Chapter 281: I’m a Monk Without Worldly Desires
Unable to come up with a better reply, Calix quietly accepted the arrangement. Leslie was tempted to roll her eyes but, she ended up ignoring the man. She was too sleepy to care about him anymore.
Leslie grabbed the blanket, covering it up to her neck. Closing her eyes, she murmured, "You can sleep on the floor... if you think I’ll harm you..."
"..."
Calix looked at Leslie in disbelief. She seemed to be so much at ease while he was being so nervous instead.
Inwardly shaking his head, he couldn’t help but wonder if she hadn’t seen him as a man at all.
Was it because she trusted him very much?
Or, did he actually lose against the male leads in her favorite stories?
Calix refrained from sighing out loud. Just thinking about the second possibility annoyed him. He would protest if Leslie dared to say she liked the fictional men more.
Should he start her plan to woo her soon?
What should he do ah? Just follow the examples from the cheesy romance stories?
Hurm... who should he consult about this?
Shaking his head, Calix stared at Leslie for a moment longer before he turned around to get his change of clothes. His sleepiness had slowly crept in. Playing with the children for the entire day consumed his energy.
But, could he sleep well?
Sigh... Let’s just hope he won’t have a sleepless night ah. He didn’t want to wake up with panda eyes. Leslie might make fun of him tomorrow.
"I’ll go to the washroom first," said Calix quietly after picking a set of pajamas and a towel. Throwing a look at Leslie, he found her peacefully lying on the bed, "...sleep well."
"En, good night..." whispered Leslie, barely audible in the quiet room.
Clamping his mouth shut, Calix hurriedly left the guest room. His hastiness was expressed by his quick footsteps, earning a chuckle from Leslie.
"Silly..."
What a foolish man ah.
Leslie didn’t actually care whether Calix would use the bed for sleeping or not. He was a grown-up man already. She simply wanted to tease him about the sudden arrangement.
Hehehe~
’We’ll head home with Poppy tomorrow.’
Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond were all excited to welcome Calliope to Graveville Manor. Old Madam Xu, Andrian and Harper felt the same but, they held back from meeting the little one until the right time.
If Calliope got to settle in comfortably earlier than expected, Leslie and Calix planned to slowly introduce their daughter to the elders, followed by Vernon, Lucille, Amelia and Evelyn.
’Irene will be happy too.’
The image of Irene flashed in Leslie’s mind. She wouldn’t mind getting Calliope to know the high school girl but, not Rowan and Bianca, including the rest of the Li family.
’Baby steps, yeah. Let’s take it slowly.’
The important thing was her daughter was already in her arms.
Leslie was already deep in sleep by the time Calix returned from the washroom. A pair of dusty green lined pajamas replaced his outfit from before. His bangs covered his forehead, slightly wet from the shower.
Crossing both hands over his chest, Calix sized up the half-unoccupied space of the mattress. He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry seeing Leslie slept so well already.
She looked so unbothered as if she didn’t care about them sharing a small bed together.
’The bed or the floor? But...’
Even though CEO Xu was used to sleeping on a giant and comfy luxurious mattress, it didn’t mean he couldn’t sleep on an ordinary and cheap one. He had survived sleeping on a rocky mountain path once because he forgot to bring his sleeping bag.
The only problem was...
Calix’s gaze returned to the sleeping Leslie.
Should he tie himself up just in case he dared to hug her when sleeping?
Slap!
"Cut the crap ah, Calix."
Slapping himself once, Calix forced himself to regain his composure. He chanted some mantras before switching off the lights.
The bed! He chose the bed instead of the floor!
Using the light trail from the curtain gaps, Calix ever so carefully and slowly climbed on the bed. He was afraid to make even the tiniest creaking sound.
’Two blankets!"
Calix was grateful for the two blankets prepared by the orphanage staff despite knowing he and Leslie were a married couple. He didn’t dare to get under the same blanket with her.
Lying very close to the edge of the bed, Calix tightly wrapped himself in the blanket. He grasped the cloth covering his body, afraid of his hands moving toward the sleeping Leslie.
’Sleep, sleep, come to me. Sleep like a rock. Sleep like a rock. Don’t move.’
Calix tried to close his head, getting his well-deserved sleep but, Leslie’s light breathing sounded so audible in his ears. He was conscious of the lack of space between them despite having already spent so much time holding her on a daily basis.
’...why she smells so good tonight ah? Ouch!’
Calix pinched himself, trying not to let his thoughts go astray. Closing his eyes, he coerced himself to recall the boring scriptures he was forced to learn when he was younger.
...creak.
"Huh?"
Gasping, Calix surreptitiously glanced to where Leslie was sleeping. His heart almost jumped to his throat once he saw her lying on her side, facing him. Her bangs fell over her forehead, slightly obscured her upper face.
Calix froze on his spot. Holding his breath, he quietly peered into Leslie’s countenance. He tightened his held on the blanket, fighting against the desire to reach out for her.
’Don’t shoot yourself in the foot. Don’t. You don’t want to fail before even starting ah.’
Calix’s inner demon persuaded him to stroke Leslie’s hair and face. Even if she woke up, he could feign ignorance by pretending to move in his sleep.
But, Calix’s inner angel kept shouting into his ears, scaring him with the possibility of Leslie distancing herself from him if she was suspicious of his claims.
’No! Resist! I have to resist!’
Calix turned his head toward the other way. He resumed chanting the scriptures, pretending he didn’t feel how close Leslie was to him.
’I’m a monk. I’m a monk. I’m a monk without any worldly desires, yes.’
While Leslie continued sleeping peacefully, a certain CEO Xu recalled his one-hour childhood dream of being a monk at the mountain temple his grandmother visited.
