Chapter 207: The Spouses’ Self-Reflection
Leslie shifted her eyes from Rowan, unable to keep looking at him. With Calix still standing behind her wheelchair, she cast her gaze on everyone in the drawing room.
"Good evening... It’s my pleasure to meet... all of you tonight... Thank you for being... here..."
Leslie unconsciously tightened her hands, thinking how stiff she sounded just now. But, her slightly frozen mind couldn’t think of another way to start her greeting.
Old Madam Xu smiled fondly at Leslie, her wrinkles softening. She sensed how nervous her second granddaughter-in-law was.
For some reason, Old Madam Xu had a hunch that Leslie’s anxiousness was attributed to meeting her parents.
This would be their first time seeing each other after more than four months – three of Leslie’s comatose period and more than one month of her being awake.
"My dear Charlene, come here," Old Madam Xu raised one hand, gesturing at Leslie to come closer, "Calix, help your wife. Sit next to me."
"Oh, okay," Calix nodded as he quickly bid to his grandmother’s words.
Old Madam Xu purposely addressed Leslie as Charlene. She still remembered what Calix had told her a few days ago.
"Grandma, call my wife Charlene during the family meeting, okay? We’re the only ones who call her Leslie for now."
Calix didn’t elaborate more nor did Old Madam Xu ask for the reason. She was already aware of the strained relationship between Leslie and her parents.
Trying not to overcomplicate unnecessary matters, Old Madam Xu simply agreed with Calix.
As Calix pushed Leslie’s wheelchair toward Old Madam Xu, Andrian moved away from his seat next to his mother. He intended to let his new daughter-in-law sit there.
Rowan, Bianca, Irene, Vernon and Lucille said nothing while keeping their eyes on the newlyweds. Amelia also openly stared at Leslie, wondering about her second uncle’s wife.
Wow~ Was that really her new aunt?
She was so pretty ah! Did Second Uncle deserve such a beautiful fairy?
Yay! She got herself a new friend! \(^w^)/
"Careful."
Calix helped Leslie to sit by Old Madam Xu’s side. The old lady reached out for one of her granddaughter-in-law’s arms, feeling how thin she was under the fabric of her dress.
"You look better than last week, Charlene," Old Madam Xu’s eyes glimmered with fondness, expressing her joy in meeting Leslie again, "But, don’t forget to eat more ah. You’re still skinny."
Leslie nodded shyly at Old Madam Xu, feeling the warmth of gratitude flooding in her heart. She could tell that the old lady was trying to ease the pressure of the situation.
"I’m alright, Grandma..."
Rowan and Bianca exchanged a look before gazing at their eldest daughter. Uneasiness flooded into their hearts but, they knew it was not anyone else’s fault but theirs.
The spouses learned that Charlene had already met Old Madam Xu through Calix. Their son-in-law brought the matter up during his private meeting with Rowan.
Irene shifted her eyes from Old Madam Xu and Leslie, glancing at Rowan and Bianca. She could tell how uncomfortable her parents were but, she kept her opinions to herself.
’This is so awkward. But, I don’t want to force Big Sister to talk to Mom and Dad.’
Irene had already confessed the truth to Rowan and Bianca. She told them about her meeting the conscious Leslie during her first visit to Graceville Manor.
"I met Big Sister on that day. I’m sorry for not telling you but, I couldn’t do it. Shouldn’t we prioritize her getting better after the traumatic incident?"
Rowan and Bianca were terribly distraught. They had never expected this at all yet, they understood why Irene and Calix kept the news from them.
Their eldest daughter had regained consciousness more than a month ago!
But...
The both of them—as her parents—were the last to know.
Calix and Old Madam Xu’s presence helped Leslie to feel better after appearing in front of Rowan and Bianca. She addressed her parents with a nod.
"Mother and Father... we haven’t seen each other... for so long... Irene had told me about... the move..."
Leslie felt awkward addressing Rowan and Bianca as such but, this was something she needed to get used to. Thankfully, she wouldn’t need to live under the same roof as the spouses.
Rowan and Bianca exchanged another subtle look, sharing the same thoughts. They wanted to approach their eldest daughter closer but, they didn’t dare to do so.
Even though Charlene acknowledged their presence, they perceived how uncomfortable she actually was. Not wanting to push their luck, they reluctantly stayed in their seats instead of going to their daughter.
"Charlene, we’re glad to see you’re better now," Bianca smiled, trying to conceal her sadness from her countenance, "You’ll fully recover soon. But, please don’t overexert yourself."
After learning that Sarah was the culprit behind Charlene’s staircase accident, Bianca had been self-reflecting a lot. She scoured her memories, recalling how she had been mistreating her eldest daughter all this time.
Bianca reminded Rowan that they had disappointed Charlene enough. If her husband wanted to continue with his way—blindly pleasing his mother and younger brother—then she would pack up her bags and leave.
"Y-your mother is right, Charlene. Don’t force yourself if it’s too painful. Take your time to recover."
Disconcerted, Rowan almost stuttered in the beginning. He coerced himself to look at his eldest daughter despite dreading her lukewarm response.
After receiving a stern talking-to from Bianca, Rowan acknowledged how ashamed he was for not defending Charlene all this time. He was a coward – disregarding the family he built with his wife to appease his mother and brother.
"Mother and Father, I’ll... do that... The doctors and therapists who Calix found... for me are excellent..."
Leslie inwardly exhaled a sigh out of relief. She was thankful to Rowan and Bianca for not pushing or acting so close to her. If they did that, she wouldn’t know how to react.
Perhaps, Rowan and Bianca learned not to push their luck. Irene had been telling Leslie how their parents deeply regretted what happened between her and Sarah.
Leslie was unsure whether she could build a decent relationship with the spouses or not. After all, Rowan and Bianca were her parents in this world.
She was Leslie Song and Charlene Li at the same time. Two identities in one body.
