Chapter 386: The Hope Kept Him Going
"How did I end up on your lap?"
Leslie’s question earned laughter from Calix. Pressing his head on her shoulder, he secured his arms around her waist. The light vibrations of his body were channeled to her.
In disbelief, Leslie smacked Calix’s back, "Hey! Don’t just laugh ah!"
"Hahaha! Sorry! Sorry! I just carried you up. You didn’t realize, en?"
Calix held back from laughing too much. Tilting his chin up, his lips melted into a smile. Honey dripped from his eyes the longer he looked fondly at Leslie’s flushed face.
"...why are you looking at me like that?" asked Leslie weakly. Not knowing where to place her hands, she kept grasping both sides of Calix’s shoulders.
"Can’t I look at my wife like this?" Calix raised his brows. His teasing tone was imbued with affection, "My beloved wife, en?"
Leslie bit her lower lip before ashamedly recalling what had happened earlier. She was so immersed in Calix’s passionate kisses that she didn’t notice he carried her to sit on his lap.
En... She could say CEO Xu was a good kisser ah.
"Seems like you’ll be more shameless from now... I should have known..."
Leslie pretended to glare at Calix, prompting him to cackle again. The melody of his giggles resonated in the air, harmonizing with the echoes of the gentle lapping of water and the petals rustling.
"I’ll wear my crown with honor," replied Calix in between laughter. Lifting one hand, he gently rubbed one of Leslie’s cheeks, "Make sure to prepare yourself, en?"
"Shameless."
"Haha, indeed I am."
Leslie lowered her head to one side of Calix’s shoulders, hiding her reddened face. The man kept his arms steady around her waist. Her legs dangled above the ground as she remained sitting on his lap.
Closing her eyes, Leslie listened to the song of nature in the surroundings. She loved how comfortable this place made her. The sweet rose fragrant helped to calm her nerves.
CEO Xu did such a good job in choosing this charming rose garden as the venue for his confession tonight.
"Calix."
Calix hummed softly in response. Leslie chuckled when the man brushed his lips on one side of her face, making her feel ticklish.
"I just wanna say... I can’t return those words to you yet. I’m sorry."
Leslie’s whisper paused Calix’s action. Smiling in helplessness, he pulled away slightly from her, allowing him an appropriate distance to look directly at her face.
The husband and wife locked eyes on one another. The garden lampposts and the fairy lights basked them under their dazzling lights, casting their silhouettes on the ground.
"I’m thankful enough you give me a chance, Leslie. Please don’t ever say sorry about it."
Pursing her lips, Leslie asked cautiously, "What if I give you fake hope?"
She knew her heart was leaning toward him but, his feelings for her were deeper than hers.
"Whether it’s real or fake, the hope keeps me going," Calix tilted his head, his voice soft yet showing his firm view, "Let’s see where my courtship will lead us, en?"
"...okay."
The mellowness in Calix’s eyes caught Leslie in a trance. Her heart pounded heavily in her chest as his previous words touched her.
Blinking slowly, Leslie couldn’t take her gaze away from Calix’s smiling countenance even if she wanted to. His sweetness lured her toward him.
Leslie let go of her right hand from Calix’s left shoulder. Without hesitation, she gently pressed her index finger under his left eye, tracing the two moles.
Calix’s smile softened further. He simply let Leslie do as she wished.
"There’s one thing for sure..." Leslie slowly lowered her fingers before the tips stopped on Calix’s lips, her cheeks resembling the red roses, "Your kisses don’t repulse me... because it’s you."
Chuckling, Calix smiled with pride because of the few words muttered by Leslie. He took her hand in his, bringing her fingers away from his lips.
"May I kiss you again?"
Instead of replying to Calix’s question, Leslie quietly dipped her head in and let her lips touch his. She sensed him freeze in shock before he steadily took charge.
"Hehe, don’t be that breathless ah."
Calix’s teasing whisper earned a pout from Leslie.
"...you know I can’t hold my breath well yet."
"Hehehe. It’s fine."
Securing the back of Leslie’s head with one hand, Calix deepened the kiss. Her sweetness made him go crazy inside but, he still managed to restrain himself. He didn’t want to scare her away if he acted inconsiderately.
The moonlight bore witness to the favorable change in the husband and wife’s relationship.
Calix and Leslie left the rose garden slightly before ten. None of them realized how much time had passed as they enjoyed each other’s company.
Sitting together in the sedan, Calix held the steering wheel with one hand while the other interlocked with Leslie’s fingers. She blushed when the man randomly brushed his lips on her knuckles.
Aiya, CEO Xu showed no signs of stopping now.
Calliope had gone to bed long before Calix and Leslie arrived home.
Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond kept the little one entertained with games, including Mrs. An who read bedtime stories for the little one. Mrs. Su had gone home a few hours earlier.
"I hope Poppy didn’t trouble you much..."
Leslie smiled at Mrs. An as the private nurse massaged her legs. She had already changed into her cotton nightgown and let her hair loose from the braid.
"She’s a good child, Mrs. Xu," Mrs. An replied with a chuckle. She straightened Leslie’s legs on the bed before standing up, "A smart one too. She speaks better than most children her age."
Leslie’s heart swelled with pride upon listening to Mrs. An. She and Calix went to Calliope’s bedroom as soon as they arrived, seeing how well their daughter slept.
"I’ll be outside, Mrs. Xu. Good night."
"Good night. Thank you again, Mrs. An..."
Mrs. An quietly left the bedroom, leaving Leslie alone. She had just stepped outside when Calix suddenly appeared in his light yellow pajamas.
"Has my wife slept?" asked Calix quietly. His eyes drifted to the closed door of Leslie’s bedroom.
"Not yet, Mr. Xu," replied Mrs. An, "Good night."
"En. You too, Mrs. An."
Pushing the door open, Calix sneaked into the room. He saw Leslie lying on the bed. Her figure was illuminated by the underbed lights.
"I thought you wouldn’t come here..."
Leslie covered her mouth, muffling her giggles behind her palm. She stared at Calix as he approached the bed.
"How could I not ah? My wife is here."
Smiling sheepishly, Calix crawled under the same blanket Leslie used. Her chuckles resonated in the air before they touched his pounding heart.
As Calix lay on the bed, he gently brought Leslie into his embrace. His smile deepened as she also returned his hug.
"It’s a pity we couldn’t dance tonight..."
Leslie’s words piqued Calix’s interest. Looking at her sleepy countenance, he whispered, "Dancing? Why?"
"Hehe, like when we’re in Rome[01]," Leslie chuckled as she fondly retraced her memories. Her eyes locked with Calix’s, "You invited me to dance... after the surprise candlelit dinner... Oh!"
"W-what? Leslie, what’s wrong?"
Leslie’s sudden exclamation stunned Calix. His expression changed to a confused one when she burst into laughter.
"Hehe, I just remember what I thought about you that night."
Blinking, Calix asked cautiously, "...what was it?"
Was it anything good? Or, bad?
Under Calix’s worried eyes, Leslie whispered, her whole face beaming.
"I thought how easily I could fall in love with a man like you."
