Chapter 133: Would She Ever Return Here with Him?

Riding the pastel pink scooter, Calix brought Leslie riding through the narrow cobblestone streets. The passing breeze fluttered the hem of their clothes and coolly kissed the tip of their noses.

"Wow~ Hahaha!"

Amazed by the second surprise from CEO Xu—riding a scooter at night—Leslie laughed in glee. She couldn’t stop looking around her as Calix continued zipping through the ancient streets.

Seeing the Eternal City from the huge open-top bus and a small scooter gave Leslie different views. Nonetheless, she appreciated both experiences.

They had just left the scooter rental shop. Calix told Leslie that their first destination was the Colosseum, followed by other places. They wouldn’t stop for a long time at each spot saved for the last one.

"Are you that happy?" shouted Calix from the front, infected by Leslie’s cheery laughter. He slowed down the speed, allowing him to sound clearer against the wind.

"Hehehe! Yes!" yelled Leslie, waving both arms in the air, "Mr. Xu! You’re the best!"

Calix’s smile had a hint of helplessness. He skillfully maneuvered the scooter on the streets, avoiding clashing with others.

Calix glanced at the side mirror of the scooter. Unfortunately, Leslie was not reflected in the glass, preventing him from seeing her lips break into a huge grin and laughing nonstop.

"We’ll arrive soon!" announced Calix, "Look! Can you see that?"

Intrigued by Calix’s exclaims, Leslie craned her neck, looking further ahead. The gigantic building of the Colosseum stood imposingly before them, its majestic silhouette shone against the night sky.

"I’ll slow the speed," Calix spoke loudly as they approached the ancient amphitheater, "Let’s stop somewhere nice."

"Okay!"

Leslie continued looking at the ancient ruins. Rich history was embedded into the historical building, telling its story to the people of the new generations even after thousands of years.

Calix pulled up at one spot away from other visitors. They continued sitting on the scooter, appreciating the Colosseum from afar.

"How is it? Spot any of your friends?" Calix asked teasingly.

Leslie side-eyed Calix, fully understanding what he meant by that. Her glare expelled laughter out of his mouth.

After the Colosseum, Calix brought Leslie to the Trevi fountain. Tens to hundreds of visitors were loitering around, most of them were couples. They were awestruck by how magical the fountain looked under the moonlight.

"Wanna toss a coin?" Calix brought up a few coins from his suit pocket, "I heard if we throw one coin, we’ll return to Rome someday."

"That sounds fun," Leslie happily agreed before her expression sank, "But... what if people see a coin floating in the air?"

Everyone was busy with their own things thus, none of them paid attention to Calix who spoke by himself. But, Leslie was still hesitant about tossing the coin herself.

"It’s fine," Calix’s lips melted into a smile, his serene gaze fell on Leslie’s worried one, "Come, stand close to me here. Do you see how people throw the coins?"

Leslie nodded. She glanced at the people surrounding the fountain. Standing with their back facing the fountain, they used their right hands to toss the coins over their left shoulders.

"Here," Calix secured a spot for them near the fountain, "Come closer."

"...okay."

Leslie stepped a few steps closer to Calix. Her right shoulder grazed against his left arm. Sensing the warmth emanated from the touch, she felt heat spreading in her cheeks.

"Take this coin and toss it."

Leslie nodded again. Pursing her lips tight, she silently prayed that none of the people would notice the coin hovering in the air.

Taking the coin from Calix’s palm, Leslie swiftly did as she was told. He also did the same. They heard the plopping sound of the coins landing on the water before submerging to the base of the fountain.

"Hehe, we have to make sure we’ll return to Rome again in the future," Calix covered his mouth, laughing in glee, "But, you need to get into your body back first."

Leslie siffened for a moment. Blinking, she smiled awkwardly, "...yeah."

Wasn’t that a wonderful dream?

But, would she ever return here with him?

For some reason, the promise sounded bleak to her.

"Let’s go to the Spanish Steps," Calix gestured in a direction, he didn’t notice the slight change in Leslie’s expression, "It’s a walking distance from here."

"Oh! Yes, yes."

Calix and Leslie climbed the long staircase, occasionally avoiding bumping into other people. A few groups sat on the stairs, relaxing under the night sky while chatting. A few enjoyed eating street food while staring out over the glimmering city below.

"Oh~ We can watch the city better from here," exclaimed Leslie in delight as she threw her gaze downward, "It’s nice if we can have some gelato while sitting here."

"Hehe, if only," Calix grinned, teasing Leslie, "If you do, I bet there’ll be headlines in local newspapers tomorrow. People will think some ancient ghost enjoyed gelato."

"Tsk," Leslie glared at Calix, holding back from smacking his arm, "Who are you calling a ghost?"

Calix burst out laughing. Shaking his head, he continued ascending the stairs. Leslie broke into a helpless smile.

The husband and wife didn’t climb to the top. After spending some time watching the city from above, they returned to the scooter.

"Let’s head to Trastevere," said Calix while latching his helmet chin strap, "That’s our last destination before heading back. We’ll drop by the cafes and bars there if you want."

"Alright," Leslie simply followed Calix’s arrangement.

Trastevere was brimming with locals and tourists eager to enjoy its charming nightlife. Once again Leslie was awestruck by the medieval-ages buildings clad in ivy, standing proudly against time at the quaint cobblestone streets.

"Let’s go and look around. We can get some food too," said Calix after parking the scooter, "Do you want some pizza? Or, anything else?"

"...how can I eat?" Leslie replied, sounding a bit disappointed, "Well, if it’s takeout, I can have it once we get back."

Calix smiled in helplessness. He gestured to Leslie as he walked in a direction, "Follow me."

Calix and Leslie took a stroll to the nearby areas, watching the lively nightlife of Trastevere. People filled the outdoor seating areas of the casual dining eateries, relishing in the wood-fired pizza, pasta and local wines.

Then, Calix led Leslie to head to the Tiber River, watching the moonlight glimmering on the gentle lapping of the water. Other visitors also strolled on the cobblestone streets by the river.

At the end of their exploration, Calix got two boxes of pizza at one of the local pizza parlors. Then, he and Leslie returned to the scooter.

"Are you sure you don’t want anything else? How about some desserts?" asked Calix without looking at Leslie. He sensed her sitting on the seat behind him.

"I’m still full," Leslie made up excuses, "You bought pizza already. It’s enough ah."

"Hurm... okay. We better return now."

Leslie’s lips curled into a smile, nodding. She let her eyes wander to the bustling and ancient neighborhood as they slowly left it behind.

Even though they didn’t stay long in the places they visited tonight, Leslie was grateful enough for Calix’s surprises. She appreciated every single moment of it.

’When we return home, I’ll surely miss the days we were here.’

Smiling to herself, Leslie quietly watched the shimmering lights casting upon the earthy tones, historical buildings around.

The moonlight gently glowed behind their backs as they continued zipping through the narrow cobblestone streets.
