Chapter 184: People Liked Him But, He Hated Them
The small party started at seven in the backyard. Aside from Calix, Leslie, Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond, Mrs. An also joined them. She was on duty tonight.
Mrs. Su clocked out before the celebration started but, Aunt Wendy sent her off with several food boxes. The former happily thanked the housekeeper for the dishes.
The group of five had fun dining at the pavilion built on the wooden deck. Uncle Raymond entertained them by singing old songs. He grabbed Aunt Wendy’s hand, inviting his wife to sing along.
Good food and good people played roles in having a great party. They exchanged stories and laughter while enjoying the delicious dishes.
The echoes of the merry sounds harmonized with the gentle lapping of the water and the leaves rustling.
Eventually, the party came to an end around ten.
"Calix, thank you. I enjoyed... the party so much."
Leslie thanked Calix once again before drifting to sleep, mellowing the smile on his lips. He watched her droopy eyes slowly close while putting a blanket on her.
"I’m glad to hear that, Leslie. Good night."
"Good night..." whispered Leslie, barely audible to Calix.
Leslie’s happiness was perfectly captured on her countenance, swelling Calix’s heart with pride and joy for giving her such a simple yet memorable moment.
No matter what happened in the future, he never wanted it to change.
Soon, a brand new week began on Monday.
Calix was preoccupied with more pressing matters related to the company. He needed to solve them before his business trip started this Tuesday, the very next day.
Sigh... What a way to start a week.
After dinner that night, Calix planned to bring Leslie out for a night drive. He wanted to compensate for the days he would be away starting tomorrow.
But, she swiftly turned his suggestion down.
"Don’t you need to head out... early tomorrow, Calix?" asked Leslie as she stared at Calix’s puzzled look. They were still in the dining room, "How about calling it... the night earlier than usual?"
Leslie learned that Rocester City was two hours away by flight from Silvercrest City. It was another metropolis of this huge country. Heading there was time consuming.
Calix let out a helpless chuckle, immediately understanding what Leslie meant by that. He was already accustomed to the way of her thinking.
"I’m not that sleepy yet," rising to his feet, Calix placed one hand on the back of Leslie’s wheelchair, "I think a jigsaw puzzle game can kill our time. What do you say?"
"Hehe, that sounds good..."
Leaving the dining room, Calix pushed Leslie to return to the second floor. He planned to bring her to the lounge there instead of the one they usually used. Various board games were kept there.
Calix had several jigsaw puzzles for children. He bought them with Amelia in mind because his niece used to come here to play.
Leslie could easily handle the big-sized yet light puzzle pieces. Calix had invited her to play the game twice before. She showed joy when solving the puzzles despite her movements still being slow and clumsy.
Calix put Leslie on the carpeted floor, letting her sit opposite the coffee table. He grabbed the children’s jigsaw puzzle boxes before asking her to choose.
"The one with the... Fairy Queen," Leslie grinned, finding the illustration of the Fairy Queen and her flower garden pretty.
"Okay," chuckling, Calix scattered the thirty puzzle pieces on the table, "Do your best, Mrs. Xu."
Taking a spot next to Leslie, Calix watched her fiddling with the pieces. Her right hand moved slowly as she wondered which one should she pick.
"Tomorrow... where will you stay?" asked Leslie without looking up from the puzzle, "Does your assistant... Edward follow you?"
Leslie didn’t know much about Calix’s business trip this time but, she was interested to hear more from him. She couldn’t help but recall the time they spent in Rome more than a month ago.
"Edward will stay behind. He has arranged my accommodations," Calix shared the name of the hotel while watching Leslie choose the puzzle pieces, "Well, I wonder if we can do video calls."
"...huh?" Leslie shifted her eyes from the puzzles, looking at Calix, "Do you wanna... do it? Video calling?"
"Yeah," Calix nodded once, expressing his intention. He flashed the brightest grin to Leslie, "Aren’t you touched, Leslie? Your husband is busy with work but, he still thinks about you ah."
"What the..." Leslie scoffed, pretending to glare at Calix for sounding so conceited, "I think Mr. Xu should be... honest ah. Just say... that you’re eager to share... any new gossip with me..."
Calix had a tendency to gossip whenever he could. Leslie was used to hearing him ranting about this one person to the next after work. Most of them were people who annoyed him for making silly mistakes.
"You know me very well, Mrs. Xu," Calix winked, acting as if he received a compliment from Leslie, "I’ll try to video call you at night before bedtime."
"Up to you..." Leslie rolled her eyes, "Won’t you get busy... at night too? I think... people want you to... socialize with them..."
CEO Xu was a respectable figure in the business field. Leslie doubted Calix wouldn’t receive any invitation to night gatherings during the short time he was in Rocester City.
"People like me but," Calix grimaced, "I hate them. They drain my energy."
Blinking, laughter slipped out of Leslie’s mouth. She shook her head in helplessness, finding the truth in Calix’s words.
"Make sure to recharge... your social battery every... night..." chuckling, Leslie was still amused by Calix’s remark. She glanced at him, "You meet many people... every day, CEO Xu..."
"Haa..." Calix threw his body on the floor, straightening his legs under the coffee table, "Why can’t we just be cats? They only need to eat, sleep and taking a dump. People love cats even when they’re being grumpy."
Leslie sighed, wondering how CEO Xu came up with that thought.
