Chapter 360: Fried Chicken Seduction at Midnight

"It’s indeed time to tell Irene. Tell her to come either tomorrow or this Sunday."

Finding no faults with Calix’s suggestion, Leslie nodded despite feeling heavyhearted. She felt bad because Irene had been wanting to meet her over one week ago[01].

Leslie persuaded Irene to delay their meeting until after the latter’s exam. It seemed like the time had come.

"Okay... I’ll tell Irene to come tomorrow..." Leslie pursed her lips, seemingly lost momentarily in her thoughts. Opening her mouth, she resumed, "No matter what, she’ll be shocked... to meet Poppy..."

Leslie drifted her eyes from Calix’s face to Calliope. The little dumpling was sleeping on her father’s lap. Perhaps the energy she spent playing in the pool led her to sleep earlier than usual.

Calix glanced at Calliope. Letting out a helpless chuckle, he patted the little one’s bum.

"Irene will be shocked but, she’ll be happy next," responded Calix. His eyes returned to Leslie’s worried countenance, "She’s a tough one despite looking weak on the outside."

"Yes, you’re right..."

Irene was generally a quiet child. Thus, Leslie didn’t expect the former to seek help from Calix first regarding Charlene’s staircase incident.

After knowing the truth, Irene played a role in capturing the culprit Sarah before she reprimanded Rowan and Bianca for neglecting Charlene all this time.

No matter what kind of obstacle came her way, Irene would face it head-on.

Following Calix’s advice, Leslie sent a message to Irene. She told the high school girl to get ready around nine in the morning. Uncle Raymond would come to pick her up.

"Are they still bothering you?" Leslie lifted her eyes from the phone screen to Calix. Curiosity glimmered in her orbs, mixing with worries, "Luckily, they didn’t try... to contact me with other numbers..."

"Only twice this week," Calix shrugged, paying not much attention to Rowan and Bianca’s attempt to reach him, "I tell them we’ll meet after the festival."

"Before your trip to Switzerland?" asked Leslie.

"Hehe, wanna join me?" Calix raised his eyebrows, his eyes twinkling.

Leslie blinked, momentarily in a daze before laughter escaped her lips. Shaking her head in helplessness, she didn’t expect Calix to ask her another question altogether.

"Hehe, your idea is tempting, but... no, thanks," Leslie smiled apologetically, feeling bad about turning Calix down, "You’ll be busy with work and I don’t want to travel... far in this state..."

"I know, Leslie. It’s fine," Calix softened his smile, trying to reassure Leslie he didn’t take her refusal to heart, "I’ve been thinking about that too. You won’t be suited for a long flight. Poppy might feel the same way."

Lowering her head, Leslie nodded once. Despite knowing Calix was speaking the truth, she couldn’t shake her discomfort away.

"...en?"

Sensing a familiar heat on her hands, Leslie darted her eyes to her lap. She saw one of Calix’s broad palms covering the back of her hands. Lifting her gaze, once again she looked at him.

"Let’s go to the beach next month," Calix broke into laughter, seemingly pleased to imagine their future family trip, "Hehe, we need to familiarize our little princess with vacations."

"Hehe, that sounds nice..."

Curling up her lips, Leslie happily agreed.

Not long after, Leslie received a reply from Irene. The high school girl vowed to be ready even before Uncle Raymond arrived. The message made Leslie chuckle.

"Let’s go put this chubby one in bed," Calix carefully adjusted Calliope’s position before carrying her in one of his arms, "You. Sleepy already?"

"Not yet..." Leslie glanced at the clock, finding how early it was, "Oh, it’s only nine..."

Pursing his lips, Calix thought of something before he cautiously asked, "Wanna watch a movie together?"

"Sure... You should pick the movie this time..."

"Hehe, okay."

Leslie slowly stood up, wanting to sit in the wheelchair. Calix hurriedly supported her with his other free hand.

"Oh... you have given the info to Eve, didn’t you?"

Leslie recalled what Calix had just told her this late afternoon. She watched him quietly lowering Calliope to the bed. The little one’s sleep wasn’t disturbed by the movements.

Calix held back from smiling too much. He noticed Evelyn rushing to the lounge earlier before she quickly backtracked.

Without saying anything about it, Calix said, "I had. Let’s see what she’ll decide next."

Leslie simply nodded, no longer continuing the subject. After kissing Calliope good night, the husband and wife quietly left the little one’s princess room. They headed to Leslie’s bedroom across the hallway.

Calix and Leslie settled on the bed, leaning against the headboard. The former picked an action comedy movie about a team of police trying to expose a gang. They went as far as disguising themselves as fried chicken sellers[02].

None of them spoke much as they sat comfortably side by side. Laughter erupted in the bedroom the longer they watched the movie.

"Aiya, looking at the fried chicken makes me... hungry ah..."

Leslie salivated at the sight of the plates of fried chicken that kept appearing in the movie. She could imagine how juicy they were with every bite through their crispy skins.

Amused by Leslie’s commentary that got nothing to with the movie plot, Calix glanced at her, "Why? Do you want some? I’ll get them for you."

"...don’t be silly. It’s late already."

No matter how tempting Leslie was, she didn’t intend to trouble Calix with her sudden thirst for crispy fried chicken. She could relief her craving tomorrow.

"You really don’t want it?" Calix propped his elbow on the pillow, supporting his chin with the back of his hand. Grinning, he purposely tries to tempt Leslie, "Imagine ah. How juicy the meat is, the crispy skins coated with delicious spicy sauce. Once you eat them, you will..."

"Aaa! You’re annoying!"

Leslie abruptly buried her face under a pillow. Calix’s laughter echoed from above.

"Wow~ Fried chicken is perfect for midnight snacks. Oily and high in cholesterol but, very delicious."

"...Calix, stop!"

"You only live alone ah. You should indulge sometimes. Fried chicken... ow!"

Calix stopped talking once a pillow hit his face.
