Chapter 327: The One Woman Who Occupied His Heart

’I was dying... I was...’

Calix’s uneven breathing resounded faintly in the bedroom. He was still sitting on the mattress, trying to digest the terror he had just experienced in the dream.

Sweat soaked the entirety of Calix’s back as his body continued to shiver in fear. His pupils were unfocused, his mind inevitably recalled the horrifying nightmare.

’I can’t believe this...’

Rubbing his face hard, Calix reluctantly replayed the frightening scene of him plummeting through the air before his back struck a sharp boulder. He faintly caught the anguished echo of Franz’s screaming in horror, desperately calling his name.

The owner of this body’s name, the one Calix had been trying to find out. Unfortunately, Franz’s calling was muted by the horror of plunging down the ridge.

Calix’s misery didn’t end by simply falling.

He continued bouncing and rolling down the cliff before eventually stuck between two rocks. His limbs twisted at unnatural angles. The oozing blood from the back of his head matted his hair, mixing with dirt.

’It’s so painful... So... painful...’

With his ribs broken, Calix struggled to breathe even a little. A sharp pain flared out to his entire body.

Calix painstakingly tried to keep what was left of his consciousness but, his blurry vision darkened at the edges.

’I was dying and... I remembered her...’

Sensing the Grim Reaper was closely approaching him to bear the news of his death, memories and regrets flooded Calix’s mind.

All of them were centered around the unfamiliar woman in the small apartment.

He thought of the things he hadn’t said to her.

He worried about her reaction after learning about his demise.

He was concerned about her life alone after he was gone.

And Calix knew. He knew all this sorrow stemmed from his genuine feelings for the woman.

’Please... please let her be safe. Please let her be happy!’

’I can’t come back to her. I can’t...’

’Our promises... Our future... Erase me from her heart... if that’s what it takes to make her happy...’

The thoughts roared at the back of his mind as his consciousness continued to fade. The voice belonged to him, not Calix.

The vibrant autumn palettes seemed to darken and the echoes of the forest muted. His vision narrowed to a tunnel as the woman’s smiling image was conjured in his mind.

’May you be happy. May you not be lonely without me.’

Breathing his last, he curved up his lips, wanting to welcome death with a smile despite his heart stricken with sorrow.

’My love... my only love...’

The one woman who occupied his heart.

’I pray to be with you again... in our next life... I hope...’

Do you want to reunite with your lover?

The unfamiliar child-like voice echoed above the faint whisper of the wind. A blurry figure in reddish orange color appeared in his blurry line of sight. The shade reminded him of the autumn foliage.

’Who...’

Why did the silhouette seem familiar to him?

What if I lead her to you in the distant future? Across the dimensions?

’How?’

Calix heard the man’s inner voice asking the mysterious figure. He couldn’t help but wonder what kind of answer the entity had.

By sacrificing your...

Unfortunately, Calix couldn’t hear the rest of the mystifying figure’s words. He was jolted awake by the nightmare.

Instead of dreading the arrival of his death, he found himself back in his childhood bedroom. He no longer bore sharp pain with every intake of his breath but, the fear remained clawing into his heart.

Insane... The dream felt insanely real.

Calix really thought he would die!

’What was that... Really, who... who were they?’

Distraught and frustrated by the terrifying nightmare, Calix pushed the blanket away. He dragged himself out of the bed before rushing to the washroom. His hurried footsteps drowned the faint breathing that came from the bed.

After switching on the lights, Calix paused by the door. The erratic beating of his heart sent buzzing sounds to his ears.

’...my face. It’s my face, isn’t it?’

Shivers and dread made his hands shaky and cold, Calix touched his face. He took one step forward, hesitantly approaching the mirror hanging above the washbasin.

Calix saw his face instead of the man’s in the dreams.

’I look fine... No blood or anything...

Despite his hair and body being soaked in sweat, Calix found no traces of dirt and blood sticking to him. He blinked, not sure what he should feel right now.

’Absurd... this is too absurd...’

Calix tapped on the faucet handle, letting water run out from the spout. A heavy sigh rolled out of his mouth.

Still disturbed by the terror of the nightmare, Calix splashed the cool water a few times on his face, inevitably drenching the upper part of his pajamas. His gaze was clouded by the lingering fear.

"Haa... haa..."

Grasping the edge of the sink countertop, Calix breathed in and out repeatedly. Even though his rib didn’t shatter like in the dream, the agonizing torture still left invisible marks on him.

The veins popped up on the back of his cold hands. Droplets of water dripped from his hair and face, further wetting his nightwear.

’Who were they? Who... did they even exist? Absurd. This is too absurd! I have to...’

"Calix?"

The familiar mellow voice gently cut through the darkness looming in his mind, bringing him back to reality.

"Calix... are you alright?"

The voice echoed again, carrying genuine concern along.

Stunned, Calix’s eyes regained focus. Staring at the mirror, his eyes widened at the sight of Leslie appearing at the door.

She... she was here? Did she see him? His pathetic self?

The lights of the bathroom cast a glow on Leslie’s countenance. She stopped her wheelchair just right outside the door. The bedroom behind her shoulders was still dark.

"Les... Leslie.. Leslie!."

"...Calix?!"

Driven by his heart instead of his rational thinking, Calix rushed to Leslie.

Dropping his knees hard on the floor, he hastily wrapped his arms around her frame, frantic to feel her warmth when he was still fighting his fear.

"Leslie... Leslie..."

Perplexed by Calix’s action, Leslie’s mind thought of the worst. She sensed how his body trembled out of fright, something she rarely felt coming from him.

The dampness of his pajamas soaked into her dry nightgown. The cool sensation brought an eerie feeling to her.

But...

Instead of asking what was wrong with Calix, Leslie returned the man’s desperate hug. She ran her fingers through his soaked hair, her other palm gently patting his broad back.

"Yes, I’m here... I’m here, Calix..."

She was here.
