Chapter 392: A Wickedly Stunning Fire Goddess
Leslie and Calix arrived at the restaurant a few minutes before seven in the evening. Logan and two other bodyguards accompanied the husband and wife. Calliope was left at home with the rest.
As the day slowly transitioned to night, the sun descended below the horizon. Hues of ruby, amber and violet painted the canvas of the city’s skyline.
Logan pulled up the executive van outside the foyer of the fine dining restaurant. One of his colleagues brought out the wheelchair while their boss carried his wife.
The bright lights of the porch basked on Calix and Leslie’s gleeful faces. Despite coming here for an important issue, they didn’t seem tense at all.
If the Li family saw how happy the husband and wife were, they might vomit blood in distress and cry foul. Of course, they would be stunned silly upon seeing Leslie first.
"Careful."
After lowering Leslie to the wheelchair, Calix fondly stared at her from head to toe. Honey of affection dripped from his eyes.
His wife appeared wickedly stunning in the chiffon red dress. The flowy hem grazed the middle of her calves while the sheer butterfly sleeves veiled from her shoulders to the elbows.
Leslie let her silky long hair loose, draping on her right shoulder. Tiny red flower pins adorned one side of her head, courtesy of Mrs. Su. Her lips were painted with a bright red color, resembling rose petals.
The lady’s appearance in the bold colors tonight was hugely different from her usual soft styles.
Realizing the heat of Calix’s stare, Leslie let out soft laughter. She looked back at him with a meaningful gaze, "Why are you smiling like that?"
"My wife resembles a fire goddess right now. So charming," replied Calix, words of praise flowing out smoothly from his mouth, "Well, do anything you want, wifey. I’ll handle all the mess."
"How reassuring to have a reliable husband like you..." Leslie chuckled. Shaking her head in helplessness, she gestured at the glass door entrance with a tilt of her chin, "We need to get inside first... to start our fight."
"Aye aye, my lady."
Calix pushed Leslie inside the lobby. The hostess welcomed their arrival before one of the attendants brought them to the private dining room.
"This is the room, Mr. Xu," said the attendant in a low voice once they arrived, "Should I open it now?"
Waving one of his hands, Calix told the attendant, "Don’t open it yet. One more person will arrive, my last guest. Maybe in half an hour from now. Escort him immediately here."
Calix’s final guest was one of the lawyers in the Xu family’s legal team. As instructed by Andrian[01], Calix told Mr. Wei to come to this restaurant tonight. Certain issues needed to be handled by the attorney.
Abiding by Calix’s words, the attendant waited for his order before opening the door. He took this chance to ask, "Should we serve the food after your last guest arrives, Mr. Xu?"
"You can serve it immediately."
"Understand."
The attendant clasped his hands together on his stomach. He waited for Calix’s instruction to open the door and announce his and his wife’s arrival.
Lowering his eyes to Leslie, Calix gently rubbed one side of her face. Mischief glinted in his eyes, "Are you ready to cause havoc, my dear wife? They won’t ever think they’ll see you now after months."
Aside from Rowan, Bianca and Irene, the rest of the main branch of the Li family only expected Calix to appear alone. They thought Leslie—Charlene—was still confined to bed, unconscious.
Calix purposely put on a bodycam in the shape of a black bowtie. It matched perfectly with his black suit and red dress shirt.
Hehe, he couldn’t wait to record the Li family’s foolish and enraged looks once they saw Leslie and heard their demands.
"They will think they’re seeing a ghost," Leslie shrugged, not caring about the Li family’s frightful response, "Well, let’s get this done with and... return to our daughter."
"Oh, I almost forgot. Poppy wants me to read her bedtime stories tonight."
Calix and Leslie informed Calliope they would return before her bedtime, unlike the night the husband and wife went to the rose garden.
The little one made her papa pinky promise to read her stories. She also wanted to sleep with her parents tonight.
Drifting his eyes from Leslie to the attendant, Calix said, "Announce my arrival only. Don’t mention about my wife."
"Understand, Mr. Xu."
The attendant was inwardly confused as he listened to the husband and wife’s conversation but, he asked nothing. He and every staff of this restaurant were ordered not to pry into the patrons’ situation unless something dangerous happened.
Knocking on the door twice, the attendant opened the door. Calix and Leslie waited quietly as the man walked inside the room.
"Mr. Xu is here."
Calix and Leslie heard gasps coming from the Li family. The man had started pushing the wheelchair through the door when Old Madam Li’s excited voice rang in the room.
"Oh, my grandson-in-law is here. Calix, we’re waiting for... huh?"
"W-what?"
Pairs of widened eyes stared at the door, or rather at Leslie in stunned silence. Everyone anticipated to see Calix walking past the door, but...
"Good evening, everyone."
Holding himself back from laughing, Calix smilingly greeted the room. His eyes darted from Old Madam Li to everyone else.
"Didn’t you guys miss seeing my wife? Surprise! She’s here!"
Calix’s cheerful tone resonated in the deathly still dining room. No one from the Li family had woken up from their shock. Rowan, Bianca and Irene remained in silence as they witnessed the situation.
Leslie swept her gaze around the room. It seemed like everyone was here aside from Derek, Glady’s younger brother.
Leslie locked her eyes on the pale Old Madam Li. The tyrannical matriarch was too stupefied that she unconsciously erased the usual disdainful look on her face.
Curling up her red lips into a sneer, Leslie asked mockingly, "Do you like this surprise, dear grandmother?"
Leslie’s question broke through the spell that held the Li family speechless. All of them stared at her in disbelief.
"C-Charlene... what are... what are you doing here?
A panicked Gladys pointed at Leslie. Her face was deathly pale.
"To join our family dinner, of course," replied Leslie, her tone imbued with clear ridicule, "Why? Aren’t you happy... to see me awake and healthy, dear cousin?"
"I... I don’t mean... I don’t mean that... I just..."
Unable to form coherent words, Gladys clamped her mouth shut. The way Leslie snickered sent shivers down her back.
