Chapter 400: Wondering How His Daughter’s Mind Work

Unfastening the last button of the red shirt, Calix let the fabric slide down from his broad shoulders before throwing it into the laundry bin. He stood opposite one of the wardrobe closets, choosing the pajamas.

Ring! Ring!

Calix glanced in the direction of the ringing. His eyes settled on his work phone lying on the vanity table. Without taking any of the pajamas, he leisurely walked to accept the call.

Mr. Wei’s name was displayed on the screen.

"Hello."

Leaning his hip against the vanity table, Calix answered the attorney’s call. His eyes drifted to the wall clock of the walk-in wardrobe. The time was closely approaching nine-thirty in the evening.

Maybe, Calliope had already brought her storybooks and toys to Leslie’s bedroom. He better hurry to them.

"Good evening, Second Young Master. I’ve completed the tasks for tonight."

Mr. Wei’s steady voice echoed from the end of the line. Calix hummed softly but, he asked nothing. The attorney continued talking about the situation with the Li family.

"If they try bothering Second Young Madam, they’ll have a lot to answer in court. We will press charges regarding the child abandonment six years ago. Of course, we haven’t included their fraudulent activities yet."

Calliope was one of the Xu family’s children for the new generation. Even though the Li family could claim they knew nothing about the little one’s blood relationship with the Xu family, they still committed the heinous crime of child abandonment.

At the same time, Leslie could report them for mistreating her during her pregnancy period if she wanted to. For now, she said she wasn’t interested in dealing with the Li family.

"Chairman Xu instructed me to report them to the bureau after tonight’s event. We can expect a good show this Monday."

The Li family better focus on getting out of trouble with the authorities instead of hounding Calix and Leslie.

"That’s enough for now. Keep me updated, Mr. Wei."

The attorney knew Calix would be away from the country soon but, the latter didn’t want to miss any updates regarding this matter.

"Yes. I’ll hang up now. Good night, Second Young Master," Mr. Wei replied in understanding.

"En. Thank you for your hard work tonight."

"You’re welcome."

Ending the call, Calix placed the phone back on the table. He didn’t want to burden his mind tonight with any thoughts about the Li family.

Calix wished to spend as much quality time together with Leslie and Calliope before his business trip in a few days. He already had what he wanted to do tomorrow in mind.

His wife and daughter would surely love the idea.

Calix hurriedly changed into a set of mint green pajamas before rushing to the washroom. He didn’t spend more time than necessary to prep himself before bed.

As expected, Calliope was already inside Leslie’s bedroom. The little dumpling picked five storybooks while bringing her favorite plushies. Seeing them made him laugh.

"Won’t you sleep even before I finish one of the books, en?"

Calix playfully teased Calliope as he approached the bed. The little one was lying on her tummy while reading.

"Papa, no talk too much ah," Calliope pouted. Frowning, her chubby cheeks puffing before she smiled sweetly, "Read Poppy a story, please~

Calix shook his head in helplessness by how quickly Calliope changed her mood. Throwing himself on the huge bed, he glanced around the room.

"Where’s your mama? In the washroom?"

Leslie was nowhere to be seen. Calix initially thought she had finished getting ready for bed. Mrs. Su was still outside, meaning the lady didn’t ask the private nurse for assistance.

"Mama brush her teeth and wash her face," Calliope sat on the bed close to Calix. She pushed all the books to her father, "Papa, look! Which one to read ah."

Chuckles slipped out between Calix’s lips. Taking all the storybooks, he read the titles one by one. Calliope hugged the toy Mimo while sitting with her short legs outstretched.

"Sophie and the Talking Tea Kettle... How about this one?"

Calix pointed to the book showing a little girl on the cover. She was talking to the kettle possessing two eyes and one mouth.

Calliope pouted. Shaking her head, she said, "No~ Papa, choose another one."

"Hurm... Pip and the Perfect Pumpkin Patch?" Calix picked another book.

"Wow~ Pumpkin soup sounds delicious ah," Calliope smacked her lips, almost drooling.

"..."

Calix wondered how Calliope’s mind worked. The book mentioned nothing about pumpkin soup yet, she thought of the food because of the pumpkin patch in the title.

"So, you want me to read this one, buttercup?" Calix lightly rocked the book in his hand.

"En. No, another one," replied Calliope while shaking her head.

"..."

Laughing in helplessness, Calix’s eyes scanned the remaining books out of five. He pointed to a book with a pink cover showing a little girl lying right next to a chocolate river.

"Rosie and the Chocolate River. This one?"

Calliope’s eyes twinkled. She continued nodding like a little chick pecking grain.

"Papa, is chocolate river real?" Calliope rolled on the bed, stopping right next to Calix, "Poppy wanna see one ah~"

Calix chuckled at the sight of Calliope’s expectant look. Opening the book, he smiled at his daughter while saying, "Well, chocolate rivers don’t exist naturally. But, you can still find something that looks like it."

"Oh? How? Can Poppy swim?"

Calliope’s attention strayed far from the storybook. Her mind began to imagine herself floating on a chocolate river as she often did at the rooftop pool.

"Hahaha! Is that all you think now, en?"

"Chocolate is delicious ah~"

Calix lightly pinched Calliope’s fleshy right cheek, earning another pout from her. Mirth flickered in his eyes as his daughter’s antics amused him.

"Why? Are we going to a chocolate show later? Maybe... a chocolate museum?"

Calliope and Calix collectively looked in the direction of the washroom. They saw Leslie standing there with one hand grasping the wall.

"Mama!"

"Hahaha! That’s a good idea. It’ll be a good family outing."

Chuckling, Leslie nodded, agreeing with Calix. She had been listening to the father and daughter’s funny exchange inside the washroom. Their banter entertained her.

Calix slid out of bed, hurrying to Leslie. He didn’t support her as usual because she refused but, he made sure to stand very close to Leslie, just in case she stumbled.

"We haven’t had any family outing recently..." Leslie smiled at Calix before drifting her eyes to the happy Calliope, "Maybe, we can have one after your return?"

Aside from the occasional night drive and the festival, Calix and Leslie hadn’t taken Calliope to other places. Now that they had confronted the Li family, there was nothing urgent on their list currently.

"Consider it done. There’s a nice one in this city. We can even have a staycation there."

Calix was more than happy to accommodate his wife and daughter’s wishes. He also didn’t want Calliope to feel stuck in this manor despite her love for home adventures.

"Great. Let’s talk about it again."

"Yay! Chocolate museum!"

Calliope happily rolled on the bed. She couldn’t wait for the day to come!

Little did the little one and the lady expect another surprise tomorrow.
