Chapter 209: The Past Grievances of a Chubby Munchkin

Like Old Madam Xu, the rest of them—except for Irene—were amazed to see Calix personally feed Leslie instead of using the caretaker’s service. Almost everyone had something to comment about it, some of them turned to praising the young man.

"I’m perfectly capable of taking care of my wife. None of you have to worry about anything ah."

Leslie chuckled as Calix smugly boasted about the topic. She knew that he was having fun trolling his parents and the rest.

How could he not? Everyone gaped at him as if he were an alien. He was just performing one of the basic duties of being a husband – assisting his wife when required.

"I was like that too when they visited last week," responded Old Madam Xu, enjoying the show that was unintentionally put on by them, "Aiya, Calix is more reliable than what I’ve always thought. He can take care of his wife well."

Old Madam Xu’s words earned laughter from everyone including the reserved Rowan and Bianca. Calix wiggled his brows, giving them his best smug look.

Then, a milky voice resonated in the dining room, coming from a space between Vernon and Lucille’s seats.

"Ehhh? Why Second Uncle feed Second Aunt? Second Aunt can’t eat by herself ah? She can’t hold the spoon and chopsticks?"

Vernon and Lucille flinched before they immediately looked down at Amelia. The little one’s eyes were brimming with interest as she kept staring directly at Calix and Leslie.

"Mia, don’t say that," flustered, Lucille gently tapped her daughter’s little mouth, "Apologize to Second Aunt."

Vernon ran a palm over Amelia’s head, stating, "Mia, have you forgotten what Daddy and Mommy have taught you before? About not pointing out loud at sick people?"

Vernon and Lucille didn’t want to excuse Amelia’s behavior even though she didn’t say anything offensive. They wanted to instill good values in their daughter from a young age.

If Amelia threw tantrums and was rude, the spouses would bring her away from the table to discipline her. Then, she was expected to apologize to the affected people.

"Ah... Mia can’t?" asked the little turnip head, her voice wavering.

Amelia blinked, never expecting to receive a slight reprimand from her parents. She shifted her eyes from Calix and Leslie, moving to Vernon and Lucille.

Leslie opened her mouth to say something. Amelia’s saddened look caught her pity. But, she immediately dropped her intention.

Vernon and Lucille were parenting their daughter. No one should interfere, not even the elders.

Amelia wasn’t really misbehaving. The little one was quite well-mannered for a child her age. She simply voiced out her curiosity.

Leslie moved her gaze from Amelia, landing her eyes on Calix’s side profile. He was staring at the little one with a concerned look but, he also knew better not to intervene.

"Now, do you understand, Mia?"

Lucille’s gentle tone and soft pat on her back eased Amelia’s taut countenance. She was aware that her parents were not harshly scolding her.

Understanding what she had done wrong, Amelia put her hands together on her lap and looked directly at Leslie. Her eyes were glazed with unshed tears but, the little one didn’t cry.

"Mia is sorry, Second Aunt. Mia shouldn’t speak like that."

Leslie’s lips curled into a helpless smile, thinking how adorable and well-behaved Amelia was. Vernon and Lucille had been raising their little princess well.

"Second Aunt accepts Mia’s apology... Your second uncle feeds me... because I can’t eat by... myself yet... My hands are weak..."

Without dismissing the topic, Leslie explained her condition to Amelia. She wanted to clear the little one’s curiosity herself while forming a bond with the child.

Amelia blinked, her mouth forming a round shape. She was aware that Leslie was sick after seeing her appearing in a wheelchair but, her mind didn’t really make the connection.

"Oh... Will Second Aunt get better soon?"

Leslie’s smile softened, followed by the glow in her eyes, "Will Mia play with... Second Aunt once I get... better?"

"Will! Mia will!" answering enthusiastically, Amelia bobbed her head up and down, nodding like a chicken pecking grain, "Let’s play together, Second Aunt! Playing with Second Uncle is no fun. He always makes fun of Mia."

Recalling her past grievances, Amelia glared at Calix while puffing up her cheeks. She remembered almost everything about how her second uncle had always teased her.

"What? Don’t look at me like that ah," Calix squinted his eyes, pretending to scowl back at Amelia, "Go play with your friends ah. Don’t take my wife."

Tsk tsk tsk, this chubby muchkin. She barely reached his thighs yet she dared to fight him?!

"Second Aunt wanna play with Mia," Amelia reiterated what Leslie had just asked her, "We will play together and leave Second Uncle alone."

Huffing, Amelia ignored Calix’s frown. The change in the little one’s antics entertained the ones who witnessed it, earning laughter from everyone.

Calix openly rolled his eyes, thinking how annoying this little turnip head could be. Ignoring Amelia, he spoke to Leslie.

"Here, continue eating ah. Don’t pay attention to her."

Amused, Leslie replied while shaking her head, "You act like a child ah... Mia is decades younger... than you..."

"..."

Leslie’s candid response shut Calix down.

Harper and Vernon laughed louder while Old Madam Xu and Lucille covered their mouths, their shoulders shaking. Rowan, Bianca and Irene pressed their lips together, unsure whether to laugh at Calix or not.

"Hahaha, come, have more of those dishes," Old Madam Xu clapped her hands once, pulling everyone’s attention back, "Mr. and Mrs. Li, eat. Irene, you too. We still have desserts next."

"Oh... we will, Old Madam," Rowan smiled awkwardly, reaching out for one of the dishes, "The food is delicious. The chefs have done a good job."

"Thank you for your hospitality, Old Madam," Bianca followed after her husband, smiling at Old Madam Xu, "We’ll surely eat a lot."

Rowan and Bianca still felt awkward around the Xu family but, they loosened up more than before. The Xu family didn’t make them feel unwelcomed, much to their appreciation.

And...

Rowan and Bianca subtly shifted their eyes to Leslie and Calix.

The young man continued feeding their eldest daughter while exchanging playful whispers. His actions showed how well-accustomed he was to the act.

Even though Calix abruptly appeared in front of them and requested to marry Charlene, seeing how close and comfortable they were with each other eased Rowan and Bianca’s worries.

He did all the things they had failed their eldest daughter all this time.
