Chapter 315: Did You Hit Your Head Somewhere?
Understanding he wouldn’t ever get any rational answer for the uncanny continuous dreams, Calix decided to disregard them. He also deliberately ignored the nagging feeling that insisted there was something deeper behind those dreams.
’The woman and... that man.’
Calix wondered why he saw another man’s face whenever he tried looking into a mirror in the dream. Unfortunately, there was no answer.
’I can’t possibly talk to Leslie about this, right?’
Calix shuddered at the thought of telling Leslie about him dreaming of another woman three nights straight. He couldn’t imagine what kind of face she would show him once he did.
Disdain? Or, amused?
Nevertheless, wouldn’t this set him up for failure in wooing her?
He wouldn’t ever want that!
Even though Leslie was just his wife on paper, Calix wished to change it soon. He hoped she continued to stay with him not only for Calliope’s sake but because she reciprocated his feelings for her.
If not...
He had to let her go. He didn’t want to bind her to a marriage where her heart didn’t belong.
"Haa... What am I thinking now?"
Exhaling a heavy sigh, Calix rubbed his face with his wide palms. Drowsiness hit him again, luring him to enter dreamland once more.
’Ah... Let’s sleep. Dreaming or not, I need sleep.’
Calix dragged himself to the three-seater couch in the home office. Lying on the huge divan, he let the lights brighten the room instead of switching them off. His contorted eyebrows gradually eased as he drifted to sleep.
Much to his relief, the dream didn’t disturb his sleep this time.
Days passed by as the week went on smoothly.
Calix was preoccupied with some of his work despite still being on leave. He often had calls with Andrian, talking about the current affairs of the company.
Edward regularly visited Graceville Manor. The young man didn’t forget to bring something for Calliope every time he came.
Edward had been gaining brownie points from Calliope through the small gifts, annoying Calix in the process.
Leslie resumed her rehab sessions after neglecting them in the past week. Despite exhausting her as always, her new progress fueled her heart to persevere. Her therapists predicted she could start walking by using crutches in two weeks.
Calliope had settled in wonderfully in the manor. She had started sleeping alone in her princess bedroom but, not without receiving good night kisses from Leslie and Calix. She also often requested bedtime stories.
In these few days, Calliope hadn’t remembered every nook and cranny of the huge mansion but, her adventurous spirit resolved the particular problem.
Still, Calix gifted Calliope a cute watch with a tracker to prevent the little dumpling went missing.
"Don’t go hiding in a tree hole like before, okay?[01]"
Calix’s reminder was responded to with a cheeky promise from Calliope. Leslie was aware of the backstory behind his words.
"Poppy won’t do it anymore ah~ Papa, get white hairs if Papa worries so much."
Calix was speechless. He didn’t expect his young daughter to mention about him having gray hair.
Sigh.
At the same time, Calix and Leslie came up with the decision to introduce Calliope formally to the Xu family. After talking to Old Madam Xu, Andrian and Harper, they settled on this coming Saturday.
The family of three would head to the Xu family’s ancestral home in the morning, planning to stay the night. Everyone would gather for a family lunch, including the busy Evelyn.
Calix personally contacted Vernon and Evelyn to tell them about Calliope; her existence and background. To say they were shocked was an understatement.
"Hahaha! I’ve never thought you’d have a secret child ah! And she’s older than my Mia! Good going ah, my younger brother!"
"W-what? Second Brother, are you trying to fool me? Why does your story sound like the drama I used to star in ah? Second Brother, did you hit your head somewhere?"
Calix didn’t know whether to laugh or cry hearing how Vernon and Evelyn responded to him. Thankfully, their grandmother and parents clarified his story to his siblings.
By now, Lucille and Amelia also had heard about Calliope. Vernon told Calix how excited Amelia was to meet her new cousin. Calliope also felt the same.
Soon, Friday arrived. The day of the family lunch was tomorrow.
"Mama, wanna take a nap?"
After rolling on Leslie’s bed, Calliope stopped to lay on her tummy while hugging Mimo. A storybook was wide open in front of her.
Leslie also lay on the bed right next to Calliope. They went to the former’s room after having lunch together with Calix. He was out making a phone call to Edward.
"Is Poppy sleepy? You shall nap ah... You haven’t taken one yet today..."
She reached out a hand, gently sweeping her daughter’s bangs from obscuring her small face. Giggles spilled out of the little munchkin’s mouth.
"Mama, want Poppy to sing a lullaby for Mama?"
Calliope’s cheeks reddened, flushing in excitement as she suggested that. Her words enticed Leslie to laugh.
"Hehehe, okay~ Sing a lullaby for Mama..."
Calliope immediately sat up before jumping on the bed. Standing on her two small feet and hugging Mimo, she pretended to cough.
"Ehem! Ehem! Poppy will sing a lullaby for Mama so Mama has good dreams."
After finishing her words, Calliope began to sing. Her milky voice echoed in the bedroom, entertaining Leslie further as she enjoyed watching her daughter singing.
Ring! Ring!
Leslie’s attention shifted from Calliope to her phone. Wondering who it would be, she grabbed the sleek metal from the bedside table. Her eyes widened once she saw the Caller ID.
"...Irene?"
It was not a rare occurrence to get a call from Irene. But, Leslie had a bad feeling today. She remembered how she ended up blocking Rowan and Bianca’s numbers a few days ago.
Was this a normal phone call? Or, would Irene mention those two people?
"Mama, who calls Mama?"
Calliope paused from singing. Landing on her knees, she crawled to Leslie while dragging Mimo along.
Leslie moved her eyes from the screen to Calliope. She silenced the call before saying, "Poppy, can we play hush-hush?"
"Play hush-hush?" Calliope repeated, wondering what kind of game her mama wanted to play.
"Yes..." Leslie nodded, smiling at the little one, "Poppy keeps quiet when Mama... talking on the phone, can you?"
"Okay!"
Calliope hurriedly covered her mouth with both hands. Her funny antics eased a little of Leslie’s worries. She returned her gaze to her phone.
Irene’s call was still showing on the screen.
Slightly shaking her head, Leslie finally accepted the call.
"Hello, Irene..."
Did she bear some news?
