Chapter 256: A White Canvas to Be Splashed With Brilliant Colors
"Auntie! Uncle! Good morning!"
An excited Calliope welcomed Calix and Leslie to the orphanage. She jumped up and down on her tiny feet, unable to contain her excitement. Her pigtails bounced, dancing along with her movements.
Calliope waited at the small reception area, accompanied by Director Li. She wore a light yellow short-sleeved T-shirt paired with a pastel pink suspender skirt. A white bunny holding a flower bouquet was printed in the middle.
Calix and Leslie decided to enter the orphanage building instead of waiting for Calliope at the van outside.
Logan and Mrs. An were inside the vehicle. They wouldn’t join the picnic with the spouses and the little girl. They simply followed if their presence was needed later, especially for Leslie.
"Good morning, Poppy," Calix waved one hand at Calliope, chuckles slipping out of his mouth, "Did you sleep well last night? Did you dream of eating good food?"
"Hehehe~ Poppy dreamed last night ah! Poppy had a picnic with Mimo and Auntie and Uncle."
Calliope pointed at the toy Mimo sitting on the chair, ready to be brought along. Her small face beamed with pure delight, expressing her childlike innocence.
Like a white canvas waiting to be splashed with myriads of brilliant colors.
"Good morning, Poppy... I hope you’re well too, Director Li..."
Laughing in helplessness, Leslie greeted the overjoyed little turnip head before she did the same to Director Li. The middle-aged woman returned her hello.
"Poppy, listen well to Mr. and Mrs. Xu, alright?" Director Li gently reminded the little one. She brushed Calliope’s bangs, trying to smoothen her hair, "Don’t go running around without telling them."
"Poppy will be careful, Granny," responded Calliope, sweetly, puffing up her chest before slapping it, "Poppy won’t trouble Auntie and Uncle ah. You can trust me."
Laughter burst out within the reception area as the three adults were amused by the child’s reply.
Calliope didn’t know why Calix and Leslie invited her out for a picnic but, her simple mind only focused on enjoying the day with her favorite aunt and uncle. Her friends also told her the same thing.
Director Li patted Calliope’s head, feeling the softness of the child’s hair. She moved her attention to Calix, "Mr. Xu, you need to fill in a form before taking Calliope out. It’s our policy."
"I understand," replied Calix swiftly.
Following Director Li to the reception table, Calix left Leslie and Calliope behind. The two ladies—small and big—exchanged a glance before giggles bubbling up from their mouths.
"Poppy, do you know... where we’re going?" asked Leslie with fondness brimming in her eyes, wishing to have more interaction with Calliope. She inwardly gushed over her daughter’s adorable appearance.
"Granny said that park with many many lotus and begonia flowers~" Calliope burst out laughing, her chubby cheeks puffing in excitement, "Auntie, let’s eat many foods and take many photos ah! With Mimo too!"
Calliope grabbed the toy Mimo from the chair. Smiling cheekily, she held its upper limbs before making it dance in the air.
"Hehe, your Uncle Calix made... the food..." Leslie glanced at Calix at the reception desk, she purposely lowered her voice, "He can cook delicious... foods, you know?"
"Oh?!" Calliope’s mouth gaped open before she quickly shut it. Blinking, she moved closer to Leslie and whispered, "Uncle can cook like Grandpa Mo? Really?"
"Yup! He prepared the food... with you in mind... "
Leslie nodded again, sensing the joy overflowing from her heart as she saw the look of anticipation on Calliope’s little face. She swore the little one almost drooled from imagining the picnic’s food.
"Waa~ I can’t wait ah."
Calix didn’t take a long time to fill in the form. He talked to Director Li while walking back to where Leslie and Calliope were waiting.
"We’ll bring Calliope back before three at least. Our main destination is the park. If there are any changes, I’ll definitely contact you, Director Li."
The lake park—White Jade Lotus Lake Park—was Calix and Leslie’s major focus. They wanted to have fun alone with Calliope having a picnic together before taking the next step of revealing their identities to her.
Calix and Leslie wouldn’t tell Calliope at the park. Perhaps, it would be done tomorrow with Director Li as their mediator. The spouses were trying not to make any missteps at all if possible.
"I understand, Mr. Xu. Please take care of Calliope," replied Director Li with an easy smile, not having much to say.
Her trust in Calix and Leslie stemmed from the cautious way they chose to integrate their presence into Calliope’s life. She was truly grateful because the spouses didn’t jump head in and demand the child to follow them.
Director Li was aware of the immense influence and wealth the Xu spouses yielded. She couldn’t do anything if they intended to go on the harsh route by forcibly taking Calliope away without notice at all.
The spouses really wished their child to warm up to them first much to the older woman’s gratitude.
"Granny, bye-bye~ Poppy will go first."
Calliope waved her right hand to Director Li once she climbed into the executive van. She stood at the car door, her head a few inches away from the ceiling.
"See you later, Poppy," Director Li returned the same gesture, "Remember ah. Don’t go running around without telling Mr. and Mrs. Xu, alright?"
"Hehehe~ Okay!"
"We’ll go now, Director Li," said Calix who was still standing outside the van, "Thank you for your permission."
"See you this afternoon... Director Li," Leslie smiled from the inside. Her seat was on the same row as the open door.
Director Li curled up a smile, "Have a good day, Mr. and Mrs. Xu."
She sincerely wished for it.
The van slowly left the orphanage, leaving Director Li alone. The middle-aged woman kept standing there as she quietly watched the vehicle disappear at an intersection.
"I’ll surely miss Poppy once she returns to her parents," Director Li heaved out a sigh before a chuckle echoed from her mouth, "But, her life will surely be better."
A faint trace of sadness flickered in her eyes, masked by the smile drawn on her lips.
