Chapter 393: No One Is Blaming Who, Or Are You?

"Big Sister, Big Brother, don’t just stop there. Come and join us here."

Irene’s voice rose above the strained silence of the room. The calm look on her youthful face was a contrast to the disbelief expressed by Old Madam Li, Gladys, Geoffrey and Deena.

"Oh! Yes, yes, we should get to our seats," Calix nodded twice, still sounding cheerful. Looking at Leslie, he asked, "My dear wife, where do you wanna sit?"

Leslie chuckled, amused by Calix’s attempt to show the Li family how different the atmosphere between them was.

"Let’s sit there... Next to Irene," Leslie gestured toward the young teen with a tilt of her chin.

The dining table could fit twelve diners. A few seats were still vacant, allowing Calix and Leslie to choose which side they wanted.

Calix pushed Leslie to where Irene, Rowan and Bianca were seated without paying attention to everyone else. A few pairs of eyes followed their movements.

"Big Brother, push my sister here," said Irene as she hurriedly moved the chair next to her seat, making space for Leslie’s wheelchair.

"Oh, thank you, Irene."

The way Irene comfortably interacted with Leslie and Calix sank realization into Old Madam Li’s mind. Perplexed, her old eyes darted from her youngest grandchild to Rowan and Bianca.

The two of them...

Even though Rowan and Bianca didn’t speak to Calix and Leslie like Irene, they didn’t show traces of surprise on their faces.

Her lips quivering with age and emotion, Old Madam Li forced some words out of her mouth.

"Y-you... you three knew? Rowan, how long... how long have you known?"

Old Madam Li might know next to nothing regarding post-coma patients but, she believed her eldest granddaughter Charlene had been awake for quite a long time.

Geoffrey and Deena exchanged glances upon hearing Old Madam Li’s questions while Gladys’ face remained deathly pale.

"Mother, our Charlene has..."

"I’ve been conscious for over two months, Grandmother... Thank you for being so concerned."

Leslie answered on behalf of Rowan. Despite smiling at Old Madam Li, her eyes had no signs of warmth. She stared at the old lady as if the latter was a nuisance to her face.

Old Madam Li’s cheeks flushed in embarrassment. She could perfectly hear the ridicule in Leslie’s voice. The mockery in the young lady’s eyes also set her heart ablaze.

"Grandmother-in-law, don’t be so agitated ah. Let’s chat over food."

Still wearing a sunny facade on his face, Calix chimed in. He pulled out the chair next to Leslie, ready to sit down.

"Haha... we couldn’t help but feel shocked," Geoffrey laughed awkwardly in his sorry attempt to diffuse the lingering tension in the air, "Don’t blame your grandmother here."

"No one is blaming who..." replied Leslie with a smirk. She looked pointedly at Geoffrey, "Or, are you?"

"...certainly not."

Geoffrey’s breath stuck to his throat. Irritation flared from inside him but, he knew he shouldn’t show his discontent about this situation when Calix was present.

"Ahem!"

Old Madam Li’s cough attracted everyone’s attention. They could sense the old lady’s anger spiraling out of her body yet, she still made the effort to act civil for being the elder in this group.

"Let’s talk over dinner. We surely have so many things to hear from Charlene and Calix."

Leslie and Calix exchanged a knowing look while the rest replied to Old Madam Li with distraught hums. They seemed trying to regain their shaken composure as they straightened their postures on the seats.

Within seconds of silence, three attendants walked inside the dining room, pushing food trolleys along.

Calix and Leslie were quiet and so did the Li family as they watched the waiters serving plates of dishes on the table.

The distinctive scents of Thai cuisine wafted in the air. Steamed seabass in chili lime sauce, green curry chicken, stir-fried clams with chili paste and chicken tom yum were among the dishes served. They were paired with fragrant Thai jasmine rice.

Once the waiters left, Calix rose to his feet. He tapped the table to get everyone’s attention. Leslie smilingly stared at her husband.

"Good evening to all. I want to thank you for coming here tonight. It means so much to me and Charlene."

Calix’s clear tone resonated in the room. He threw his gaze around before locking his eyes on Leslie’s smiling countenance. They fondly looked at one another.

Everyone in the room could tell the husband and wife’s relationship was better than expected. One particular person clenched her hands tightly as envy shrouded her heart.

Lifting his eyes from Leslie, Calix continued speaking. His tone remained steady as he faced Old Madam Li’s discontent gaze and the others’ baffled ones.

"Upon my suggestion, Charlene has been recovering in secret. She has achieved several milestones during this short period. We’ve just recently decided to surprise you with her appearance."

Calix took a brief pause. He glanced at Rowan, Bianca and Irene for a moment.

"As for my parents-in-law and Irene, they only knew about Charlene last week. We asked them to keep quiet until an appropriate time."

Calix’s words implied he was the one responsible for persuading Leslie to hide her current health condition from everyone. He also said Rowan, Bianca and Irene had just learned about it recently.

Leslie wouldn’t contradict Calix’s words. Rowan, Bianca and Irene also wouldn’t bring up the truth.

"Please enjoy your meal, everyone. Hopefully, tonight will be a memorable one for the Li family. Eat to your hearts’ desire."

Well, learning about Leslie officially cutting ties with them would surely cement this night into their minds. A very memorable moment indeed.

Calix smiled before lowering himself to the chair. He was amused to see how hard Geoffrey, Deena and Gladys trying to mask their hard feelings.

As for Old Madam Li, her gaze was still chilly but, she knew better not to ruin this family dinner so early. Raising her hand, she lifted the teacup in front of her.

"We surely have questions over our excitement about Charlene’s recovery. For now, let’s enjoy our meal."

Geoffrey nodded with a sullen look while Deena and Gladys sneaked glances at Calix and Leslie. Rowan, Bianca and Irene remained quiet.

Leslie and Calix smiled at themselves.

The show had just started.
