Chapter 249: What Happened to the Cheeky CEO Xu?
Tensed nerves made the night sleepless for both Calix and Leslie. Yet, their delightful anticipation masked their sluggishness as they were ready to leave for Frostwich Town the next morning.
It was the first day of June. As summer was finally ushered in, the temperature was warmer than usual. Fortunately, the summer rain period had yet to begin.
"Have a safe trip, Mr. Calix and Mrs. Leslie. We’ll be waiting for you two and the little miss."
"Please keep up updated about her. Don’t worry! You will surely bring her home!"
Amused by Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond’s way of encouraging them, Calix and Leslie laughed. They looked at the middle-aged spouses who stood outside the executive van.
"Please keep us in your prayers," Calix earnestly requested, his face beaming with joy, "We’re not sure how long we will be away. Just contact me if you have anything to tell us."
"We’ll go now, Aunt Wendy, Uncle... Raymond..." Leslie waved both hands at the older spouses. She shared the same joy as Calix, "Hopefully, we’ll return... with Calliope..."
Calix and Leslie informed Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond about Calliope on the previous Monday night. To say they were surprised was an understatement.
"Y-you two have a child?! And, she’s living in an orphanage?"
"Mr. Calix... were you involved romantically with Mrs. Leslie before? Is that why you two are so comfortable with each other from the start?"
Calix and Leslie decided to keep the incident of six years ago vague. They didn’t want to lie to Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond but, they still wanted to spare the details as well.
"We were in a short relationship. No one knew about us because we kept it secret."
"Yes, Calix’s right... We broke up because... we found ourselves incompatible... at that time..."
Fortunately, Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond no longer pressed on the issue. They simply congratulated Calix and Leslie for finding their child.
Still, the middle-aged man’s next words stunned them into embarrassment.
"Aiya! Isn’t this the case of love wins all? Ah, no! Love returns! Hahaha!"
While the grumbling Aunt Wendy smacked the laughing Uncle Raymond’s back, Calix and Leslie were still frozen. In the end, they shared a sheepish glance with one another.
Aside from Calix, Leslie and their entourage of bodyguards, some other people also followed.
Mrs. An and Mrs. Su both agreed to be Leslie’s private nurses during the trip. But, other caretakers would replace them once the stay went past its one-week mark.
Leslie and Calix approved of this arrangement. They were grateful enough for Mrs. An and Mrs. Su’s willingness to travel away from their families.
At the same time, Old Madam Xu sent a few helpers from the ancestral home to follow Calix. All three of them were experienced workers who had been working with the Xu family for a decade.
"Won’t you sleep ah? I can see your eyebags showing," teased Calix as the private jet ascended to the sky. They sat next to each other on the comfortable plush cushion seats.
Leslie made a face, purposely glaring at Calix, "Mr. Xu, don’t you know it’s... rude to say that to a lady?"
Blinking, Calix froze for a moment. Leslie noticed the fleeting surprise in his eyes. His next response rendered her speechless.
"Ah, that... sorry. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t joke like that ah."
"...huh?"
Question marks popped out of Leslie’s head as she stared at Calix in disbelief. The man suddenly fidgeted with the fabric of his slim-cut pants as his eyes randomly looked at everything but her.
What happened to the cheeky CEO Xu?
Why did he get so flustered like this?
Was this because of his nerves?
Despite still being in disbelief, Leslie let out helpless laughter. She extended a hand, poking one side of Calix’s face, earning his attention again.
"...yes, Leslie?"
Leslie blinked before bursting into giggles. The merriness of her laughter resonated in the room where only the two of them were present as the others were in the others.
"Hehe... don’t be so flustered ah... I’m not being mad... at you..."
With laughter still bubbling up from her mouth, Leslie playfully poked Calix’s cheek one more time before lowering her hand. The man was still staring at her sillily as if his whole being was frozen into a statue.
Leslie had nothing more to say to Calix. She smiled softly before patting the back of his right hand, barely covering how broad his hand was.
"I’m nervous... about telling Calliope... Aren’t you one too?"
Calix nodded stiffly, "...yes."
He was indeed nervous to be truthful to the little one but... he was flustered because of her ah!
"Now that we’re on the flight... I’m getting sleepy..." Leslie covered her mouth, fighting back the urge to yawn too loud, "I’ll shut my eyes... for a bit..."
"Okay... Ah, don’t you wanna lie on the bed?" suggested Calix, only thinking to let her be as comfortable as he could.
Leslie shook her head, answering while closing her eyes, "Nah, I’m fine... Here is good already..."
"Sleep ah. I’ll wake you up once we arrive."
"Hehe, okay..."
Calix grabbed a throw blanket from the drawer nearby. He ensured Leslie was comfortable on the couch before sitting quietly on his seat.
CEO Xu racked his brain, recalling the earlier moments. He didn’t expect his body was just conditioned to think he hurt Leslie’s feelings by saying something about her appearance.
’Calix, you’re stupid. Very stupid ah!’
Calix inwardly scolded himself for acting like that when Leslie was simply joking with him. She was aware the remark about her eyebags was his way of jesting with her as she returned the same gesture.
But...
He got flustered instead, not reacting with another banter like usual.
No wonder Leslie asked if it was due to his tensed nerves. Even Calix himself thought how unusual his behavior was.
’Stupid. I’m not a teen.’
Calix was baffled by himself. After realizing his growing feelings for Leslie, he didn’t know why he couldn’t act like a normal adult man.
And... there was another problem.
Lowering his eyes, Calix stared begrudgingly to his chest hidden under his clothes fabrics.
’Damn heart! Don’t beat too fast ah!’
