she sighed before saying, "It’s okay. Just call them what you’re comfortable with."

Calix shrugged. He couldn’t comprehend what Leslie was trying to say. They simply dropped the subject there.

While Calix was focused on driving, Leslie called Mimo telepathically. She quietly fiddled with the fabric of her skirt.

’Mimo, I’m going there now. To Charlene’s family home.’

Like before, Mimo instantly answered Leslie. Its childlike voice had a subtle hint of concern.

|Be careful, Leslie. You’ll get more memories once you meet the others there. But... most of them might be bad memories.|

Mimo’s worry was plausible considering how Charlene was not favored by her family. Even the helpers didn’t treat her well. She surely had more sorrowful memories than the happy ones.

’When Calix’s dining with them, I’ll try looking around the house. I’ll start from her room, I think.’

Leslie was convinced she could touch everything inside the Li family’s ancestral home as long as Calix was there. Going through Charlene’s bedroom should be a good start.

The simple experiment Leslie did at Xu International this morning helped her understand the extent of her ability as a soul.

"Are you nervous?"

"...huh?"

Calix’s sudden question pierced through Leslie’s mind. She abruptly ended her conversation with Mimo. With a slight tilt of her chin, she glanced at his side profile.

"Going back to your family home, I mean. I’m sorry if I sound rude but, you’re not on good terms with your family, en?"

Calix also looked at Leslie albeit briefly. His calm expression had a subtle hint of concern. The same worry laced in his tone.

Leslie blinked, feeling a bit uncomfortable with Calix’s inquiry. After a moment of hesitation, she nodded. Her lips curved into a faint smile.

"You heard what my father told you last night," said Leslie, referring to the time Calix and Rowan had a private chat, "My grandmother... she favors my Second Uncle and his family more."

Calix frowned, recalling the information Edward gathered about Leslie and the Li family. Despite already knowing that, hearing it directly made him feel sorry for her.

"We won’t stay for long over there," said Calix. He dropped his initial intention of asking Leslie more about her relationship with the Li family, "I’ll just have dinner and chat for a bit with them. Then, we’re going home."

Home. To Graceville Manor.

Understanding what Calix meant by that, Leslie’s smile softened. She nodded once.

He didn’t want her to feel uncomfortable remaining at the Li family’s ancestral home. That was why he promised to quickly leave after achieving his goal of meeting her maiden family.

’Ah... I feel bad for her.’

All of a sudden, Leslie recalled Charlene.

If Charlene didn’t choose to leave, Leslie had a hunch that the former’s new life as Calix’s wife would be a good one. It was a marriage of convenience but, he wouldn’t mistreat her at all.

But, there was no turning back.

Leslie could only pray for Charlene’s happiness during her journey. She hoped that the latter would be surrounded by people who loved her in her next life.

Calix and Leslie arrived at the Jadeite Peak before six-thirty. Like Phoenix Heights, a few other wealthy families resided there for more than three generations.

The sun was slowly descending below the horizon. The sky was splashed with dazzling tints of amber and gold, followed by streaks of violet.

The vivid colors glimmered on the blooming spring flowers. They gently swayed as the cool breeze passed by.

The security guards at the main gate of the community allowed Calix in. They also informed the Li family’s guard post of his arrival.

Soon, Calix drove his car past the entrance of the Li family’s ancestral home. The scene he saw next made him laugh.

"I didn’t expect them to wait for me outside," Calix chuckled, his tone devoid of joy, "Look, Leslie."

Following Calix’s words, Leslie focused on the front yard of the ancestral home. A few people standing under the main porch, including Rowan, Bianca and Irene.

They were...

"...my Second Uncle and his family."

Calix said nothing. He slowed down before parking under the extended roof of the porch.

Geoffrey, his wife Deena Tang and his daughter Gladys shared the same happy expression. His son Derek looked unfazed while Rowan, Bianca and Irene appeared uneasy.

Geoffrey and his family stood in the center together with the family butler. Rowan and his family were pushed to the other side.

"CEO Xu, welcome to our home," Geoffrey stepped forward once Calix got out of the car, "We’re so happy to have you here."

Calix smiled faintly at Geoffrey. Ignoring the man’s attempt to shake hands with him, he turned around to face Rowan, Bianca and Irene.

"Good evening, Father and Mother. Irene too," Calix greeted them with a wide smile, "I’m sorry. Did you wait long? I was stuck in the traffic jam."

Rowan was stunned and so did Bianca. Irene smiled, covered by her palms.

Behind Calix, Geoffrey’s face flushed in embarrassment. Deena and Gladys’ expressions also sank.

"N-not at all, Calix," Rowan quickly got over his initial stutter. His face brightened, "Come inside. The chef’s still preparing food for you."

"Yes, my elder brother is right," Geoffrey approached the men. He deliberately stood in between Calix and Rowan, "Our mother is waiting for you in the drawing room. CEO Xu, we should go there first."

Calix nodded. While keeping a professional smile, he said, "I’ve brought gifts here. All for my new in-laws. They’re in the backseat."

"Thank you for your generosity, CEO Xu. Our helpers will get them," Deena chimed in. She pushed the smiling Gladys toward Calix, "Let our daughter lead you to her grandmother. She’ll..."

"Aren’t we going in the same direction?" Calix calmly cut the rest of Deena’s remarks, "My father-in-law can bring me to my grandmother-in-law. Isn’t that right, Father?"

Calix’s words were greeted with an awkward silence. Deena and Gladys froze on the spot, their cheeks reddening in shame.

"...yes," Rowan nodded. His smile turned more cheery, "Calix, come. Your grandmother-in-law wants to talk to you before dinner."

"Sure, Father."

Without sparing another glance at Geoffrey and his family, Calix followed Rowan by his side. He sneaked a wink at Leslie who watched the entire scene in amusement.
