Chapter 113: Meeting Her Goddess
Chapter 113: Meeting Her Goddess
Talk about marriage ended soon, much to Calix and Leslie’s delight. They finally reached a decision at the end of their dinner.
Both families, especially on the groom’s side wanted to wait until the bride recovered properly before bringing it up again.
"The date, the venue and the preparations needed, we’ll ask Charlene for her opinions too. Let’s talk about this subject again later."
Old Madam Xu’s statement was met with everyone’s approval, except for one – Old Madam Li. The latter bit her lower lip, obviously dissatisfied.
The Li family’s matriarch wanted to hear a more definite answer but, Bianca surprisingly shut her off.
"Mother, Charlene is still unconscious. Shouldn’t we pray for her recovery first instead of thinking of the wedding?"
The old lady begrudgingly bid to her eldest daughter-in-law’s words.
"We should have some tea and desserts in the drawing room," said Andrian after everyone finished their dinner. He waved a hand, signaling to the helpers about it, "Let’s go. We can talk more comfortably there."
"That’s a good idea," Harper chimed in, agreeing with her husband. She looked at Bianca and Rowan, her face beaming, "I want to know more about my daughter-in-law. May I ask you? About her favorites?"
Even though Charlene might not wake up anytime soon, Harper wanted to prepare her knowledge about her second daughter-in-law. She wanted to know what the young lady’s favorite things to do as well as her aspirations no matter how big or small they were.
Harper was never one to push her daughters-in-law to be very ambitious.
If Lucille and Charlene had greater things to achieve, she would surely support them. The same thing happened even if the ladies were simply content with their lives.
Everyone’s definition of success and happiness was different.
"Oh... yes, we can talk about it," replied Bianca hesitantly.
"Good!" chirped Harper happily, "Hehe, my first daughter-in-law loves sewing and making clothes in her spare time. I wonder if Charlene has any similar hobbies. It’ll be fine if her hobbies are in different areas too. I just want to learn about her."
The cheery Harper didn’t realize how Rowan and Bianca stiffened following her last remarks. Irene lowered her head before throwing a glance at Calix. He held back from grinning too much.
All four of them, including the invisible Leslie understood how little Rowan and Bianca knew about their eldest daughter.
Thus, everyone made their way to one of the drawing rooms. The helpers served tea and desserts before leaving the two families to continue chatting.
Calix accompanied his parents and parents-in-law while Evelyn and Amelia entertained the starstruck Irene. Vernon and Lucille only chimed in when necessary. The elderly old madams also joined their conversation.
"Library is a quiet place, like a sanctuary! Maybe that’s why Charlene chose to work there. If she loves reading, that’s another reason."
"...seems so. She tends to keep to herself... rather than telling us."
As expected, Rowan and Bianca were quite clueless about their eldest daughter’s hobbies and personal life. Everyone in the Xu family caught up on that yet, none of them pointed that out.
Harper and Andrian skillfully changed the subject. They didn’t want to humiliate Rowan and Bianca despite feeling a little off about their lack of knowledge regarding their own daughter.
Seeing that his parents’ mood changed a little, Calix silently moved to where Evelyn, Irene and Amelia were.
Leslie sat with them instead of together with her parents. She seemed to be amused by whatever Evelyn was telling Irene and Amelia. Calix caught the bits of their conversation.
"Ohhh! I love both pairs in Bunny and the Moon[1]. The Sky God and Atlas are romantic ah! Hehe, I love it when they chase after the Moon Goddess and Tuzi. Sister Eve, you’re the perfect choice for the Moon Goddess role!"
Irene happily exclaimed about one of Evelyn’s latest dramas. It was adapted from one of the former’s favorite NovelFire. The romantic comedy between the divine beings enchanted its fans.
"I’m happy to hear that. Hehe, who knows I have another cute little fan like you," Evelyn happily entertained the enthusiastic Irene. Her image as the Ice Goddess Xu changed to a spring one, "Weren’t you happy when you know the actors for Atlas and Tuzi’s roles dated in real life?"
"Of course! Yes, yes!" Irene touched her face, throwing her dreamy gaze to the garden outside the open sliding doors, "We the fans celebrate it. No wonder their chemistry is so good. Ah! Sister Eve, your chemistry with Sky God is good too!"
Evelyn laughed out loud when Irene suddenly added the last remark. Her heart was tickled by this young teen’s adorableness.
Calix shook his head in helplessness. He should have guessed that Irene might be another fan of Evelyn.
"Don’t you want to take a photo together? How about an autograph?" asked Calix once he slumped down on the couch, sitting next to Leslie, "Irene, you’re lucky ah. If you come any later, this Ice Goddess Xu will fly off to other places."
Evelyn shot a glare at her annoying brother before focusing on Irene again. Amelia moved from them, climbing to where Calix sat. He put the little turnip head on his lap.
"Wanna take photos?" winking, Evelyn presented the irresistible offer to Irene, "I’ll give you an autograph later."
"Y-yes!"
Irene took out her phone, hands shaking out of excitement. Evelyn scooted closer to the high school girl and placed one hand behind her shoulders. They smilingly looked at the phone camera lens.
"Sister Eve! You’re indeed a beauty! Thank you!" Irene was on the verge of tears. She didn’t expect to get photos with her beloved actress.
Evelyn chuckled and kept thinking how sweet Irene was, "I permit you to share our selfies with your friends. Or, with your social media."
Evelyn didn’t think much about it. She had bumped into her fans countless times before. Like every other celebrity, everyone was eager to share their encounters.
"T-thank you! Thank you again!"
Calix shook his head again, wondering how tonight turned out to be a private meeting between Irene and her favorite actress. He heard chuckles coming from Leslie next to him.
"Sigh... my sister-in-law is more lovable than my own. Is this luck or blessing?" lamented Calix.
Evelyn narrowed her gaze, holding back the urge to kick this irritating brother of hers. She shouldn’t show her unruly side to Irene, at least not yet.
"Brother-in-law, you’re luckier ah," Irene giggled, her whole countenance beaming in joy, "You have Ice Goddess Xu as your sister. Ah! I didn’t mean I don’t like my own sister ah."
"Hahaha..." Calix pretended to laugh hollowly, "Lucky? Yeah, right."
Evelyn pursed her lips tight, still glowering at her second brother. None of them aside from Calix could hear someone laughing at Irene’s clumsy blunder.
Leslie was actually glad to see the high school girl regain her liveliness after what happened last week.
Irene was still too young to be burdened by their parents’ inadequacies. She was at the peak of her youth before blossoming into a maiden. A teenager like her should relish making friends at school.
Leslie and Charlene had no privilege to enjoy their youth.
