Chapter 458: What Did You Find Out?

Neither Calix nor Leslie mentioned about the former’s intention to help Irene financially to the high school girl. They decided to tell the teenager much later.

Leslie and Calix stayed in the lounge with Irene and Calliope. The little dumpling was so eager for her little aunt’s presence tonight that she kind of put her parents’ existence to the back of her mind.

Irene entertained Calliope by playing with the wooden horse cart she bought for the little one in Sicily. The little dumpling placed the crochet fox toy Mimo and the crochet strawberry Calix made for her on both sides of the cart.

Soon, the clock reached nine, slightly later than Calliope’s usual bedtime.

"Poppy, time to sleep," Calix clapped his hands once, trying to get Calliope’s attention, "You can play with your aunt tomorrow morning ah."

Blinking, Calliope looked from Calix to Irene. Her little mind seemed to process something before she asked Irene, her voice laden with hope.

"Poppy sleep with Little Aunt Irene, okay? Please~"

Irene laughed at the sight of the adorable Calliope trying to get her to agree. Leslie and Calix exchanged a look, fond smiles carving on their lips.

"Okay. Your aunt here is honored to sleep on your pretty bed ah."

"Yay!"

Holding the horse cart with both hands, Calliope followed Irene upstairs. The little girl and the teenager chatted along the way to the staircase.

"Should we go now too?" Calix raised one brow, flashing a lazy smile at Leslie.

"Let’s."

Rising to his feet, Calix supported Leslie. His wife spent more chances walking with the assistance of a cane than using a wheelchair as of late.

Leslie’s steps were considerably slower than everyone else but, Calix was extremely grateful and proud of her recent progress. At this rate, she would fully recover by autumn.

"Have anything interesting happened at work today, en?" Leslie tilted her chin up, staring at Calix with a knowing look, "You usually have many things to share ah."

Leslie’s remarks lured laughter out of Calix’s mouth. Keeping one hand secured around her shoulders, he followed her slow walking pace.

"Well, my team found something interesting about him."

Leslie unconsciously halted her steps. Blinking her eyelids rapidly, her gaze on the smiling Calix was veiled with haze.

"...him?" Leslie’s voice was barely a whisper. She tightened her grasp on the cane handle, "...what did you find?"

Leslie was aware that Calix’s security team was investigating Nicholas Wu more deeply. Her husband often brought up the recent findings but, nothing much came out yet.

"Let’s talk in our room, okay? I’ll tell you everything, sweetheart."

Calix gently squeezed Leslie’s right shoulder, understanding his wife was a little shaken upon hearing about Nicholas. He needed to calm her nerves because the recent findings were quite shocking, to say the least.

"...okay."

Despite being nervous and impatient, Leslie didn’t ask Calix to carry her to the bedroom just so they could talk about it as soon as possible.

’Calm down, Leslie. Calm down.’

Leslie persuaded herself to use this time to soothe her tensed nerves. She was grateful for Calix’s ever steady presence by her side.

With his arm around her shoulders and the warmth exuded by his body cocooning her—her anxiousness gradually depleted.

Calix and Leslie finally reached their shared bedroom. They didn’t forget to drop by Calliope’s chamber to see the little one.

Irene had already tucked Calliope in the bed. Leslie and Calix wished the child and the teenager good night before resuming their journey.

"...what did you find about him?" asked Leslie as she lowered herself to the bed’s edge. Her eyes, lingering with faint worries, remained on Calix’s face.

"It turned out, he has approached me in the past."

Calix’s words almost knocked the breath out of Leslie. Her eyes followed him as he occupied the place next to her, their hands linking together.

"Do you remember our trip to Rome?" Calix began, his voice low, "I met someone briefly during my business partner’s banquet. That person is related to him."

Leslie took in everything Calix had just told her. Despite being uneasy, she simply nodded at him, urging him to continue.

Calix recounted his first meeting with Mr. Yan, including when the man mentioned founding a company with his long-time friend.

"I bumped into him again when I returned from Zurich. Then..."

Leslie was entirely quiet throughout the time Calix told her about Nicholas Wu and his friend called Mr. Yan. Her expression kept changing from being worried, resentful and saddened.

"Their connection isn’t the only thing we found out today," Calix took a pause, giving Leslie time to recompose herself before dropping the bomb. Parting his lips, he uttered, "They used to be in a gang."

"...what? A gang?"

"Yes. A mob."

Sensing Leslie’s agitation, Calix squeezed her hands, hoping to channel some of his strength to her. Even though he didn’t want to see her getting more anxious, he never wished to hide anything from her.

"Their mob might seem like a small neighborhood gang but, they were quite notorious. And... the two men were infamous among their rivals and enemies alike."

The information about Nicholas and Mr. Yan’s time in the gang was still limited. The two men seemed to do everything they could to cover the dark parts of their histories.

"The gang was disbanded five years ago. For what reason, we don’t know yet. They founded their company shortly after that."

Calix ended the story with uncertainty about Nicholas and Mr. Yan’s past. Leslie was frustrated out of her anxiousness but, she understood this was better than nothing.

Taking some time to register everything in her mind, Leslie embraced Calix, nestling her forehead on his chest. The steady beating of his heart echoed, traveling to her ears.

"Calix... please stay safe... I know we’re one step ahead of them now, but... please, be careful."

Calix quietly returned Leslie’s embrace, pulling her even closer to him. Running his fingers through her hair, he hoped she could put her heart at ease.

"I will be safe, Leslie. We will go through this. Once we’re done, we’ll only focus on our family, okay?"

Leslie simply nodded, her throat was clogged by the sobs she tried to hold back.

Yes. They would do that.
