Chapter 324: A Fool in Love
Chapter 324: A Fool in Love
Calix returned to the bedroom not long after Leslie woke up. He was all sweaty and exhausted from the sparring sessions. The back of his shirt was thoroughly soaked.
Andrian and Vernon dragged Calix for another round after he was done telling them the story about Xander and the Li family. Perhaps because some weight had left his chest, he performed better than before.
"No matter what, don’t blindly follow your rage. Plan everything in great detail."
Andrian reminded Calix before they parted ways earlier. Understanding his father’s concern for him, he reassured the older man. Being in a rush might backfire on him.
Calix knew himself. Surviving the fire was an easy feat for him yet, he didn’t want any flicker to hit either Leslie or Calliope.
’Stay composed, Calix. Don’t show anything’s wrong.’
Leslie was quite a perceptive lady. Calix recalled the past few times when she discerned his feelings and subtly asked if something was bothering him.
Despite knowing Leslie was never judgmental, Calix still wanted to show only his best self to her. He wanted to be a sturdy tree for her.
For her to take shelter under his canopy of leaves.
For her to lean on his solid trunk.
Pausing in front of the closed door, Calix let out a sigh. He uttered under his breath, "I act like a fool now."
A fool in love.
Calix laughed at himself. After shaking his head twice, he quietly opened the door, revealing the short corridor leading to the inside of the room.
"Ah! Is that Papa?"
Calliope’s voice echoed from the inner part of the chamber. She heard the sound of the door being opened, followed by Calix’s footsteps.
"Eh, Poppy? Poppy, when did you come here?"
Surprised to hear his daughter’s voice, Calix quickened his pace.
Stepping further inside the bedroom, Calix didn’t expect to see Calliope cuddling with Leslie on the bed. He thought the little dumpling was still napping with his grandmother.
"Poppy come to find Mama," Calliope giggled. Still lying on the bed, she waved at Calix with her short hands, "Papa, come and sleep?"
Calix approached the bed. He grabbed a few tissues from the bedside table. Wiping the remains of his sweat, he said, "Papa needs to take a shower first. Let’s have tea time with Great-Grandma and everyone later, okay?"
"Okay~"
Calliope’s face brightened. She couldn’t resist imagining all kinds of desserts she could eat during tea time.
Old Madam Xu informed everyone through their family’s group chat. She wanted them to gather inside the pavilion by the pond for tea time.
"When did you wake up? Slept well?"
Calix shifted his attention from Calliope to Leslie. He crumpled the tissues into a ball before throwing it into a dustbin by the bedside table.
"I slept well. Poppy’s already here when... I woke up..." Leslie smiled at Calix. She propped herself up to sit on the bed, "How was your sparring? Did you... enjoy it?"
CEO Xu’s hair was messy, mostly due to the intense sparring sessions. Leslie also saw traces of exhaustion marring his flushed countenance.
Frowning, Leslie said worriedly, "Take a shower and have a nap... Aren’t you tired?"
Calix had been awake from early morning. No matter how fit he was, Leslie still couldn’t help but be concerned about him.
"Hehe, I’ll do that. I wanna get a shut eye before tea time."
Calix chuckled hearing the tone of worry coming from Leslie. He quickly headed to the ensuite washroom, leaving Leslie and Calliope in bed.
"Mama, Papa tired?" asked Calliope once Calix disappeared in the bathroom. Hugging Mimo, she kept staring at the door.
"He might be... Your papa played a lot with your grandpa... and uncle... Poppy, wanna read... a book before Papa comes out? Your grandma... got them for you..."
Harper bought a few children’s storybooks for Calliope. She put them inside Calix’s childhood bedroom before their arrival. Calliope hadn’t seen the books because she directly went to Old Madam Xu’s bedroom after lunchtime.
"Wow! New books? From Grandma?"
Calliope’s eyes twinkled with stars. She perked up as soon as she heard about the storybooks despite being unable to read everything yet.
Calliope’s reaction earned laughter from Leslie. Extending both arms to the bedside table, she took all of the storybooks. They had been lying on the table.
"Thank your grandma later... okay?"
"Okay! Wow! Looks so fun ah!"
Sitting together on the bed, Leslie let Calliope pick which storybooks she wanted to read first. Her ears caught the faint sound of water splashing on the washroom’s floor.
"This one, Mama. The Moon... Goddess’ Bunny Friend."
Calliope slowly read the titles printed on the storybook. She was attracted to the illustration of an adorable white bunny sitting on a celestial maiden’s lap.
"Want Mama to read the story or... Poppy wanna try reading it first?" asked Leslie, curious about Calliope’s choice.
"Hehehe~ Poppy read first!"
According to Director Li, Calliope was a fast learner. Despite not being forced to focus solely on the academic area because of her young age, the little one had always loved reading.
Charlene’s Calliope was just similar to Leslie’s Calliope. Both children enjoyed reading books.
Leslie quietly listened to Calliope narrate the story. She assisted when the little dumpling stuck somewhere. Overall, Calliope’s reading skills were fluent for a child her age.
’Should I send Poppy to a kindergarten?’
The thought crossed Leslie’s mind as she was reminded of their previous life.
Calliope attended a kindergarten from age four instead of only being in a daycare. She loved to learn and play together with her young friends. The teachers also only had good opinions about her.
’Surely, Poppy can’t go to an ordinary kindergarten now.’
Considering the Xu family’s background and the circumstances behind Calliope’s birth, Leslie knew her daughter wouldn’t enroll in a common kindergarten.
’Let’s talk about it with Calix later. And... I haven’t told her about Evelyn.’
Caught in a trance, Leslie pondered about the vision she got regarding Evelyn’s unfortunate event in the near future.
When would it happen?
