Chapter 350: Did You Want to Be a Motivational Speaker?

"Welcome, Eve..."

"Little Aunt! Welcome!"

A delighted Leslie and enthusiastic Calliope greeted Evelyn as soon as she stepped into the manor.

The young lady smiled awkwardly at her sister-in-law and niece. She approached the elevated platform of the entryway. The lamps hung above basking her frame with their lights.

"H-hello, Second Sister and Poppy," Evelyn returned the greeting. Her voice was slightly hoarse because of her previous crying, "Sorry for intruding..."

"Don’t say that ah. We’re happy... to have you here..." Leslie chuckled. She tried to comfort the heartbroken young lady, "Feel free to stay... as long as you want..."

Leslie was initially baffled when Calix called earlier to inform her about Evelyn. She was further surprised to learn the younger lady had already caught the man cheating on her.

"Eve doesn’t wanna go back home. I’m worried to leave her alone. Can I bring her to our home?"

Calix’s intention in asking was obvious. It was a courtesy gesture of respect to Leslie, his wife. Even though he believed she wouldn’t reject his suggestion, he still asked her first.

Knowing how much Calix respected her as his wife warmed Leslie’s heart. She agreed and even told him to bring Evelyn to their home as soon as possible.

"I don’t want to bother everyone here..."

Scratching the back of her neck, Evelyn smiled sheepishly at Leslie. She nervously fiddled with the hem of her baggy shirt.

"You’re not a bother. Come, get inside..."

"Little Aunt, here, bunny slippers!"

Calliope put a pair of adult home slippers on the floor. Evelyn chuckled before thanking the little dumpling. Calliope grinned when her little aunt patted her small head.

Calix was also there with the ladies. He glanced from Evelyn to Leslie and Calliope. Smiling, he was glad to see how welcoming his wife and daughter were toward his younger sister.

"It’s dinnertime soon. We can chat more over the meal," Calix clapped his hands once, pulling the ladies’ attention to him. He told Evelyn, "Eve, you should go to your room. Aunt Wendy has prepared one for you."

"Okay, Second Brother. Well... I’ll take a bath first."

Evelyn grabbed the suitcase held by Calix. She apologized to Leslie and Calliope, saying she would love to talk more with them.

"Have a good and lovely soak..." Leslie’s smile softened. She clearly saw the gloominess Evelyn tried to hide on her puffy face, "Don’t be in a rush..."

"T-thanks..."

Evelyn hurriedly rushed inside. She met Aunt Wendy in the middle of the hallway. The housekeeper escorted her to the guest room on the third floor, the place she would be staying for now.

"Papa! Welcome home~"

Calliope jumped to Calix as soon as Evelyn was gone, hugging her father’s legs. Amused by the little muchkin’s behavior, he quickly carried her in his arms.

"Papa’s home, my buttercup. Did you play a lot today?"

Calix kissed Calliope’s cheeks, earning hearty laughter from his daughter.

"Hehe, yes~ Poppy play with Mama and Granny Wendy. Oh, kiss Mama next?"

"..."

Once again a stiff CEO Xu kissed his beloved wife’s cheeks. Despite feeling overjoyed on the inside, he couldn’t help but act awkwardly.

Leslie also did the same. She held back from teasing Calix even though his blushing look right now appeared so adorable to her.

"Let’s go upstairs..." Leslie gestured at the staircase with a slight tilt of her chin, "You should rest first... before dinner..."

"En, I better do that."

Leslie only knew little things here and there about Calix abruptly leaving work to get to Evelyn. She was tempted to ask him but, this was not the right time.

The smiling CEO Xu was actually exhausted.

The family of three headed upstairs. Calix continued carrying Calliope while Leslie controlled the wheelchair with the knobs.

"Oh, I forgot to ask," Calix put his gaze on Leslie as they walked out of the home elevator, "How’s your calf? Do you feel better?"

"I do..." Leslie nodded. She recalled her conversation with Ms. Chen earlier today, "My wounds are all superficial but... I still have to lessen my physical sessions... for now... I mean, anything related to using legs..."

Calix mellowed his smile. Supporting Calliope with one hand, he placed his other palm behind Leslie’s back.

"Perhaps, it’s time for you to take a breather too. You’ve worked hard all this time ah. Don’t push yourself too hard. Taking a break before reaching one’s goal is fine."

Giggles bubbled up from Leslie’s mouth. Tilting her head, she asked jokingly, "CEO Xu, you sound like a... motivational speaker ah. Is that... one of your ambitions when young?"

"Hurm... I think it’s my twenty-third ambition before I changed it again."

Calix’s candid reply made Leslie laugh further, infecting Calliope to laugh along despite not understanding what her parents were talking about.

"I’ll take a shower," said Calix as he lowered Calliope to the floor. They had just reached Leslie’s bedroom, "Dinner should be at eight."

"More than an hour..." Leslie glanced at the clock, thinking both Calix and Evelyn would have a decent time to rest before dinner, "I’ll wait here with... Poppy..."

"Papa, see you soon~"

"Hehe, alright."

Calix waved at Leslie and Calliope before stepping out of the lady’s bedroom. Taking off his suit jacket, he slowly headed to his chamber.

Thankfully, Evelyn agreed to come here. Leslie’s acceptance also put Calix’s mind at ease.

Turning the door handle, Calix walked inside his room. His gaze lay on the closed windows. The curtains were still drawn apart, allowing him to see the night scenery of the manor.

Calix fished his phone out of the pocket of his pants. He immediately dialed Edward’s number. His chief assistant had learned the gist of the situation.

"Hello, Boss Xu," Edward’s voice echoed at the end of the line, "Is Miss Eve okay?"

Calix swiftly gave new instructions to Edward without beating around the bush.

"She’s fine for now. Dig more dirt about that man, even the smallest or the things in the past. Keep an eye on his movements too."

"Understand."

Calix ended the call after talking about his unfinished tasks. Tossing the phone to the bed, he exhaled a long and deep sigh.
