Chapter 260: Under the Fluttering Begonia Petals

"Hey, hey, what are you guys talking about?"

Calix’s voice pulled Leslie out of her trance. Lifting her chin, she saw the man returning with another bowl full of water.

"We’re talking about the boats..." replied Leslie in a half-truth, not intending to bring up about Calliope’s drowning incident to Calix, "Should we go... boating later?"

"It’s a must! Before that, wash your hands ah. Are you gonna play with the soap?"

Calix glanced at Leslie’s hands slimy with the citrusy soap bubbles. He made a face, acting as if he was looking at a naughty child.

Raising her hands slowly, Leslie threatened, "Wanna taste some of this... soap?"

"No, thanks."

Calix scoffed, immediately rebutted Leslie’s threat. Crouching on the ground, he proceeded to wash her hands with the water.

"Should I just carry you to the faucet?" asked Calix while watching the water dripping down Leslie’s hands, rinsing the bubbles away.

"Hehe, no need... Mr. Xu, you can act... like a butler for me... at times like this..."

Calix rolled his eyes. His action propelled laughter out of Leslie’s mouth.

Calliope just quietly watched the spouses while hugging the toy Mimo. Her little mind started to imagine boating with Calix and Leslie soon.

"Time to eat... Poppy, come here..." Leslie gestured at Calliope to sit closer with her, "Don’t you wanna... try these strawberry roses... first?"

Calliope jumped once, "Want!"

Thus, Calix and Leslie happily entertained Calliope with the picnic food under the blooming begonia petals.

"Yummy! This chicken is yummy!"

"Uncle, how did you roll these ah? All so cute!"

"Here, Auntie~ Eat this sandwich."

"Haa~ Poppy’s tummy is like a ball ah. So full~"

Calix and Leslie were speechless to see how much the little Calliope had eaten. As she tried everything, she couldn’t resist praising the former, even as far as saying Calix’s cooking was heavenly.

Calliope’s sweet talk earned Calix a knowing smile from Leslie. He understood full well what she meant behind her smirk.

Both the father and daughter shared the same wavelength in sweet-talking.

Calix didn’t know whether he should cry or be proud upon this realization. He already imagined the side-eyes thrown at him by his grandmother and youngest sister once they learned about this similarity between him and Calliope.

Haha... He should learn how to counterattack them before it happened.

Ignoring Calix, Leslie shifted her focus to Calliope. She held back the urge to poke her daughter’s round tummy, thinking it was still too early for her to be that touchy with the little one.

"Poppy, you’ve eaten so much ah... Don’t overeat... What if your tummy... hurt later?"

Gasping in shock, Calliope quickly touched her bloating stomach, "No! Poppy no want that!"

Leslie blinked while Calix froze. None of them expected such a reaction from the little glutton.

"No... What if Poppy’s tummy hurts?"

Calliope grimacingly recalled the unpleasant times she overindulged in eating. Her round tummy became as hard as a rock. She couldn’t even sleep in peace as her stomach was in pain.

Amused by Calliope’s funny reaction, Calix exhaled a sigh. He passed a glass of mineral water to the little girl, "Drink slowly. Why don’t we go for a walk? We can continue eating later."

"Yes, yes, let’s take a... stroll..." Leslie nodded, swiftly agreeing with Calix in their effort to comfort the worried Calliope, "Let’s go see the... fountain over there?"

The little Calliope had finished almost half of the food herself. She especially loved gobbling down the strawberry roses, claiming they were very sweet and delicious.

Leslie sighed inwardly. She had momentarily forgotten how much of a glutton Calliope was. She and Calix really needed to make the little one active—at least by walking—to avoid her from having indigestion.

Pouting, Calliope nodded. She scolded herself for losing control in front of the picnic foods. Blinking her watery eyes, she glanced longingly at the rest of the strawberries.

What to do? She wanted to eat them all but, her tummy refused to cooperate ah.

Chuckling, Calix reached out a hand. He patted Calliope’s head a few times.

"No one will steal them from you. Let’s go now. You can have them after we return."

"What if someone takes the strawberries?" asked Calliope, afraid of losing the juicy fruits to someone else.

Even if her tummy said no, her heart still wanted them.

Calix scoffed, amused by the question coming from Calliope. Turning his head in a direction, he replied with a smirk, "No need to worry. We have eyes keeping watch from afar."

"Oh? A guardian angel?" Calliope widened her eyes, awe glimmering in her round eyes.

Calix was speechless. His mind swiftly imagined the bulky Logan dressed in a long white dress, flapping white wings behind. He quickly threw a red-colored cross, shattering the image into pieces.

Urgh... How distasteful.

"Come! Come! Time for a walk!"

Standing up abruptly, Calix clapped his hands twice. They really should start doing other activities instead of just sitting on the mat and eating.

Calliope jumped to her feet while hugging the toy Mimo. As she quietly wore her shoes, Calix helped Leslie to sit in the wheelchair. He didn’t forget to cover the food boxes with their lids back, preventing any flies or whatnot strayed into the containers.

"Poppy, wanna hold hands again?" asked Calix once he made sure Leslie was comfortable in the wheelchair, "We’re going to the fountain."

The fountain was around ten minutes’ walk from their picnic spot. Calix intended to bring Leslie and Calliope further down the road where the rental boat stores were. They had already talked about it earlier.

This lake was wide enough to accommodate its visitors’ boating. The boats glided smoothly on the surface, passing the floating lotuses.

"Uncle, just push Auntie ah. Poppy can walk by myself," responded Calliope with a cheeky smile. She puffed up her chest, trying to make her look bigger than usual.

"Poppy is so reliable..." Leslie grinned. Extending a hand, she gently brushed Calliope’s bangs to the side, revealing her small forehead, "You can walk... in front of us, but... don’t run, okay?"

"Okay~"

Soon, the family of three took their first stroll together. The begonia petals fluttered gently above them, infusing their sweet scent into the passing breeze.
