Chapter 259: Just Like a Loving Pair of Father and Daughter

’We’ll be happy. Always.’

He would shield them with all his might if obstacles came their way, no matter how big or small the barriers were. No one could get away unscathed once they dared to touch this family of his.

"Uncle! Are you a wizard? How can you make this?"

Calliope’s voice with a dose of awe pulled Calix out of his trance. Blinking, he saw the little girl’s eyes kept shifting from the fruits to him. A layer of an unadulterated marvel was cast on her small countenance.

"Hahaha! That doesn’t sound bad," Calix threw his head backward, guffawing at Calliope’s remark, "You can say that ah. Aren’t I a talented wizard?"

"Yes!"

Leslie refrained herself from laughing too much seeing the exchange of words between Calliope and Calix. She could tell the little one’s admiration toward the man continued to grow.

This was nice. Leslie wished Calliope wouldn’t be too apprehensive once she and Calix brought up the major subject of their identities later.

’Even if she rejects us in the beginning, I hope it won’t take her long to warm up to the idea.’

Director Li had prepared Leslie and Calix for Calliope’s possible responses to the news. The little girl might withdraw herself from them suddenly due to the shock. But, it shouldn’t be a long-term issue.

’We’ll try our best. Hopefully, Poppy will accept us easily.’

Leslie still remembered the natural affinity linking him and Calliope, the one mentioned by Mimo before. Because of the bond, the little one was quick to be friendlier to her despite only meeting her recently.

Shaking her head lightly, Leslie returned her focus to Calliope and Calix. The man and the girl were still talking about the strawberry roses. He was clearly praising his own knife-cutting skills.

Aiya, Calix had forgotten what Calliope scolded him for just now. Even the little one seemed too deep in her admiration to care about the man’s self-boasting.

"Won’t you let her... try them?" Leslie chuckled, thinking how much longer Calix intended to brag to Calliope, "Poppy can pluck... the roses herself..."

"Yes, yes!" Calix pushed the cooler box closer to Calliope. Softening his voice, he said, "Pick anything you like. Oh! Don’t forget to wash your hands!"

Calix beckoned Calliope to a garden faucet nearby. The man and the child wore their shoes before both of them half-walked and half-ran to the source of water.

Leslie smilingly watched Calix helping Calliope from afar. The little girl spread her palms, waiting for him to put on some soap. Laughter echoed in their direction as they exchanged jokes.

’Just like a loving pair of father and daughter.’

Something her daughter couldn’t experience in their previous life.

Leslie threw her gaze to the surrounding area. Among the visitors, she spotted several families with young children. All of them seemed to enjoy their time together.

Leslie couldn’t help but imagine how the rest of the day would unfold. Knowing Calix, he wouldn’t simply let any time go to waste without creating more good moments with Calliope.

Leslie wished Calliope would return to the orphanage with a good memory of today’s picnic, hoping it would serve as one of the foundations to build a good relationship with the little one.

"Auntie~ We’re back!"

Calix and Calliope came back within a few minutes. The little one shook her small hands, trying to dry them. Chuckling, Leslie handed some tissues to her.

"Poppy, dry your hands... with these... Oh, don’t litter... okay?"

"Hehe, okay~"

Calix didn’t immediately return to his seat on the mat. He grabbed an empty big bowl from the backpack before heading back to the faucet. He returned shortly with the bowl full of water.

"Leslie, you can wash your hands with this."

Realizing what Calix intended to do with the water, Leslie responded blankly, "Oh, yes... Thanks..."

Leslie scooted toward the edge of the mat while Calix crouched opposite her. He placed another bowl on the ground before pouring water over her hands. The cascading water gathered inside the second bowl.

"Here. Some soap."

"Okay..."

Calix took a small bottle from the inside of his jacket pocket. He squeezed some liquid over Leslie’s palms. A hint of citrus lingered in the air, coming from the soap.

While Leslie rubbed her hands together to lather the soap, Calix went to get more water. Calliope crawled on her palms and feet, stopping just next to the former.

"Auntie, the soap smells like a lemon."

Calliope’s simple words put a smile on Leslie’s face.

"Hehe, do you like it? Or... do you prefer other... scents, Poppy?"

Leslie wondered if Calliope’s preferences had changed. She herself fancied either sweet fruity or light and airy scents.

In the previous world, Leslie didn’t have the heart to splurge on getting the fragrances she desired. Bringing food to the table was more important than the luxury of owning a perfume.

The most Leslie did was buy a cheap one from the drugstore which she used sparingly. As for Calliope, she got her daughter some scented powders safe for children including some fragrant children’s body wash.

Blinking, Calliope tilted her head, thinking about Leslie’s question. She then adorably said, "Poppy likes bubblegum smell. And, chocolate! They smell so yummy!"

Yes. Her daughter’s preferences hadn’t changed.

Calliope really liked such scents. She often cheekily said how those fragrances reminded her of the traditional candy shop near their apartment.

The store was owned by an old lady. The kindhearted grandmother made some of the candies and chocolate herself. Sometimes, she gave the sweets to Calliope for free.

"How about getting them... sometimes?" asked Leslie, the light in her eyes mellowing, "You can use them..."

If Calix learned of this fact, Leslie was sure he would fill Calliope’s future bathroom with various body wash and shampoos in those kinds of scents.

"Can I? Yayy! Thank you, Auntie!"

An excited Calliope sprang toward Leslie, earning more laughter from the lady.

"Hahaha! Careful! You might... get some soap on you."

"It’s fine! Hehehe~"

Chuckling, a thought crossed Leslie’s mind.

Hehe, seemed like they would have fun decorating Calliope’s future bedroom and bathroom soon.

"Oh? The duckies run away."

Calliope’s words earned a smile from Leslie. Following where her daughter’s eyes had shifted to, she saw two boats gliding on the lake opposite their picnic spot.

"Do you wanna go... boating?"

"Oh? Poppy can?" Calliope broke into laughter. She repeatedly nodded her small head, "Let’s go! Auntie, let’s ask Uncle!"

Blinking, Leslie quietly took in the sincere look of excitement on Calliope’s countenance.

Her daughter’s anticipation was genuine. There were no traces of fear could be seen in her bright eyes.

But...

"Poppy, aren’t you... scared? Didn’t you... fall into the water... before?"

Leslie carefully brought up the subject. Her eyes wandered to the toy Mimo as Calix’s and Director Li’s story from before resurfaced in her mind[01].

Calliope—Charlene’s child—fell into a lake when Director Li brought the children to visit a lake park. The little one experienced drowning yet, it seemed like she—her child—showed no signs of fear.

Was it because they were two different souls?

Calliope quickly shook her head. She proudly exclaimed, "No! Not scared ah! Water Fairy helped Poppy, hehe~"

Pursing her lips, Leslie’s brows had a hint of concern and confusion.

Water Fairy.

Who was it?
