Chapter 373: Before the Dragon Boat Festival

Chapter 373: Before the Dragon Boat Festival

In the following days leading up to the Dragon Boat Festivals, the atmosphere at Graceville Manor was generally peaceful.

Leslie focused on her rehab sessions while not neglecting Calliope. Sometimes, the little one accompanied her in the gym-turned-rehab in the basement.

Calix was busier at work before the public holiday started, including his upcoming business trip. He felt Edward’s absence because the other assistants were not as efficient as the younger man.

At the same time, Calix had to deal with Old Madam Li. The matriarch wanted to invite him to the Li family’s ancestral home for the festival yet, she didn’t receive a satisfactory answer from her grandson-in-law.

"I’ll come to visit you next week, Grandmother-in-law. I’ll be busy with my family."

"Why don’t we have two families meeting? I’d love to meet your grandmother and parents. You haven’t visited me in a long time ah."

"No can do, Grandmother-in-law."

Calix promised to visit the Li family’s ancestral home after the festival. Despite being upset, Old Madam Li couldn’t do anything. She begrudgingly accepted the arrangement.

All in all, Leslie and Calix weren’t too disturbed by Old Madam Li’s call. They also were relieved because Rowan and Bianca seemed to lay low after their previous confrontation.

The day Calix met Old Madam Li would be the day Leslie officially severed her ties with the Li family.

As for Evelyn, she succeeded in irritating Chase. The man came home exhausted from his long and hectic work hours to tiny glitters at the random places and trails of ants.

News about the rising actor’s apartment became home to ants and glitters reached the news site. Most people thought Chase had bad luck with an obsessive fan.

"Urgh, it’s a waste I can’t see his face ah. I should’ve really installed cameras!"

Evelyn’s complaint made Leslie and Calix smile in helplessness. The superstar initially planned to bug Chase’s apartment with spy cameras but, she ended up forfeiting the idea.

Soon, Evelyn flew to the west of the country, planning to stay there for two days. Bella and her small family lived in a small town there after leaving Silvercrest City.

According to the report, Mrs. Yao opened a small food stall using what was left of Bella’s acting fee. They rented a small one-bedroom apartment nearby.

Bella and her younger brother took part-time jobs most of the time to help their struggling mother. At the same time, they didn’t neglect their studies.

Evelyn went to meet Bella with a heart full of hope but, she returned with disappointing news. Without hiding anything from Calix and Leslie, she informed them about her meeting with the teenager.

"Bella and her mother refused to pursue this case. They said they just want to forget everything that happened."

Leslie and Calix could tell how disappointed Evelyn was but, they quickly cheered them up.

"They’re most likely nervous and afraid. You left your contact number with them, right? They might come around later. Even if they’re not, you won’t stop here, don’t you?"

Evelyn knew her elder brother was speaking the truth. Bella and her mother insisted on burying what Chase had done to the teenager, but this didn’t mean the end.

"I’ll destroy him now."

Evelyn’s security team began anonymously sending various tips about Chase’s hidden misconduct to the media.

Two years ago, Chase started a fight in a small bar with a group of men. The reason? He tried forcing them to hand him some money.

One year ago, Chase was involved in illegal racing. He claimed he was blackmailed into joining the race.

Seven months ago just before Chase and Evelyn started dating, Chase was almost caught drinking with minors. He successfully fled from his acquaintance’s apartment and fabricated his alibi.

Calix’s security team handed the evidence and witnesses’ statements to Evelyn’s.

Most of the time, the witnesses tried getting the trashy man to be responsible for his crimes but, his agency did a good job in shielding him.

Even though Chase was still a less popular actor, they believed in his talent. The agency also didn’t want to tarnish their reputation by getting the public knew they signed a problematic actor under their wing.

Including the hard piece of evidence, the man’s agency had a terrible time dodging the public’s wrath. Chase’s reputation dropped in just a few days.

In just a short time, the evening of Wednesday, June 21st arrived. Calix returned earlier than usual because all of them would head to the Xu family’s ancestral home.

The Dragon Boat Festival started tomorrow. The celebration would end on the coming Sunday. Calix was scheduled to fly to Switzerland at the beginning of the other week.

Knock! Knock!

Startled by the knocking sound, Calix lifted up his eyes from his working desk. He saw Leslie appearing at the door of his home office. He unconsciously tightened his hold on a piece of paper.

"Everyone’s ready now?" asked Calix as he glanced at the wall clock. Rising to his feet, he said, "Sorry, I keep you guys waiting."

Calix headed to the home office after making sure everything essential was all packed. They didn’t have to bring many belongings because Harper arranged for their necessities.

After finishing a few tasks, Calix lingered a moment longer. He took out a file from the topmost drawer, the one containing the face sketches.

Despite being busy with the company and Evelyn’s matter, Calix didn’t forget about his search. His security team only had these sketches to rely on.

Calix wanted them to look for the rundown apartment where the couple lived but, he barely had helpful clues. He also hadn’t found matches from news about hikers’ deaths in autumn.

"Do you have incomplete work?" Leslie looked from Calix to his working desk. She didn’t wheel herself into the home office, "You’re busy even... right before the festival..."

Smiling, Calix shook his head, "It’s nothing ah. Wait for a second."

"En."

Putting the file inside the drawer, Calix held back from looking disappointed. He wondered what kind of dreams he would have tonight if all three of them slept together.

Whatever it was, Calix hoped he would get beneficial clues. He loathed how desperate he felt because this seemed to be a wild goose chase.

The man and the woman...

Just who were they?
