Chapter 326: Rolling Hills Dyed in Autumn Colors
Calix didn’t expect to receive a continuation of the dream because he hadn’t experienced it in the past few days. When he opened his eyes, he found himself standing opposite a stove and stirring a pot of soup.
’Why did this happen again?’
Staring at the bubbles popping on the soup, Calix couldn’t help but think how bizarrely real these dreams were. He also discovered some changes that didn’t happen in his first one.
In the first dream, Calix could act freely in moving or speaking. But, in the following ones, he felt as if someone else controlled his body despite still being able to think himself.
For example, what he was currently experiencing in this dream.
"Honey, your jacket’s dry already. Perfect for your trip tomorrow."
The familiar voice of the unfamiliar woman echoed from behind. Calix turned around and smiled fondly at her, an action not driven by his own instincts.
"Thank you, sweetheart. I forgot to do it yesterday."
Calix heard the foreign voice coming from his mouth, thanking the lady with affection brimming in his tone.
Giggles spilled out of the woman’s mouth, the melody resonating in his ears. He perceived earnest joy in her simple laughter.
Stepping closer to Calix, the woman grabbed his left arm before leaning on him. The intimate gesture made him uneasy but, he couldn’t push her away even if he wanted to.
He had no control over this body!
But, this was not the most terrifying part.
’Snap out of it, Calix! Remember your wife!’
Calix was direly frightened by the faint comfort beneath his discomfort toward the woman’s affectionate touch. Despite being aware this feeling was due to this body’s heart, he refused to be carried away by it.
She was not his wife!
His wife was Leslie!
Someone! Woke him up from this dream!
The woman tilted up her chin, smiling at Calix. She didn’t know even the slightest of what was going on in the man’s mind.
"Did you get me some dried plum? Hehe, I don’t mind the mango ones too."
As usual, Calix automatically parted his lips to respond to the woman. His tone toward her was always mellow, imbuing with tenderness.
"I got you dried plum, mango and papaya. I bought some candied lemon peels too. Hey, aren’t you eating too many sour snacks these days?"
Hearing the man’s answer, the woman stifled her laughter. Her cheeks flushed with a faint hint of pink. She playfully pinched his arm.
"Hehe, what’s wrong with that, en? I’ve gotten bored of other snacks."
Calix looked at the way the woman’s eyes glimmered in delight. She appeared so happy even when they were just talking about simple and cheap snacks.
"I’m afraid your tummy will hurt ah. Eat properly when I’m away, okay? I’ll return the day after tomorrow. Let’s have a picnic together this weekend?"
The woman perked up. She eagerly nodded, her joy reflected in her eyes.
"Okay, honey~ All the leaves have turned orange ah. We have to enjoy the peak autumn! Should we go to the lake park?"
"Sure. We can go boating too. Don’t you like it, sweetheart?"
Once again the woman’s melodic laughter echoed in the small kitchen, tickling his heart effortlessly.
"Is the soup ready, honey? I’m hungry."
"Hehe, are you really that hungry ah? Okay, my queen. Just a little bit."
Calix watched himself stirring the soup again. The woman released his arm, saying she would set up the tables and scoop some rice into the bowls.
’When will I wake up? I don’t want to stay here longer.’
Calix inwardly exhaled a sigh of frustration. He really wished this dream would come to an end soon, and also to stop bothering him.
’What’s the reason I keep dreaming... of this woman? I feel weird to know I’m in someone else’s body too.’
Calix didn’t know where in the world this place was. During the times he dreamed of going out with the lady, he could tell their cultures and languages were the exact ones in his home country.
’I also don’t know their names. How can I try looking for them?’
The lady and the man only used endearments when addressing each other.
Calix wanted to pry for info but, it was impossible when the body didn’t abide by his wishes. He wondered if these nonsensical dreams would end if he found them in real life.
’...en? W-what? Where am I?’
In the blink of an eye, Calix found himself in a different scenery and place altogether. Instead of being in a small kitchen while cooking a pot of soup, he was currently trekking up the hills of a forest.
’Is this the trip they’re talking about?’
Calix remembered what the woman had told him just now. It seemed like he jumped into a day or two in the future.
’I think this area is near the peak.’
From where he stood, Calix could see the rolling hills dyed in autumn colors. He assumed this place was far from the city because he didn’t see any skyscrapers from this height.
"ARGH! Help!"
The shrieking shout froze Calix. He didn’t have a moment to digest what was happening as his body moved on its own, sprinting toward the scream. The soles of his boots crushed the dried leaves littering the forest floor.
"F-Franz!"
Calix yelled the name, another unfamiliar one. He saw a young man—Franz—dangling from the cliff. The latter might slip on his steps and lose his balance.
Franz firmly held to a nearby tree, anchoring himself there. He lifted one of his legs, trying to climb up. Small rocks tumbled down the cliff, falling beyond what one’s eyes could see.
"Haha... I’m okay... Just grab me."
Franz’s lips broke into a helpless smile. No longer screaming for help, he didn’t show an obvious look of panic on his face.
"Let me get you up."
Bending down, Calix grabbed Franz as the latter tried clambering up. More small rocks fell down the cliff. Being bigger and bearing a huge load on his back, it was quite difficult to help Franz.
"Slow... slowly... Lift your foot..."
His breathing ragged, Franz did as he was told. The sprain of his left ankle limited his movements. Calix did his best to pull the young man up but, this body didn’t possess the same stamina as his.
"One... two... A bit more! Yes!"
Franz successfully climbed over the cliff. Panting, he lay on his stomach as Calix stood with both hands on his hips.
"How do you feel? Have any injury?"
"Haa... haa... my left ankle feels..."
"W-watch out!"
Everything happened within a second.
Calix briefly remembered trying to protect Franz from a huge poisonous snake before he slipped, throwing himself over the cliff. His friend’s cries of despair cut through the air before they gradually faded.
