Chapter 334: He Won’t Bring a Wife Home Soon
Calix and Leslie promised to look into suitable kindergartens for Calliope, much to the little one’s excitement.
"Hehe, thank you, Papa and Mama~"
Calix and Leslie smiled at one another, their thoughts reflected in their eyes.
Even though they were worried about placing her among the children of the elites, the husband and wife didn’t want to dampen their daughter’s joy.
Calliope openly verbalized the request with the hope it would be granted. Calix and Leslie guessed their daughter was eager to learn and make friends, especially after leaving her old friends at the orphanage.
"Poppy, wanna help Papa wash the dishes?" Calix rose to his feet. He started gathering the bowls and plates, "We can play puzzles or watch TV after this."
"Help! Poppy will help!"
A happy Calliope hurriedly finished her drink before sliding down the chair. Calix and Leslie let the little one assist in putting the dishes on the food trolley.
Soon, a melodious children’s song about washing dishes resounded in the kitchen.
"Wash the dishes🎶 Wipe the dishes🎵"
"Ring the bell for tea🎶 Three good wishes🎵"
"Three good kisses🎶 I will give to thee🎵"
Calix and Leslie sang alongside Calliope, amused by their daughter’s love for singing.
The little one happily sang while helping her mother wipe the dishes. Her father handled the washing part. In no time, the family of three returned upstairs.
Calliope wanted to resume coloring the picture book Lucille gifted to her. Calix and Leslie accompanied the little one in the second-story lounge. The time was still early, around eight-fifteen.
"You’ll go to work starting tomorrow... isn’t it?"
Leslie asked Calix without looking up from the picture book. She was coloring the stem part of the flower illustration. Calliope lay on her tummy with Mimo alongside her, filling the petals with colors.
"Yeah, need to return already. Edward’s vacation starts this coming weekend."
Calix glanced at his phone, wondering if either Edward or Manager Yin would contact him. He couldn’t help but continue to think about Evelyn’s problem.
"Mr. Edward is a good staff. Hehe, you should... give him more vacation time ah."
Throughout the short few months Leslie knew Edward, she acknowledged how much of a hard worker the man was. The suffering he endured from his childhood strengthened his soul.
Despite shouldering a huge responsibility as the chief assistant of Xu International CEO, Edward steadfastly completed everything efficiently. His work ethic was indeed exemplary.
Edward also shared the same humor as Calix. The younger man didn’t think twice to retort his boss’ strange remarks. At the same time, Edward knew when to be serious when the situation required it.
"He prefers money more than vacations," Calix laughed, recalling the years Edward worked being his close aid.
Edward often requested to change his unused vacation days into monetary bonuses. He claimed to add them to his savings and investments. He aimed to give Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond a stress-free retirement in the future.
Calix’s remark earned laughter from Leslie. Peeling her eyes away from the drawing book, she smiled funnily at him, "Seems like Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond... won’t get to see him bringing a wife home soon..."
"Hahaha, seems like it."
Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond had been worrying about Edward’s nonexistent love life. Their nephew put his sole focus into studying when he was younger before it shifted to working.
Because Edward earned more money than either of them could imagine, Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond wished he would loosen up and enjoy his life more. There was more to life than only studying and working.
"He’ll find one when... he’s ready..."
Leslie continued coloring the stem. She didn’t see Calix nodding as he agreed with her.
"He’s still young ah. His time will come eventually."
Calix and Leslie simply joked about it, understanding it was better to wait until the younger man was prepared to be in a relationship. Even if Edward chose to be single forever, it was his choice to make.
"Mama! Papa! Look!"
"Wow! Well done, my buttercup!"
"Mama’s darling is talented... Should we frame this one?"
The happy as a lark Calliope excitedly showing the coloring she completed. Calix and Leslie peppered her small face with kisses, enticing giggles from the little dumpling.
Their laughter harmonized together, imbuing the air with their love and care for each other. The huge manor wasn’t as quiet and deserted as before anymore.
As the time approached a little over nine, Calix and Leslie brought Calliope to her bedroom. She sang to children’s songs while hugging Mimo, happy to end her day by sleeping on her adorable hut-shaped bed.
"Good night, my darling..."
"Sleep well, Papa’s buttercup."
Giggling, Calliope squirmed under Leslie and Calix’s rain of kisses.
"Night night, Mama and Papa~"
Calix switched on the fairy lights adorning Calliope’s bed before turning off the main lights. He also played her favorite lullaby through the tulip-shaped music box, letting the soft melody envelop the little one’s sleep.
Calliope snuggled with Mimo and the giant crochet strawberry on the bed. The faint orange lights cast a glow on her small frame. Her face was slightly obscured by her bangs.
Calix pushed Leslie’s wheelchair to the bedroom across the hallway. None of them spoke until he helped her to the bed.
"Your knees... are they fine now?"
Leslie’s random question stunned Calix. Understanding what she meant, he chuckled. He sat on the edge of the bed after laying her down.
"Just some bruises, nothing much ah."
Calix was ashamed whenever he recalled what happened last night. He ran to Leslie as soon as he saw her, even pulling her into his embrace without asking her.
Sensing Calix’s reluctance to talk about the previous night’s issue, Leslie sighed inwardly. Still, she had something else to ask him.
Leslie stretched out a hand, lightly touching the back of Calix’s. Their gaze met one another, both expressing different feelings in their eyes.
"Will you be okay if you sleep... alone?"
Frozen in shock, no words slipped out between Calix’s lips.
