Chapter 390: She Didn’t Need That Kind of Negativity in Life

"Haa... haa..."

Breathing heavily, Leslie paused from walking. Her chest heaved up and down as she gasped for air. She tightly grasped the steel rods of the parallel bars, trying to endure the flaring pain from her legs.

Leslie was in another session of her rehab with Ms. Chen. Her speech therapy session with Ms. Yao ended around two hours ago. She took a brief rest before continuing the day with the physical rehab.

The clock on the wall was currently pointed to twelve-twenty, way past her usual rehab session time.

"You’re doing great, Mrs. Xu. You’ll reach the end this time! Only three more steps!"

Stroking Leslie’s back, Ms. Chen continued encouraging her to move forward. Her voice echoed clearly in the gym, rising above the former’s panting.

Sweat soaked the entirety of Leslie’s back. Fighting against the intense pain, she tightened her palms holding the steel rods. Her heart rammed heavily against her chest, sending a buzzing sound into her head.

"Three... three more steps... Yes!"

Sucking in a sharp breath, Leslie moved her right leg forward before forcing the left one to follow. Her teary eyes focused on the end line of the parallel bars.

Just a little more! She just had to endure for a little more!

Her face was all flushed, Leslie gritted her teeth as more sweat beaded her forehead. Ms. Chen continued shouting out her encouragement.

"H-hah!"

"You did it!"

Ms. Chen hurriedly supported Leslie as she tried her hardest not to fall after reaching the end line. Her trembling legs almost gave out.

"Mrs. Xu, you did it! You walked till the end!"

Ms. Chen’s excited tone drew a faint smile on Leslie’s lips. Her heart swelled with pride as she thought of the fruits of her labor today.

"Haa... haa... good... thank goodness..."

After so long, she finally made it to the finishing line of the parallel bars. The distance might seem small to most people but, she cried sweats and tears on the days she tried to conquer it.

Ms. Chen assisted Leslie in cooling down after such an intense session. The latter was hot and wet from her sweat yet, nothing could dampen her mood.

"Don’t overexert yourself in at least three hours. You reached the finishing line sooner than the expected time. Mrs. Xu, you might get to alternate between the wheelchair and walker soon."

As Leslie lay on the single bed placed inside the gym, she listened to Ms. Chen’s advice and review for the day. Lines of exhaustion marred her face yet, the therapist’s words kept her spirit alive.

"Mrs. Xu, you aren’t suited to walk a long distance so, you can’t fully transition to using a walker yet. Let’s see how your performance is in these two weeks. Is that clear with you?"

"Yes, I understand," Leslie nodded twice, her smile widening, "I’ll practice walking but, I won’t push myself... Thank you for your advice, Ms. Chen."

Leslie was more than happy to hear Ms. Chen’s assessment of her so far. The physical therapist had done so much to build her spirit and strength. The same went to Dr. Mo and Ms. Yao.

Mrs. Su brought Leslie to the bedroom once the session ended. The private caretaker had filled the tub with water. Leslie often had a long soak after such an intensive session.

"Mama~"

"Oh, Poppy?"

Leslie had just sat inside the tub after rinsing herself in the shower cubicle when the familiar milky voice rang in the air. Looking in the direction of the door, she saw Calliope poking her small head in.

"Mama, can Poppy and Mimo come in?" asked Calliope, still hiding her body behind the wall.

"You might get wet," Leslie chuckled in helplessness. Moving closer to the edge of the tub, she gestured at a small pink plastic chair nearby, "You can sit there, Poppy..."

"Yay!"

Calliope happily headed inside the washroom once she got permission. Her two short hands hugged the toy Mimo close to her chest.

"Mama, Mama not hungry?" asked Calliope as she sat on the plastic chair. She often used it whenever she accompanied Leslie during her bathing.

"Mama is hungry but, Mama is sleepy more..." Leslie crossed her arms on the edge of the tub. Smiling at Calliope, she asked, "What did Poppy eat? Your Granny Wendy has... served you lunch, en?"

Leslie’s physical rehab session usually ended before noon, allowing her to bathe and rest before having lunch with Calliope at one. But, the plan changed today.

"Hehe, Poppy eat yummies~" Calliope laughed as she swayed her short legs. Hugging Mimo tightly, she happily told her mother, "Sweet and sour chicken, croquettes, carrot and broccolis! Poppy eat everything!"

Following the end of her story, Calliope smugly smacked her small chest. Her action earned laughter from Leslie. The echoes were amplified in the washroom.

"Wow~ Mama’s darling ate her veggies..." Leslie clapped her hands, amused with Calliope’s story about her lunch, "Poppy is a really good girl."

"Hehehe~"

Calliope continued talking about her day when Leslie was busy with her rehab. Aunt Wendy allowed the little one to watch her cooking while Uncle Raymond taught her about flowers in the yard.

If not for them, Calliope might feel bored and alone.

’We haven’t finalized anything about Poppy’s kindergarten.’

Leslie recalled her conversation with Lucille during the Dragon Boat Festival. She inquired about more information regarding Amelia’s kindergarten.

Calix’s young niece also spoke fondly about her kindergarten to Calliope during their playtime. Leslie could tell her darling daughter wished to attend one.

’I need to talk about it to Calix before his business trip. Well, for sure after meeting them.’

Humming to a tune, Leslie’s eyes glinted with mischief. She couldn’t wait to end her—Charlene’s—connection to the Li family except for Irene.

Old Madam Li would surely be fuming while the rest would say Leslie was overreacting. They might even try to gaslight her into thinking everything that had gone wrong was her fault.

Nah. She didn’t need that kind of negativity in life.

"Poppy~"

Calliope perked up once Leslie sweetly called her.

"Mama will take a nap first... then, wanna play together?"

Calliope’s eyes widened in delight.

"Want! Mama, let’s play!"

"Hehe, that’s good~"

Bursting into laughter, Leslie no longer thought about the Li family. Her daughter’s presence was enough to cheer her up.

Of course, including her husband who genuinely loved her.
