Chapter 257: Poppy Will Supervise Uncle!
The gently swaying petals of begonias welcomed Calix, Leslie and Calliope. They were simply a few among the many visitors to the lake park.
A clock tower stood in the middle of a giant fountain of the park. The needles pointed to nine-thirty. Despite still being early, hundreds of people were already there either having picnics, playing games or exercising.
Calix shooed Logan and Mrs. An away, telling them to enjoy themselves for the time being. The bodyguard said he would follow the family of three quietly, a decision agreed to by the private nurse.
As Calix didn’t want to waste any of his time to fight Logan, he just let them be. The bodyguard smirked before asking Mrs. An to follow him into hiding. His words made the private nurse laugh in amusement.
"Leslie, the pathway is quite smooth. Still, be careful ah. Don’t go speeding down the road."
Calix looked at Leslie who maneuvered the wheelchair by herself because both of his hands were occupied. His right one held Calliope’s hand while his left carried the rattan back. He also shouldered a dark gray backpack behind, holding several items for the picnic.
As for Calliope, she didn’t forget to keep hugging the toy Mimo. She wanted to bring it along playing with her soon.
Leslie rolled her eyes, purposely ignoring Calix before pointing at something to Calliope, "Poppy, hold Uncle’s hand tight... lest he’ll run like that child... over there..."
Calliope blinked, looking in the direction of a young boy running ahead of his parents. Bursting into laughter, she repeatedly nodded like a little chick pecking grains.
"Auntie, I will do it! I will supervise Uncle so he won’t run."
Calliope’s reply was met with approval by Leslie while Calix scoffed, side-eyeing the mother and daughter. The two ladies continued laughing, the melody harmonizing with the echoes of other visitors’ chatter and nature.
"Come! Let’s find a place first!" declared Calix.
Thus, the family of three walked down the pathways as they looked for a good picnic spot. They decided to lay the mat near the lake bank, wishing to enjoy the view of the blooming lotus flowers.
The extending branches of the trees provided shade to the visitors. The dazzling sunlight filtered through the rustling leaves, casting dancing shadows on the ground.
Above their heads, the graceful begonias cascading down like a waterfall. The breeze carried the sweet scent of the soft pink and white flowers in the air.
Spotting an area, Calix said while gesturing in a direction, "That place looks good. Do you guys see that tree? Over there ah."
Leslie and Calliope’s eyes wandered to where Calix was pointing.
A begonia tree stood facing the lake. Its branches lengthened toward the body of water, coloring the surface with the reflections of the pastel shades of the flowers.
It was indeed a good place to lay their picnic mat down. Two families occupied the spots nearby.
"Let’s go there..." Leslie agreed. She shifted her eyes toward Calliope, "Poppy, do you want to... see the lotuses... up close? But, be careful..."
"Okay, Auntie. Poppy will listen to Auntie and Uncle. Mimo too!"
Calix chuckled seeing how Leslie and Calliope interacted. Gently tugging at the little one’s hand, he said, "Come. Don’t let anyone else snatch that spot ah."
"Yessir!"
"Okay..."
With a few twists of the controller knob, Leslie effortlessly glided the wheelchair on the grassy field. Calliope stayed close to her as Calix let go of the little one’s hand.
They watched him put down the rattan basket and the backpack by the trunk before taking the picnic mat out of the bag. Unfolding the cloth, he lay the checkered mat right under the tree.
"Let’s have some food before..."
Calliope’s scream cut off the rest of Calix’s words, startling him and Leslie.
"Cute duckies!" exclaimed Calliope whose eyes widened in joy, "Auntie! Uncle! Look at them!"
"...ducks?"
Calix and Leslie threw their eyes toward the lake. They had just noticed several ducks gliding alongside the lotus flowers, letting the water ripple around. Some of them lay still on the lake, seemingly enjoying the passing breeze.
"Wanna take some photos?" suggested Calix. He quickly rose to his feet, bringing his phone out of his pants pocket, "Leslie, Poppy, let’s go nearer ah."
"Poppy, you want it?" Leslie softened her smile, genuinely happy to see the look of pure bliss on Calliope’s countenance, "Be careful ah... Watch your steps..."
"Okay~ Poppy and Mimo take photos!"
"Hey! Don’t run!"
Calliope ran on her short legs, tightly hugging the toy Mimo close to her chest. Calix warned her not to go too near the lake bank as Leslie burst out laughing in amusement.
"Tsk tsk, you’re too energetic," Calix pretended to complain, purposely glaring at Calliope who had reached the bank, "Wait over there. I’m taking your auntie there."
"Uncle, Auntie, hurry ah!"
Calliope stood a few feet away from the bank, waving at Calix and Leslie. The toy Mimo dangled from her right arm. Giggling, she watched the man carrying the lady out of the wheelchair.
"You two should sit here," Calix carefully lowered Leslie to the ground once he reached where Calliope was standing, "I’ll take your photos first."
Calix made sure Leslie and Calliope were in a safe distance from the lake before running away, finding a good place to capture their photos.
While the man fiddled with his phone, the child meekly asked something from the lady.
"Auntie, can Poppy sit in your lap? Oh! Only if Auntie won’t get hurt ah."
Leslie blinked, didn’t see the request coming. Calliope’s hopeful voice brushed her heart. Her two chubby cheeks flushed in the same shade of the begonia flowers.
Leslie didn’t know whether Calliope’s wish had a deeper meaning or not but, she wanted to believe it was due to their invisible bond – of a mother and her precious child.
Raising her arms, Leslie smiled at Calliope. She whispered, "Poppy, come here..."
Calliope’s eyes lit up. Without any hesitation, she dived into Leslie’s arms. None of them noticed the way Calix’s countenance softened at the sight of them hugging each other.
