Chapter 304: Let Them Suffer Slowly

Chapter 304: Let Them Suffer Slowly

Calliope ended up choosing the yarn balls in colors red, hot pink, green and white. Calix included some other items including a big bag of cotton stuffing in their purchases.

"You don’t want anything, Leslie?" asked Calix once more before paying for all of the items.

Smiling, Leslie lightly shook her head, "Yes... Just buy them for Poppy..."

Not wanting to pressure Leslie in this mundane matter, Calix nodded. While paying for the purchases, he conversed with the shopkeeper. It seemed like he was on good terms with the middle-aged lady.

"Mr. Xu has always come alone before. I didn’t expect this handsome young man to already have a beautiful wife and a cute daughter. It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Xu."

The shopkeeper friendly greeted Leslie as she put everything in a huge paper bag. She also handed a stalk of crochet tulip to Calliope as a gift, earning a sweet thank-you from the child.

"It’s nice to meet you too, madam..." Leslie returned the greeting with a smile. She looked at the shopkeeper standing behind the counter, "Your store is pretty... Our daughter loves it so much..."

"Yes! Poppy likes it!" Calliope chimed in. Giggling, she happily hugged the crochet tulip alongside Mimo, "So many pretty things~"

"This old lady is honored to hear that," replied the shopkeeper, delighted to receive such a positive response from the mother and daughter, "Feel free to drop by again."

"We will..."

"Granny, bye-bye~"

"We’ll take our leave now. See you again, madam."

The shopkeeper waved at the family of three before she attended to the next customer. Calix, Leslie and Calliope left the craft supply store behind, heading straight to Graceville Manor.

"Aunt Wendy, please wash the bedsheet sets. They’re for Poppy’s bedroom."

Calix told Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond about a group of painters coming tomorrow. The housekeeper began planning which dishes to serve to the labor workers. They might stay until late afternoon.

"Sleep... Poppy’s sleepy..."

Calliope climbed on the bed as soon as she changed out of her dress. She kept Mimo and the tulip close to her.

Calix and Leslie let the little one continue napping. They had been out from the early morning. Now the clock pointed to ten minutes after three.

"Will you start now? The strawberry crochet?"

Leslie watched Calix taking the yarn balls and the stuffing out of the paper bag. Sitting on the couch, the man put everything on the coffee table in her bedroom. He hadn’t returned to his own chamber yet.

"Maybe tomorrow," Calix lifted his gaze from the craft items, smiling at Leslie on the bed, "You should take a nap too. Aren’t you tired?"

"A little bit..." Leslie sighed in helplessness. She glanced at Calliope who had already entered her slumber, "Oh... when will we tell Poppy... about your family?"

None of them mentioned anything about each other’s family to Calliope. Their initial plan was to introduce the little dumpling to Calix’s immediate family. They agreed not to include the Li family aside from Irene.

"Poppy settles in better than we expected," Calix smiled in relief. Rising to his feet, he approached the bed, "I think she’ll be happy to meet her grandparents and all."

Calix was speaking the truth. Leslie had to thank the strong affinity linking her to Calliope for this matter.

The little one was confused at scared in the beginning but, it didn’t take her a long time to be affectionate with her recently found parents.

"We can show their photos to... Poppy tonight..." Leslie reached for the blanket covering Calliope’s small body. She smoothened the fabric before gently patting the child, "And tell her about them..."

"Yes, let’s do that."

Calliope hadn’t heard about Old Madam Xu, Andrian, Harper and everyone else. But, Calix had already told his grandmother and parents everything related to the child.

Sitting on the bed, Calix brought up his phone. He told Leslie, "I’ll share today’s photos with Grandma. Hehe, she’ll be excited ah."

Leslie simply replied with a smile. She was happy to see the beaming look on Calix’s countenance.

Despite couldn’t contain her excitement to meet Calliope, Old Madam Xu still respected Calix and Leslie’s arrangement. Andrian and Harper also felt the same.

The three people showed support to the husband and wife from afar, wishing their long-lost daughter to accept them easily.

"I wonder when should we include Irene..."

Calix looked up from his phone, finding a trace of worry on Leslie’s face.

"Irene will be stressed if we tell her to keep Calliope secret," Calix frowned, thinking back to his young sister-in-law, "We need to confront your parents before we tell her."

Nodding, Leslie shared the same sentiment as Calix, "Yeah... I don’t want them to think... they can include themselves in Poppy’s life..."

Rowan and Bianca might have their reasons behind their actions but, Leslie wouldn’t accept them anymore. Despite being older than Charlene, they still let the evil Old Madam Li lead them by their noses.

Charlene was too good, too naive to ask Leslie to forgive her parents on her behalf.

Leslie agreed with Calix’s plan to hit the Li family where they hurt the most, their wealth. Letting them suffer slowly was even better.

Calix was uncomfortable to see Leslie worrying about the evil scum. He whispered, "Don’t think about them. You’ll just have a nightmare ah."

Leslie chuckled, throwing the words back to Calix, "Like you always have nightmares... about Grandma scolding you?"

"...ouch."

Bursting out laughing, Leslie covered her mouth. She didn’t want to disturb Calliope’s sleep.

"I’ll go back to my room. Should we have teatime at the deck?"

"Poppy will like it, sure..."

Calix told Leslie to take a nap before stepping out of the bedroom. Even if he actually wanted to lie with his wife and daughter together, he didn’t want to make Leslie uncomfortable.

Step by step, yes.

The family of three spent the rest of the daytime in happiness. Unfortunately, trouble came knocking on the door at nighttime.
