Chapter 250: To A Certain Degree, He...

Thankfully, CEO Xu was able to return to his usual calm state after a period of self-meditating. Not long after, drowsiness also greeted him, tempting him to sleep.

Turning his head toward the sleeping Leslie, Calix drew a smile on his lips.

He raised one hand slowly, hesitating before softly brushing his fingertips over her bangs. He held back from chuckling at the sight of her eyelashes fluttering. Her lips also moved but, no sound slipped out of them.

’Are you dreaming of something good? Is it food again? You’re hopeless ah.’

Calix tapped Leslie’s forehead lightly before retracting his hand. His eyelids grew heavier.

Despite being nervous about meeting Calliope again, Calix persuaded himself to take a nap. He could function without a decent sleep thanks to years of cultivating that skill but, he was still worried about causing a blunder when dealing with the little one.

’Our daughter. The one we’ve failed to protect.’

Shaking his head, Calix ran one palm over his face. Another thought crossed his mind at the last moment before he fell asleep.

’I failed to protect both. She and our daughter.’

Calix was grateful for being given a chance to right his wrongdoings. Despite understanding what happened was none of his faults, his conscience kept telling him otherwise.

As the man and the lady slept, their even breathing intertwined, faintly echoing in the room. None of them realized how far the sleek metal had been taking them – to the place where their daughter was.

At a little over nine, Calix, Leslie and their entourage arrived at Bridgeland City. The warm yet refreshing weather welcomed their arrival.

Several vans were waiting for the group at the city airport. They were still far from Frostwich Town.

"Boss, should we head to the villa first?" asked Logan as Calix pushed Leslie’s wheelchair toward the waiting executive van. The others were busy handling their own tasks.

Instead of immediately answering the bodyguard, Calix directed a question to Leslie, "Do you wanna go there first? Or, going to the orphanage straightaway?"

Calix wanted to meet Calliope right away but, he still put Leslie’s comfort as his topmost priority. Even though the entire private jet offered absolute convenience, she might not feel it as much as others due to her current condition.

"Let’s go there... The others can go to the... villa..." replied Leslie without pondering much. Her heart desired to have Calliope in her arms more than thinking about her comfort.

"Alright."

Calix instructed Logan to follow their initial plan. The helpers would be brought to their temporary residence while Calix and Leslie traveled to the orphanage.

With no other questions asked, all of them were on the move. Three executive vans drove on the expressways leading to Frostwich Town. They would split once they reached the middle point between the orphanage and the residence.

"It’s Thursday..." muttered Leslie, peeling her gaze away from the car window to Calix by her side, "Calliope, she... is she at kindergarten? Can we... go and pick her up?"

Tilting his head, Calix fondly returned Leslie’s eyes to him. He quietly replied, "Children below six stay at the orphanage when the older kids go to school. They have teachers coming instead."

"Oh! You’ve told me... about it ah.."

Exhaling a sigh, Leslie wondered what made her forget about the information. Calix had already shared it with her before.

"It’s fine. Just look forward to meeting her," Calix kept his gaze on Leslie’s countenance, silently holding back from reaching out for her hands, "Director Li gives us the green light already. We can bring her out tomorrow."

The plan for today was to spend some time at the orphanage with Calliope and the other children. Then, Calix and Leslie would bring the little one out for an outing tomorrow.

Calix didn’t bring any supplies this time because the care home received them twice a week. Edward handled the arrangements by contacting a local warehouse.

The place sold various perishable and non-perishable items. The fixed items brought to the orphanage included food supplies, diapers, hygiene care, milk and laundry detergents.

"I hope she’ll love... going out with us..." Leslie pursed her lips, unable to stop herself from worrying, "She likes visiting water park... or just the ordinary park... I think..."

Leslie intentionally added the last words before ending her sentence. She tried not to make it too obvious how much she knew Calliope’s interests, fearing the perceptive Calix might notice something.

In the previous world, Leslie always brought Calliope to various kinds of parks, especially the ones with free entrance. She tried teaching her daughter they could enjoy life even without spending much money.

Leslie prioritized building up her savings and contributing to their life insurance. Even if something untoward happened to her, at least Calliope’s future was secure.

"We’ll ask her if she has any specific place she wanna go to," Calix softened his voice. Making up his mind, he took one of Leslie’s hands in his, "After all, our priority is making her comfortable with us."

Leslie blinked, glancing at Calix’s broad palm enveloping her small hand. The familiar warmth seeped under her skin, unknowingly finding its way to her heart.

Despite she was reluctant to admit it, she couldn’t deny how his tiny gestures gently stroked her heart, leaving it fluttering.

"Yes, you’re right..."

Smiling softly, Leslie inwardly decided to try something right now. She overturned her hand, inadvertently loosening their skin contact. Her eyes remained on the man sitting next to her, wanting to take in every one of his expressions.

’He looks rather aggrieved.’

Calix’s countenance changed slightly, looking as if he was suppressing disappointment. Seeing it tickled Leslie’s heart.

’Hehe, I wanna tease him.’

Leslie pretended to pull her hand away. Calix froze for a second. When she reacted by grasping his hand back to interlink their fingers together, his eyes widened momentarily before his gaze had a hint of mellowness.

Blinking, a voice whispered to her mind of her own realization.

’He likes me.’

This man...

’’To a certain degree... he likes me as a woman.’
